The photorealism of modern games can only go so far, the biggest disadvantage being that increasingly pretty graphics require increasingly much money and time to produce.
Once the current AAA industry goes tits up because people smarten up for a change and stop buying DLC-infected garbage, we'll probably see a decrease in graphical quality - not so much because of the current retro/pixel trend, but because the smaller studios which survive the purge simply can't afford to produce anything better.

The only exception to all of the above will be North Korea where, after playing through Thief, FEAR, AoE and other classics, Kim will develop a growing obsession with videogames. As a result, North Korean games feature awesome gameplay and writing, but all star a fat korean communist as a protagonist.

I'd gladly plays games that look HL2 or Dark Messiah for example but have amazing physics, mechanics, AI, worlds etc. A pretty game is neat, for five minutes but then you want the game to actually deliver. Graphics might be the thing I place last in a ranking list of video game pieces. Art style is even more important than graphics.
The sad truth though is that gaming has stagnated and in some places regressed across the board, not just graphics. AI is still braindead and simplified, mechanics are still hand holding and easy, physics are still just lolsowhacky ragdoll for the most part, worlds are nice but lack creativity and variety. We're seeing very few innovations if any in gaming and it sucks. Games should be better year after year as the hardware improves and allows for more potential, no medium has that potential to grow like vidya does. Yet it doesn't grow but just festers in mediocrity.

Whoever posted that reply has no fucking idea what they are talking about and the faces in HZA are shit because the developers working on that game are shit, and lazy and were more interested in creating a game that looked good in postcards rather than making anything of any real value because they want to sell games. This is true starting with fucking Killzone which I brought entirely off of the advertisting and the graphics and the game was so shit I gave up right at the end and threw the game in the trash, the first game I had ever put in the trash.
Here's a picture of Venom Snake, he has a nicely detailed and hand sculpted face, his face has a lot of character from wrinkles and scars and the high resolution textures show this intricate detail, the scene is lit well and definitely purposely to account for the cutscene, the lighting model is physically based just like the one in HZD, the game itself however runs at 60fps and has actual reflections.

I prefer function over form in graphics. Graphics should show what they need to in the clearest possible way and they should not hinder performance while doing so. Realistic looking games and high-quality textures get in the way of both gameplay and performance. When everything is highly detailed it becomes difficult to spot important objects (enemies and items blend in with the background) and FPS drops.
Ultimately that means that the "cartoon" style graphics aping TF2 are the best choice for most games

At the time Crysis was made single and dual cores for your CPU was the standard. Most games from that time also rely mostly on one or two cores of your CPU even if it's multi-core, excluding updated version or public versions released. It ran pretty well on low settings but people bought it specifically to stress test on high settings, especially when you could dick around with the map and spawn large amounts of items in it which could bring your PC to it's knees.
Most problems people have with it is that the standards and direction for CPUs have changed, modern GPUs typically don't have a problem with it. If you point to KCD as an example of me being wrong the problems with comp[atibility with some cards is the fault of Vavra's dev team since Crysis doesn't have those problems.

MGSV does indeed have great face models. Games with better facial animations and models can be counted by one hand, which is a shame really. The only thing KJP fucked up when it comes to the characters in MGSV was the hair. They look pixelated and shitty, especially from a distance. This is a trend with new vidya and I cannot understand why. It doesn't look good, so why use it? Even MGS3 had better hair than this.

Hair looks like this because of the limitations of game engines to draw transparent objects. When I was still in game engine land, hair was made to look nice with an alpha channel that was able to do gradients, so … not mask that would switch between on and off, but one that allowed for a softened more aliased result, if that makes sense. The issue with this is that in older game engines you couldn't stack two of these semi transparent gradients on top of each other - the engine just didn't know how to handle it, so you would either get a situation where the alphas would multiply and it would freak out completely, or the engine would be designed to simply stop drawing the second object.
What happened around 2007-2008 is that developers started using more semi transparent things that required a full alpha channels instead of a mask. You can have overlapping alpha masks that only switch between 'on' and 'off' with no gradiation allowed but that produces a rough, aliased result (almost exactly like what you are seeing in the MGS characters hair), but it means you can have hair on the characters that will be visible through, say, a dirtied glass panel.
I've included a few screenshots of what I mean - I can't find an image of the specific glass issue but what's being shown is symptomatic of the issue I'm talking about. It can be solved programmatically at a great expense in terms of performance, or you can make all your hair have a slightly higher resolution alpha mask instead.
Also if anyone actually knows the proper language for this shit and can correct me where my knowledge has dropped, feel free. I haven't worked in games for 6 years.

Well, yes and no. I'm not a programmer but I understand that basically there were tradeoffs with different alpha blending techniques, and you would essentially always have some issue until some autistic savant comes up with a new blending operation that would have better tradeoffs. This particular technique basically trades off shader complexity (which was traditionally quite taxing on a graphics card) for having to pump a really large texture into the hair alpha to offset the negatives (in this case an aliased look). Looking at your screenshot I suspect Crysis is using this exact same technique but perhaps with a hair texture 4x the resolution, so the weird aliasing happens on a much smaller scale… Then again maybe they aren't - I could just be reading bad texture filtering. On top of this they have much nicer, art directed hair than MGS did which something that …. requires some knowledge on the part of the leadership, and a lot of time from the individual artist to get working in game.
To illustrate my point, I looked up some recent games hair and it seems that the tomb raider devs were relying on TressFX to do the heavy lifting as the screenshots with that enabled look much better. I'm unsure if they are using proper alpha as it may be a solved issue for some studios - they're definitely not using the same techniques though.
Actually after I wrote all that I found this image of triss in the witcher; so either the witcher is doing some hyper weird texture filtering that's making the hair colour bleed out all over everything, or the artist just fucked up the map and they ARE using a softer texture, and the aliasing is just a genuine render issue that could be solved by turning it up in the settings. Looking at Geralt I would have guessed they were doing much smaller polygon ribbons so they could sim the hair and have it flow around in the wind or some shit. Honestly, I would be surprised if this was not a solved issue today, but I would also not be surprised if these fixes were too expensive for a game that was trying to hit 30fps on the original xbone.

This one will be a little longer. I will cut my predictions into two.
Graphics
The graphics won't change that much. As unpopular I might get with some of the rapefugess molesting us here, I should break into much harder words than the pixel pusher; Computer graphics in itself is a insanely complex topic. Even the mathematics behind something mundane as positioning and moving around shit is torment. The issue he is talking about is I think connected to such operations plus operations affecting the pixel or entire textures that also have to get computed. This leads me to what Anon called "costs". By that he means computation time and memory, which are both scarce, because consoles and Computers are at the end of the day still discrete, i.e. The amount of shit/numbers they can store ends some time. 10 years ago, this wasn't that big of a deal in theory, because the power of computers still doubled in memory and the number of cores. Nowadays it is, because nobody is willing to spend 700 - 1500 benis on a graphics card that first has so much power that it doesn't make sense, because almost no application, let alone game, takes advantage of that power and second can only solve a handful of problems normalfags don't give a shit about like say, animating cloth. The next thing is that all companies that used to push the envelope with graphics are either effectively defunct, really defunct or in the hands of a company that is more interested in jewing people than delivering a good product. A example of the last is Epic Games with its Unreal Engine, which 3rd iteration was the De-facto standard between 2008 and 2015 (don't take that at face value). Both have been effectively taken over by Tencent. This wouldn't be that big of a deal, if it weren't for the way Computer Scientists and programmers are trained nowadays. Its bad enough that programming isn't a profession of pioneers anymore, its even worse when all programmers to-be are seriously get taught, that raw computing power is much cheaper than their work time and therefor they shouldn't optimize so much while the same problems that plagued gaming during on home computers and all consoles until the mid 90s are going to make a huge come back. I should also mention, that virtually everyone trained in Western Academia is trained to become a arrogant hack. Last time I gave a CS degree a shot and failed, SAP has rejected MS graduates from the next University, because they are too "overly intellectual". With nobody willing to shell out more and more worthless money for powerful hardware and consoles still being as weak sauce as they are now in comparison to a real PC, game programmers get confronted with limitations they have to work around. There is a good reason why cartoon graphics came trendy and nothing looks as good a Crysis 3. In fact Croberts betting on Cryengine (or a variant of it by Amazon to be more precise) is the reason why Shekel Citizen is such a trash fire. It is specialized for FPS and the line up shows that, but I digress. The issue at hand is the lack of ready made graphic engines that can work with the new limitations and the need to rice the living crap out of the code to make it fit into a toaster since most people have either a console or a toaster. I think the flood of shit FPS, remasters and open world games is a result of a home made software crisis. Good and innovative games that this place will remember fondly will still be rare and they won't come from the AAA scene that needs to make all the money, because they have invested too much money. That won't be over in the foreseeable future. I hope you like Japanese games, because these are seem to be the only ones that stay in budget (and it shows). The good news is, that the typical Indiegame as we knew from ante-gamergate is a dying breed. One of the last of its kind, Delver, came out of early access last year. A casual look at the upcoming releases on Steam, GoG and other shop reveal that the hipster pixel garbage of yesteryear is almost gone. This one of the few things that can be blamed on gamergate, that sadly for the all the indiehipsters fell at the same time Steam introduced refunds. At the same time, the number of games available has quadrupled leading to a situation in which low effort garbage is competing itself to death. I therefor predict that the indiegarbage Scratch ware gets replaced with AA gaming which falls into the same price segment. Too bad big N had overslept that trend is still flooding its shop with Atari-graphic trash. Just take a look at the very propaganda site that has been founded to push Indiegaming:

A good way to see how the vidya market is going to shape up in coming decades is to look at the current-day movie market, particularly animated movies. On one hand you have AAA studios like Disney shitting out $200 million dollar derivative garbage and making back a billion dollars; on the other hand you have AA studios making $50 million dollar brilliance and making back maybe $75 million. The difference in budget might be because larger studios do metric fucktons of marketing, but the actual QUALITY is not reflected by this (compare "Coco" with "Kubo and The Two Strings").
Even with all things being equal, the only reason the big studios make so much more money is because normalfags gonna normalfag. Just slapping the Disney label on a movie guarantees half the seats will be filled by people who don't even know what the movie is about. It's downright APPALLING that the AA guys are putting out wonderful works that are so underappreciated they barely make back their budget, but at least they still do. That means they will continue to exist; and that gives me hope for a burgeoning AA vidya industry to do the same. What it's going to take is for some indie video game creators to actually continue doing shit and put together something of a company, instead of just resting on their laurels after a single success, or selling out to the first AAA that waves several million dollars at them.
