what if you swap the n64 controller's B and A buttons physically? Then you can use A presses as much as you want with them being done on a B button.

The saddest thing is, they only need one A Press to do a 0 A press 70 star run. It's the one to get off the pole in Bowser in the Fire Sea, which can't be avoided since that level itself is unavoidable. They need a lot of vertical height which is really hard to gain, sadly. Pannenkoek said that he'd make a full TAS of the 70 star run if they found a way to avoid that one press.

The most common explanation for that was a random memory glitch, because some people started manipulating memory values, and messing with one particular byte resulted in a near identical outcome. It's a shit conclusion, and seems hand-wavey, but no one has a better one as of now.

It had to do with a ceiling and a particular angle. He figured it out and applied it to Bowser/Fire and can almost beat that level without an A press, dislodging from the pole being the only obstacle.
