I only learned of this movie's existence recently. Apparenly premiered today. Who the fuck let this happen, and why? Why would someone make a movie consisting of nothing but references to 100+ properties when getting the rights to put them would likely far outweigh what the movie is capable of grossing? Why would any company think it would be a good idea to lend their shit out in the first place?
I DON'T UNDERSTAND

I saw the movie other than the avatars being characters from game and some really date references there's nothing there. The movie is more 80's film nostalgia than gamer references.

"Plucky group of skilled social misfits fights evil megacorp and wins" It's a huge trope collection masquerading as a novel, but a fair amount of it is lampshaded, so it's not really that cringy. The movie is likely dogshit, as usual.
Compare to the difference betweeen "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" vs the masterpiece that was Blade Runner. (And yes, it's a fucking masterpiece, you plebian shit, even though Harrison Ford is a fucking kike and "muh star wars plebbit")

I can tell without even watching it that RPO is a generic "group of friends find a treasure" adventure story, with a touch of cyberpunk megacorp bullshit. I can tell that it has no valuable information to pass along, no interesting twists, no radical opinions. I can guarantee you, from my computer chair, having never read the book or seen the movie, that it's just okay. It's probably… serviceable. A tween rebellion movie like those Maze Runners or Divergent or Hunger Games, with absolutely nothing new to offer. It should be reviewed as such, garnering… I dunno, 60%? The reviews should say "that same old shit like all those other teen movies, but it doesn't COMPLETELY suck."
But the absolute deluge of references to other properties completely undermine any worth it had by itself. It's bad authoring/movie-making because it won't age well and the references distract from whatever story you're trying to tell, and it's bad in a meta sense because your product should stand on its own feet, not be propped up by other more successful properties. The big-bang-theory-tier obnoxiousness should bring that 60% score down to a 40-50% because it should have critics vomiting in their popcorn buckets.
BUT WHAT THE FUCK DO WE HAVE HERE? For some reason unknown to science, critics apparently think it's pretty good. All the blurbs say shit like "Spielberg obviously loves old movies" like the references SOLD the fucking movie for them. They act like the constant barrage of cameos contributed some fucking heart to an otherwise mediocre movie, and actually RAISED its worth. What the fuck is happening to peoples' minds? I'd expect this from the audience score because those are the assholes who greedily slurp up BBT's firehose stream of liquid shit, but the critics? And the worst part is I'm not even sure it's paid reviews. You don't see the unanimity and ostracizing of dissenting opinions like Cuntbusters or Black Panther had, with the exception of that one stupid article about how Gamergate is responsible for the backlash. There's a decent amount of reviewers who say it's dumb, but NOT ENOUGH BY FAR. Aren't these people supposed to take film more seriously than the average soda-sucking jackass who blows $20 on the latest romcom because they have nothing better to do on the weekend?

And for fuck's sake, stop giving it attention, that's what it wants. That's why it's filled to the brim with empty references. Whether it's disgust or nostalgia, it wants you to gawk at it. That's it's whole fucking schtick. Bad press is still press and all that. Whether you see it as using other works to mask it's own creativity or paying homage to shit you vaguely or slightly remember or not at all for fake nostalgia fanboyism, it's end goal is to invoke a reaction from you. I'm aware of that, and I'm not saying it's impossible that Spielberg actually made something entertaining. I mean, the original trilogy of Star Wars was the most basic ripoff story structure ever, but the universe, likable characters, and all the cool spaceships and stuff made people care and elevated it.
What I'm saying is that no matter how good the base material is, the torrent of references can only detract from its quality. Racing scenes would be cool if it was just a bunch of trackmania cars of no particular real world model. But they shoehorn in the fucking DeLorean, which screams "we weren't confident in our creation's ability to entertain you, so here's something familiar so you stupid soyboys can open your mouths wide in excited recognition." It's like Family Guy's "REMEMBER THAT TIME I _'D WITH _?" jokes.
If everything in the movie/book was original, it could be a classic that BECOMES a reference in the future. But because all it does is draw from other existing things, it will be forgotten, and it's mediocre even in its prime. But nobody besides us can see this.

There's several fan edits of the Hobbit trilogy that remove all the trash and make it much better. The one I watched brought the total runtime down to 2.4 hours I think. The only issue I recall was that they skipped the whole thing with Smaug chasing them around in the mountain and the molten gold, but they kept the scene where he emerged from the mountain and shook the gold off himself. So if you've never seen the trilogy then the presence of the liquid gold on him doesn't make any sense in the edit.

You know how in some games with a trading system, there's always that one item modifier that lowers a stat but increases another, but because there's a cap on how low a stat can go, stacking the modifier a huge number of times actually causes the item to increase in value? It would of been a better movie/story if they expanded upon that and went a grittier route, but then it would also be even more propagandised by the folks producing it im sure. I just don't like that it's obviously going after disenfranchised younger folks and telling them that corporations are evil and the hero is the person who takes it down by running away to virtual reality. A truly cyberpunk outlook would be blaming all involved factions and the hero usurps the VR that's enslaving people to crash the system and lead a revolution in meat space with re-purposed tech, but then that would be the Matrix 2.0

Not really. In Count Zero and the sequels the hacker uploads his girlfriend to VR and then they both beam themselves to Alpha Centauri, and in Snowcrash the hacker just scrapes by alive.

I guess? Not every corp is like that, I'd venture to say most aren't. Then again I get a lot of freedom and perks where I work. At the end of the day I couldn't care less if the company rises or falls except in direct relation to my personal finances. I'd say I see more goonish fanaticism in the consumers of certain products, apple comes to mind and im sure their employees are the same but for every Amazon or Apple there's a ton of honest companies wanting to help customers and their workers. I get the whole megacorp bullshit though and tbh those should of been split up by the gov by now.

TBH im not very well read into traditional cyberpunk novels, lore etc, I know some so maybe im not the best to critique the archetype but that's just what I see with the story telling/world building I am familiar with. Honestly, Snow Crash was a little too fixated on the spear character for my liking, and I found how the author had said villain molest (or fuck, not sure) the heroine of the story just contrived and distasteful. It almost smacked of the author self inserting and read like a hentai plot. Worse, I find that even though I read it only about a year ago, its finer points have faded from my memory and nothing really stands out as a particularly memorable moment.
That's not to say it was a bad story. I think it would still make a better movie than RPO.
I'm not sure why, but seeing that excerpt on masturbation in RPO, it seems that creepy sexual innuendos seem to par for course in these works.
I don't mind sexual content, but I wish more stories handled the matter more like Transmetropolitan; with it being a more natural and relatable component of the story instead of a tonal breakaway where the author commits a textual atrocity with all the subtlety of mashing two coke cans together.

That's overflow. Overflow is where an integer is either smaller or larger than can be represented by the type and flows to the other side. Underflow is when you have a floating point number that should be nonzero, but it's closer to zero than the smallest representable nonzero number, so it drops to zero and usually sets a flag. This can be caused by repeated divides of a floating point number.

Wreck-it Ralph 2 is going to be fucking terrible. It's especially disappointing given how decent the first film was. It could have been a stupid piece of fanservice garbage, but ended up just being a self-contained story about parenthood with minimal references. A lot of stupid faggots didn't like the first one because they wanted it to be some stupid shit where they just run from arcade game to arcade game the whole movie meeting a bunch of video game characters. Looks like they're going to get what they want with this one: a stupid vapid series of references. At least I didn't get my hopes up; as soon as they revealed the title, there was no way it was going to be anything but horrible.

I dunno I might watch the movie I might not. I'll se how the reviews are first. Thought the main girl was being played by Rihanna like in "Valerian". Guess not. Ain't got nothing against her tho.

NatSoc encourages capitalism while shutting down abuses of it, like usury. Hitler's socialism means something very different than socialism means today. He was explicitly against Marxism.

>It's a huge trope collection masquerading as a novel, but a fair amount of it is lampshaded, so it's not really that cringy.
I don't know if this banal level of literary analysis comes from people not reading, or if nobody reads anymore because they value books as nothing but the sum of their tropes and how they're "played." I'm not saying everything has to be Dante to be worth reading, but I think books should aspire to something greater than a collection of "I RECOGNIZE THAT!" moments.
>Lots of idiots disregard a story because of the audience, but that's slave morality talking, not taste.
The audience for this, and pretty much anything else in existence, speaks volumes about what it offers. This story does not contain "reddit cuckery," it is Reddit cuckery - "young adult" (read: teenage) fiction written by a man who never escaped his teenage years, pandering to pop culture-obsessive "nostalgia" and happily rolling in his self-identified "geek" status like a pig in shit.

How did this shit get approved into a movie? Its as if this entire thing was actually Spielberg's shitty idea and he had some no name author make it into a book first to see if it would sell and make a good movie.

It's not that the movies being referenced are sacred, it's that the entire story revolves around referencing other things. It's the Reddit mentality distilled into its purest form and poured into a soulless Hollywood marketing campaign.

I'm glad I never read this when it came out, This is like the equivalent of that book series about talking asses detaching from humans and rebelling as nazi butts, except that one was fucking hilarious and had an actual better plot, there was one bit where the resistance fighter who fought via hypnosis by literally kissing ass betrayed everyone and the whole fucking thing is portrayed as seriously as possible.
Like i've seen some shit in literature because I was an early reader, I was reading at the 8th grade level in 1st grade so I've seen the gamut of the weird and disgusting when it comes to literature, but this shit?
This shit is the most disgusting shit I've ever read, it reads like a 3rd grader wrote it, not because of the subject matter but because of the cadence, syntax and direct nature of the writing, there's a psudo flowery nature to the speech and descriptions, people don't talk like that in most literature, this writing is fucking broken.
The only reason, THE ONLY REASON it got the greenlight in theaters is because the nostaligia shit isn't really working and they're doubling down, so they pulled this shit out of the bottom of the barrel. This is their last resort.
