This is true, but only half the story. The other half is that it really did fail to meet 11 years worth of expectations. It bought into too many "modern" fps memes like linear levels, regen health, and tacticool weapon limit. The game itself was pretty fun, the environments were beautifully detailed, and it was worth the buy.

Yes pretty much this. I could write an entire essay how the game was shit without sperging about Ayylien rape and lewd objects. It started with the manlet sized Duke bust and the moltend diece and just continued with the garbage Level design. All the new weapons were shit, all driving sections were shit. The composition of the levels just shows that they had slapped the game together from all the shit 3DRealms already has made over the years, wrapped it all in ducttape and called it a complete game. Don't forget the real reason it took so long was, that Broussard wanted to have the entire Hoover dam in the game, because he saw how some nerd had cobbled made that in Build and it was impossible in every engine they used for Forever. Have I forgotten something? Oh yeah, how about the lack of Modtools that has shortened the shelve life of the game to like 3 months. I have lurked on the duke4 forums to find out that somebody was able to hack it a little and get a few models out before Gearbox has patched that.
