Watch some Youtube videos or read some articles and papers where the devs talk about the weird optimization shit they did, then realize 99% of it is extremely specific to the Cell architecture and even if you become a gamedev you'll never use any of this shit unless you get into PS3 homebrew.

This is /v/, where no one likes anything. Here's an on-topic response. I like them, they're extremely linear but if you like adventure movies and gunplay they're enjoyable. The CQC mechanics improve as the series progresses. The higher difficulties are hard as balls because the enemies use much more aggressive tactics and spawn in higher numbers. You can blow through the first 3 in a weekend. The PS3 versions are dirt cheap used, and the PS4 remaster collection isn't too pricey either. Part 4 finally gets around to implementing the same grappling hook mechanic that Lara Croft had in Tomb Raider Anniversary 10 years earlier; has a decent story that fills in the gaps about Nate's past and wraps up his adventuring days.
There's a fifth one, but I haven't played it so I can't tell you anything about it. I'm sort of annoyed that they focused it around Chloe and the black chick from 4. Not even Chloe's ass can overcome the twin poisons of (((feminism))) and (((diversity))).

I still think it's because God of War is 13 years old now, and the guys who played it when they were 15 are now getting close to their 30's and starting families - as well as getting older with less time to play games because of real life commitments, so what few skills they might have had are now gone along with their youthful reflexes that let them spam by the earlier games. So, the obvious choice is to make Kratos a slow old man with a kid so that players will "identify" more with the character that's "grown with them". The 25-35 demographic absolutely seems to be the market they're aiming for with this.

1 is a pretty standard early 7th gen third person shooter. It's okay, but it hasn't aged very well and has been mostly outdone by 2 and 4. The part towards the end where it turns into a horror game for a few chapters is still fun, though.
2 is good.
3 is garbage.
4 is the best in almost every way, including in terms of stealth, shooting, level design, melee, gameplay variety and platforming (which finally has more to it than just occasionally pressing X with very lenient timing). However, it doesn't really get started until chapter 4, the lack of any supernatural elements is disappointing and the additions to platforming are severely underused.
2, 3 and 4 all have good multiplayer but 2's is/was the best.
