In news about DDLC, I was wondering why it was trending again on kym. Turns out the entry got updated with a number of mods that have come out for it. The sequel. Despite it being a sequel it's actually fairly standalone: all the new characters and their routes stem from a route that never appeared in the first game. A few routes are direct epilogues of the first game's routes however

Standalone 'fandiscs' that feature 3 routes per game for characters that didn't get routes in the first two games. Again, some are epilogues of routes (mainly a few from S) and all of the routes assume you've played the first game and/or S so they make no attempt to ease you into the setting.
The great thing about the games are the writing. All the characters are genuinely likeable (even the nasty ball of spite that's Kokoro becomes sympathetic in the second game when you get to know her) the serious stuff feels like it (despite how ludicrous the actual scenario is, especially for the 'special' route in S) and the funny is hilarious. The weird bit to me is some of the voice actors; there's a few main ones, and a few minor characters that are instantly recognisable like Jun Fukiyama. I know they do it under aliases but with the stigma these games have I'd have thought that they'd avoid this sort of game. It's doubly weird for some like Fukiyama because this is after Code Geass so he sure as hell ain't doing it to scrape by as a no-name actor.

Key went and made a 5 part series following the events of Planterian. Hoshi no Hito (the movie) follows the events of a follow up light novel I think that takes place afterward, Stargazer trudges through the snow to an colony taken up by humans.
The movie itself is about 20% new material, as they copy paste pretty much everything from the 5 part series. So you can just watch the movie and get everything from that, or just skip to the new stuff like I did. I do recommend seeing what happens to Stargazer, as I don't think the LN was ever translated.

Art we decent. Writing was par for the course for this kind of content and it actually played with the meta narrative with the writing. The girls were pretty cookie cutter but I found that necessary to deconstruct tropes in the meta narrative so it makes sense in that regard.
I'm sure if you've viewed countless VNs across the years you will have encountered such meta-narratives and deconstructions before so it may have felt recycled for you. For many, however, this may have been their first or second VN after katawa shoujo. I wouldn't say DDLC is on par with KS but it's not as terrible as you're making it out to be. It's short and mediocre.

It's not a question of quality, but oversaturation. It may not seem like it from our perspective, but a fuckload of VNs are released every year in Nipland. Competition is tighter, especially considering eroge are now competing with mobage as otaku's preferred games. It's difficult for newcomers to break in, so many devs end up creating simple, SOL games where you just spend time with the heroines, occasionally getting a semblance of plot and world building. That and I find it somewhat ironic that pretty much every woman Yuuji has come across is helping him in some way.

Damn this arc is pretty damn good. They ditched the school stuff and went balls deep into the international affairs and spy stuff that Yuuji is usually involved with. Which is funny because this story focuses on him for like 5% - 10%, it instead follows the girls trying to get him back. If you suspend your disbelief, it's pretty enjoyable.

Kazuki devises a plan to destroy Thanatos for good by cutting an undersea cable that supplies it with power. Michiru of course is sent to do this.

On one hand it's good that I can tell all the things translated wrong from the voice, but every second line is translated wrong. They also insert swearing into the internal monologue as well as some of the dialogue that obviously wasn't there in the original, replace, insert and remove references at random, often completely fuck up the intent of lines. I've no idea how can someone write something this bad and pass it on as a finished, paid product. It would be rude even for a fan translation.

Another victim for the belly of Sekai and another VN ruined for the western audience. But it looks like people are getting pretty annoyed by them. The comments of Gematsu show that many are upset with Sekai for not providing their physical merch and constantly making kickstarters despite being a company that's making money from all their old projects. Where is that money possibly going into? People are also upset about how they're too lazy to remove mosaics most of the time.

There's no H scenes in this arc, strangely enough. I suspect that they're all reserved for the after story, where Yuuji gets to spend time with Yumiko, Makina, Sachi, Michiru, Amane, Chizuru, Harudera and Kazuki. He basically started his own commune.

I like this prologue. Follows Yumiko just after she spent a month at Mihama. Amane, Michiru, Makina and then Sachi show up in that order and you see her become more friendly. You can then get why she attacked Yuuji with her box cutter on his first day.
This prologue sorta reminds me of Leisure but actually ties into before the main story. It's also a nice idea to run the story from Yumiko's perspective.

The imouto route was weird. Something something, watch summons imouto from the past, then you have like 2 hours of happy family time where for some reason you're playing house full-time and PC becomes papa, imouto mama, past-imouto daughter. This segment is sugar sweet and somewhat boring. But then, past-imouto has to go back, lots of crying ensues because everyone was getting really used to playing house. But then, turns out she wasn't past imouto, but future daughter.
It had such a different atmosphere, and not necessarily for the better. So far it was the only route that contained anything even remotely tragic in the ending, but more importantly, I really wasn't sold on the incest aspect of it. There really wasn't any deliberation of the taboo, the imouto and the PC just got slightly more intimate as the route went on, on the sidelines. The focus was pretty much always the past-imouto, and how much they've matured thanks to being pretend-parents for a few weeks. It was sweet and it was sad, but way too much of both. Compared to any other route it was fairly lacking on comedy as well.

And so we come to the true nature of the afterstory, who's going to be Yuuji's bride. The girls have been sharing him around but Kazuki doesn't think this can last, so she wants to pick one girl out. It's going for the harem tropes but at this point, I think the series has earned it. Yumiko was bathing alone and Yuuji wandered in, the other girls came in and they both hid in the closet. They have a pact drawn up that bath time is neutral ground and if they discovered Yumiko was hogging the only guy on the island, well, it'd be like throwing raw meat to starving lions.

Might as well write up a review for Grisaia. I wouldn't mind updating the chart as I spotted a few spelling mistakes and I can finally write a synopsis for Rakuen.
Fruit of Grisaia and it's derivatives are long, bloody long. The common path for Fruit is easily 20 - 30 hours long, at least 60 scenes. But you slowly learn about the girls and Yuuji as well. One thing that's different from this than Majikoi is that Yamato does have a personality but he's a self insert without much important history. Yuuji here really is his own problem and he goes through so much shit before the VNs even begun. I think that was a weakness though, starting In-Media-Res. If they had the stuff with Kazuki, Asako then Mihama, I think the story would fit better.
The girls themselves are some of the most fleshed out heroines I've ever come across. The way they all call each other differently and the group dynamics such as Makina and Amane being mother/child while Michiru and Makina are more like a comedy group, they each get along well with each other even after Yuuji arrives. The various heroines you know are damaged going into this but when you hear the full extent… fuck man, it's honestly some depressing shit. Makina seeing her father bleed to death in front of her and then staying near his decomposing body for 4 days. Sachi seeing her parents hit by a truck on her bloody birthday after having a fight with them, coincidentally being the day that Yuuji had to move away after Kazuki and Amane were involved with the bush crash a few weeks earlier. Michiru saw her only friend commit suicide infront of her and Yumiko suffered a nervous breakdown with a boxcutter, hurting someone? I'm not sure. Dark stories man, and I've seen tragedy before but part of the reason it hurts is that you get to know the girls after such events and eventually Yuuji can heal them.
You do learn some valuable lessons though, Yuuji being a coward has actually made me reassess such behavior. The heroes end up dead and in song while the cowards live and propagate the heroes. The note that while some people are strong like Yuuji, there are also weak ones that need help to be carried.
As for who my favorite girl is, Well… I've come to appreciate Yumiko more this section of the Arc I think, she has more time interacting with other people instead of just Yuuji so you get to see some new sides to her. Michiru hasn't really changed that much, if there's a constant between all the arcs is that Michiru never changes too much. Makina got to show off her sniping skills this chapter at least. But I'd probably still have a hard time deciding between Sachi and Amane. Adding tanlines doesn't help either. Also really glad Kazuki finally got to demonstrate her intellect. I really like her in Angelic Howl so her finally being a piece on the board as it were was good to see, shame it took till the last arc to finally see her.
Grisaia is long, Paris to Bejing on foot long. But after waiting 3 years for the translation and finally getting through the main paths and even the side stuff, I can see the reason all three main titles are ranked inside the top 50 on VNDB. I'm tired, but it's a good tired. And I'd recommend Grisaia to anyone who wants to get lost in a VN with darkness and a bloody good story. You start off watching Yuuji transfer to a new school and the next he's speaking to his supposed dead sister who was used as the brain for the national defense of Japan. A slow build up and seems absurd but by that point it's earned it.
Kinda difficult to surmise 100+ hours of VNs I think.

Last post, swear to Maria-sama. While Majikoi and Grisaia both have sex, I didn't start playing them for the sex. They have such a good story that the sex between two characters actually helps characterize them, like Yuuji and Yumiko trading barbed quips.
