>has to choose either a painful death or a life of service to the guild of sorcerers that hunt monsters due to his sorcerous abilities
>is put through grueling training alongside a young sorceress named Sortiara in order to prepare for the life of an Avalon sorcerer
>at the end of his training, he is forced to duel his partner to the death and sacrifice her
>by devouring her soul he also absorbs her memories, as well as the curse she carried, which gave him an insatiable bloodlust that grows ever more ravenous with time
>is now a fully fledged sorcerer, which means his life will be one of neverending murder of formerly human monsters until he dies or turns into a monster himself due to devouring too many souls
>gains a new partner named Magusar, who is cursed with immortality due to devouring too many souls
>Magusar reveals a premonition he had of a ruined, post-apocalyptic world ushered in by a cursed sorcerer, one that looked just like Librom
>Magusar promises Librom that if they cannot cure him of his curse, then he will slay him in order to save the world
>they set off on a quest together in order to prevent the prophesy from coming true by finding the legendary wish granting Chalice
>this same Chalice is also responsible for creating so many of the monsters in the world, as it grants their wishes in such a way that it horribly perverts them in the process
>they hunt and slaughter their way across the lands, tasting the memories of monsters to hunt down the Chalice, all the while Librom's curse grows stronger
>while they're searching for the Chalice, the two of them are ambushed by a mad sorceress who claims to be Magusar's old love
>Magusar denies ever knowing her, driving her to a murderous rage
>the two of them defeat her and Magusar sacrifices her, gaining her memories
>she really was Magusar's old love, and not only does Magusar not remember, he's not Magusar
>the real Magusar was sacrificed long ago, and the weight of his soul was so powerful that the sorcerer who sacrificed him, the one that the sorceress had loved, became Magusar. And Magusar had no love for the sorceress
>the sorceress was also the mother of Sortiara, who is actually her clone granted to her by the Chalice because she couldn't bear to live a life without her beloved
>eventually she revealed Sortiara's origins to her, and she buckled under the weight of knowing she was never truly human, but merely a construct
>this knowledge gave her a seething hatred of the world and everyone in it, which developed into the incurable bloodlust that she gave to Librom after he sacrificed her
>Magusar is struck with a crisis of identity, now knowing he is not who he thought he was, his false self and his lost self battling within him for dominance
>there is no more time left before the end of the world
>at this moment, the Chalice appears, and offers to grant a wish, if they would sacrifice something of equal value
>Magusar, possessed by greed, prepares to slay Librom so that he may be cured of his immortality, and recover his true self
>Librom, having already felt the pain of sacrificing his best friend, submits and tells Magusar to slay him
>right before the ritual is finished, Magusar is seized by the dissonance in his soul and runs away
>Librom chases after him, refusing to let his old friend suffer alone
>when he finds him, the cursed soul within him, the true Magusar, has overtaken him utterly, twisting him into a hideous abomination coursing with magickal might
>Librom is slain on the spot, unable to resist
>the old Magusar, still existing somewhere within the new beast, takes control long enough to sprinkle his blood on him, granting Librom eternal life
>the true Magusar regains control and butchers Librom once more, only for the old one to take control and bring him back to life
>this continues for innumerable ages, Librom losing track of time through the endless repetitions of torturous deaths and miraculous revivals
>after an eternity of butchery, the new Magusar grows tired of eviscerating Librom, and creates an army of flesh golems that spread over the lands, destroying towns and capturing people for Magusar to sacrifice, building labyrinthine prisons to contain Magusar's sacrificial hosts
>Librom, experiencing firsthand the horror of immortal life, swears to kill his old friend so that he may free him from his bondage within his own body
>harnessing the power contained within Magusar's potent immortal blood, Librom transforms himself into a fleshy grimoire, and transports himself into the cells of Magusar's prison to teach the prisoners magic, that they might grow powerful enough to end Magusar once and for all
>then the game starts
