515cfd No.14008978

>“Not just limited to games for smartphone or console, but we do have some global titles lined up,” Matsuda replied. “However, regardless of whether they’re for smartphone or console, there’s a difficult element to developing global titles, so we’ll be making them without focusing too much on the ‘global’ aspect.”

>“For example, in the past, when we developed console games with a worldwide premise, we lost our focus, and not only did they end up being games that weren’t for the Japanese, but they ended up being incomplete titles that weren’t even fit for a global audience.”

>Matsuda continues, “On the other hand, there are games like the JRPG we made for the Japanese audience with the proper elements, Bravely Default, which ended up selling well all around the world.”

>“Due to having split [the development mindset] according to regions around the world, we weren’t able to see this clearly up until now, but fans of JRPGs are really spread around the world,” emphasizes Matsuda. “Through the means of various networks, the latest information that is announced in Japan is instantaneously being spread across fans throughout the world. Whether it’s North America, Europe, or South America. There really isn’t much of a gap [in the relay of information].”

>“With that in mind, and all of the collective fans, there’s a sense of mass, which loses the image of a niche market,” continues Matsuda. “For the new games we’ll be developing from this point on, while this may sound a bit extreme, we’ve been talking about making them as heavy JRPGs. I believe that way, we can better focus on our target, which will also bring better results.”

>“If you focus too much on the global aspect, you might lose sight of who you’re actually making the game for,” explains Matsuda. “For example, if you look back at 2013, we’ve had some home console games made for a global audience that struggled.”

>“The development team for Hitman: Absolution really struggled in this regard. They implemented a vast amount of ‘elements for the mass’ instead of for the core fans, as a way to try getting as many new players possible. It was a strategy to gain mass appeal. However, what makes the Hitman series good is its appeal to core gamers, and many fans felt the lack of focus in that regard, which ended up making it struggle in sales.”

>“So, as for the AAA titles we’re currently developing for series, we basically want to go back to their roots and focus on the core audience, while working hard on content that can have fans say things like ‘this is the Hitman, we know’. I believe that is the best way for our development studios to display their strengths.”

Why didn't Square Enix follow through on this? The only "Good" title I know of them recently releasing in Nier Automata which is more the work of Platinum and Yoko's team than Square as a whole.

Sounds like some PR-speak if you ask me. Point being, the good people at Square Enix don't actually believe those things, and they're just pulling shit out of their ass for a scheduled interview to give the press something to report on.

>titles that weren’t even fit for a global audience

Is this just a translation error, or is he deliberately saying that the global audience is "lesser" than the japanese one Grammatically this sentence is the same as saying "not even fit for the dog".

I think it may have been along the lines of

>It was no longer made to be fit for the older core audience, but in trying to do so, it was not even fit for the newer intended audience as well.

What he is saying is what /v/ has been saying ever since vidya started being casualized. Going for the biggest audience possible only hurts games that were not originally designed that way. By catering to the masses of idiots who don't really care about your niche product in the first place, you will end up disappointing the original audience and will also fail to attract the retards, since they only really care about cawadoody, cinematic experiences, screamerstreamer bait or ASSFAGGOTS exclusively.

If he "gets it" then why do they keep on repeating the same dumb moronic shit? Stocks call the shots.

Nothing you say matters if you can't make a single good game for over a decade.

6336db No.14012082

Square Enix were never relevant. The merger ruined them and they haven't developed a single good game. In fact they aren't capable as all the talent left years ago.

>Why didn't Square Enix follow through on this?

The only real game they released inbetween then and now was FFXV, which had already been in development for far too long. Aren't they working on project octorok?

Maybe Bravely Second underperforming made them change their mind? Like one other anon said they released FF15 and that game was a steaming pile of 10 year old shit. Not even a JRPG just a shit action game.

d549f0 No.14016855

bravely second was just poorly received everywhere, in japan because it wasn't very good, and everywhere else because it wasn't very good and was censored to hell and back. Market strategy is a slow burning thing, and when they announce market plans they aren't really utilized for a release project until 2 years. Most of you likely won't even hear about that game the strategy is being used on until a year before its launched, and I guarantee you in a week no one will remember this thread.

How well did FF15 went, saleswise speaking?

817012 No.14022193

Well, if he said that in 2014 and the develpment period of a "heavy jRPG" is about 5 years, we're will only see if they followed through with that in 2018~2019.

I've been burned enough times to not believe a single word these people say, but if you still have hope the next two years will show if they were truthful or not.

Oh no, don't go there anon, we all just don't want to hype and get disappointed again…

a35580 No.14029017

All I want is a 'heavy JRPG', with complex systems. I don't get why they keep moving to action shit. I really hope this is true. But I guess that means I'll have to buy a Switch if it is true…

Who made this video because I want to give him money for "getting" it. So many fanboys who still live in denial that Square Enix hasn't made a good game in 15 years now.
