lately I have been playing a lot of games and just wondered "what if they did a X spinoff?" X being genre. for example I was playing XCOM a while ago and wondered what if they made a proper tactical shooter based on investigating crashed alien ships, and apparently they were but they scrapped it and released some other arcade shooter that everyone hated.

on the other hand you have spin-offs that not only happen but are better than the main game like Pokemon mystery dungeon.

I get some people hate it when publishers just make a game and slap an IP on it but if done well I think spin-offs would be great for everyone.

I wish spin off were more common, there are so many games I like the setting of but just dislike the the genre.

Publishers would too, it lowers the risk of your non-cashcow games since you can tack them on as a spinoff for brand awareness instead as a original title. But for the most part most IPs don't have that range due to the setting, tone, or themes of their series.

pic related is another fantastic example, Spin-offs are a cool way for established franchises to explore new gameplay without the main series losing sight of its roots.

I played Super Mystery Dungeon. It was rather boring and mediocre, even though I beat the game. I kept waiting for it to get good and it never happened.

Fantastic taste OP

I wish more good spinoffs existed, but it almost feels like certain franchises are cursed. Atlus and Intelligent systens as companies are examples of this.

Pokemon in general has fantastic spinoffs: The Mystery Dungeon games, Pinball, Snap, and Pokken are all amazing.

Pokken especially is 10/10, it's unironically one of the best if not the best competitive fighting games out right now, it just unforantely got screwed over by TPCI's incompetence at marketing and demographic issues (casuals hate it because they actually need to git gud and WHERE'S MUH OBSCURE FAVORITE MON, and FGC people incorrectly assume it;s made for casuals)

This amused me

Its hard to quantify "boring" but its just that. Boring, and kiddified more than any pokemon game I've ever played to the point of being campy. I've heard the story is shit as well, but I only went a few hours in before I couldn't handle any more of it and had to put it down, plus the 2.5D graphics disgusted me

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is amongst my favourite games of all times, and Super Pokemon Mystery Dungeon just didn't capture the spirit of adventure the older games had. First of all, your character isn't even really an adventurer, you play as a pokemon who gets adopted and has to go to pokemon school.

Instead of solving cool mysteries or rescuing pokemon in need of help you get the feeling that whatever you do you aren't being taken serious.

That also reflects in the gameplay mechanics, at some point you can temporally recruit other pokemon which are way stronger than you and basicly just serves as a way to prevent failure. On top of that this recruiting system feels very artificial, the pokemon you recruit don't really interact with you in any way before they join your team

It's just pretty obvious overall that the game is aimed at 10 year olds
