So im playing Xenoblade Chronicles for the first time and im a bit confused about the affinity chart. For example im following the affinity quest with the nopon who writes the kid a letter to be friends with him. Now the grandfather nopon is not a fan of one of the kids because he is picking on the kid nopon. I have not gotten very far i have been running around doing sidequests and shit. Is affinity only linked to doing things and talking to people at certain times of the day or do I have to progress the main quest to further push random NPC affinities?

The affinity chart in itself is just there to catalog at which hours NPC appear and what happened during the course of the sidequests. For instance, way down the line you might be doing sidequests and someone mentions Palolo. You wonder "who the fuck is Palolo" because the first sidequest you did involving him was dozens of hours ago. The affinity chart is here to tell who he is and who he's related to. That's pretty much it.
Now, there is a mechanic that's much more important and that's affinity levels with the locales. It's the stars in pic related. It's similar to the XC2 mechanic with the titans - do sidequests, talk to people, and you can unlock more affinity levels, which in turn unlock more sidequests. It's the main barrier behind which side content is locked, but there are also some main story milestones you have to reach. It's secondary to the affinity level though.

Honestly the sidequests aren't anywhere near as interesting at the ones in 2, and involve more grind. It's one category in which 2 is the superior game. But if you're doing sidequests in colony 9 without it seeming tiresome then I guess you should be all set for the rest of them.
Oh and also there are two places with timed quests, which are lost if you advance past a certain point. The first one is fairly obvious, the other is much less so since it happens when the plot is turned on its head way late in the main story.

Reviews say the partner AI is dumb as rocks (Not switching to healers when you're dying because their cooldowns are still up, can't set up smash combos reliably- again due to cooldowns- and only you can really do that) and I have no reason to not believe from what I've seen, but I'm curious.

I'm at the begging of chapter 4 and find this game so far to be very hit or miss. Really having a hard time getting to like any of the characters. Get special to level 1. Activate it.
This chains into 1 of two other elements-think branching path. For example, level 1 fire can chain into level 2 fire or level 2 water.
As alluded to above, you chain into the higher level. Every element to chain into gives two possibilities.
So to take Fire for example, you can do level 1 fire, that lets you go into level 2 fire or water and both level 2 fire and water let you chain into level 3 fire (as well as 2 other elementals-remember, you keep branching!)
When you activate level 3 fire, you do your fancy pants minigame, get a pretty explosion. More importantly, you lock an ability of the enemy's.
Fire locks 'Self Destruct'. So if a monster ever tries to activate that ability after you've done level 3 fire on them, it won't work. That's niche as balls but there's others-level 3 dark locks the ability to call in renforcements, another locks the ability to aoe knockdown (Blowdown) and so on. You're still at the beginning of the game, arguably so you've given leeway right now but later on the ability to lock an enemy's move (especially the unique montsters) can make a fight trivial instead of a colossal fucking ballache.
Oh and the Chain Attack thing is you breaking the orbs for loads of damage. Get it right and you can take off over half the cunt's health in one go. Just remember, opposites are easier at breaking orbs, so a water orb will go down in 2 hits from a fire blade, but take 3 or 4 from, say, wind or earth.

Yes. See, in your first picture you're at level 1 water. It can branch to level 2 water or level 2 earth, then level 3 water/dark/wind. So to get seal reinforcements, you'd need to do a level 2 special with a water or earth blade equipped. And yes, that means having II displayed in A of your second pic. But your companions can do it for you. When there's a pop-up to the side of the screen with "ZL" or "ZR" displayed, it means you can press the button and the companion takes care of this step.
One single elemental orb is applied when you've successfully completed a level 3 combo, depending on the element used during the last step.
It's really a system you don't need to fret about, we all understood it progressively. I get the feeling you're trying to run before learning how to walk.

So going on your pic if you use three water elemental supers in a row, you will end up with Seal Stench, and since the final hit is water it will leave a water orb.

If you use a water, then an earth, then an air, you will end up with Seal Blowdown, and the final hit leaves an air orb.
Now when you do your super combo, if you use abilities that are strong against that element, you will break the orb, which will allow you to keep the combo going.
So say you have a water and an air orb on your enemy, you get your team to use fire blades to break the water orb in the first pass of the super combo, which breaks the orb and gives you another run through, then you use earth blades to target the air orb and break that, and you get another round of super combos.
Pic A2 is just a skill tree that ends with a particular elemental orb, which you can break during super combos to make them longer and do even more damage.
BTW each of the seals will do something else to the enemy, such as apply a knockdown effect or (obviously) prevent them from summoning reinforcements, so you get a debuff as well as a chance to extend a super combo.
XC2 has a lot of systems that are only mentioned once and aren't explained super well, but they're also not necessary to succeed. But if you can master the orb combos you'll be able to take down named enemies ten levels higher than you without much effort.

The wiki reports framerate issues with the AMD Radeon R9 270x which is a card that benchmarks very similar to my old GTX card. The Ugly and sloppy NPC models are a perfect example of this mixed bag to contrast against the beautiful character design of the main cast. The parts that are polished are great, but other parts seem rushed and slapped together look like they are from another game. Yet all that in mind, it probably one of the best JRPG's I've played in years.

One of the best parts of of XC2 is the beautiful map design, trying to navigate the sometimes maze like world is top notch. But the fast travel is really immersion breaking and makes no sense in context to the story especially when the main quest is revolving around securing a transport vessel. Just another example of how its a weird mixed bag.

I'm pretty sure you misinterpreted the nanomachines thing (or maybe just expressed it clumsily, I don't know). Klaus only said he created the cloud sea, composed of them, so they could salvage the dead and gone world and recreate life with the materials. So yes, the lifeforms were created thanks to nanites, but they aren't composed of nanites. As for the blades, they're a separate lifeform, they're pretty much components of the pneuma system, living surveillance cameras/guardian angels/continents.

Nah its all nanomachines as that is what powers the "magic" of Alrest. Nia already knew some of this when she beat Malos. Going on about how Malos is made up of the same stuff as everyone else and she can boost their regeneration. She made his nanomachines multiply so fast she inflated that fucker.
She flat out said Malos a Blade a synthetic being that was created from a crystal is made up of the same shit as the "humans" of Alrest.
Its the XBX plot all over again humans are all dead robots have taken their place.
Alrest might seem like a mostly happy dayglow place and the power of friendship is all but scratch deeper and shit gets dark.

really started to love this game once I understood the combo system thanks to my internet fwends. But whenever I try and play I get really sleepy for some unknown reason and nod off. This isn't the first game that has done this too me, and it is not because its boring. This phenomenon happens with other games Persona games for example. When there is comfy music and a rhythmic laid-back gameplay style it becomes hypnotic and lulls me to slumber.

How the fuck did Monolithsoft start with the premise of 'boy meets girl, goes on hero's journey beat for beat' and end up with not only one of the most endearing and engaging jrpgs in years but also the one to do the most justice to the Xeno legacy since gears?
