It's an arcadey Sim with Big Stompy Mechs which you can customize. Installer comes with custom maps and Mekteks Mekpak expansions so there is plenty of content to play with. Also comes with the Single Player Campaign. Sadly no trap mechs.

Installation
Literally just run the installer.
Linuxfags will need to use wine and run the game with wine MW4Mercs.exe -noautoconfig -window /gosnoblade /gosusehw /gosnodialogs /gosnovideo it will still crash when closing, such is the price of freedom.
Mouse and keyboard users are recommended to download this WASD-based control scheme (readme with instructions on where to stick it are included) https://files.catbox.moe/ky4u1n.7z , it also comes with preconfigured easy-use mechs.

I'm afraid we're using goyranger lads: https://www.gameranger.com/download/ (we'll rotate to USA hosts once we hit USA hours). If goyranger lags for you try opening port 16000 TCP/UDP but that shouldn't be necessary.

FAQ
Why won't it work properly on Windows 8, 8.1 or 10?
Because you picked a retarded OS. Try adding -windowed and /gosnojoystick to the target line of the shortcut (right click, create shortcut, properties, target) so it looks something like "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries MP 3.1\MW4Mercs.exe" -windowed /gosnojoystick
Why does it lag?
It shouldn't but try opening port 16000 TCP/UDP. Or don't live in fucking Australia, when a country has exploding trees and fucking Orks Abbos at every corner it's trying to tell you to leave.
How do I widescreen?
Options -> Video. Note that the menus will always be low resolution, the actual game will be widescreen.

Quick Start Guide for New Players Part 1
I'll say again to make sure fags notice: download this https://files.catbox.moe/ky4u1n.7z and follow the readme (it's the same file linked in the OP if you have that already). It comes with preconfigured mechs and WASD-friendly controls.
They are 12 Beginner friendly Mechs, 8 of them are Brawlers good at close range while 4 are better at longer range Fire Support. There are 4 Missile Boat Mechs that take a bit more but not a lot of experience to use since they will build up a fair amount of Heat and require you to lock targets. The names are in the charts (picsrelated) but here's the list if just in case:
>Brawlers
Cauldron-Born, Daishi, Hellhound, Hunchback IIC, Loki, Mad Cat MK II, Uller and Wolfhound
>Fire Support
Blood Asp, Marauder, Puma and Shadowcat
>Missile Boats
Black Lanner, Catapult, Longbow and Owens
Gameplay
Standard gamemode we will be playing is Battle mode which gives you points determined on how much damage you do. Lighter mech kills are worth less than heavier mech kills. There are a few other gamemodes which are pretty self explanatory, objective based modes tend to have limited or no respawns and so require a fair bit of teamwork.
Radar
We will be typically running Advanced Radar mode which makes the game a fair bit more tactical: objects that break line of sight such as hills, buildings, walls and even trees will disrupt your ability to detect opponents but also allow you to hide. Beagle Active Probe (BAP) allows you to see through objects such as walls and buildings unless an opponent is running ECM. Typically a Brawler build should run in Passive Radar mode for stealth while Ranged and Missile builds should use Active Radar mode for tracking targets.
Damage
Damage is locational, you can lose weapons etc. You will only be destroyed if your Mech suffers critical damage (losing your torso, having both legs destroyed or losing your head).
Heat
If too much heat builds up your Mech will slow down and eventually shutdown or even destroy itself if you overheat while using Jump Jets or override the shutdown. Custom loadouts need to have sufficient Heat Sinks to offset the buildup from weapons.
Mechs
Lighter Mechs tend to be faster and harder to hit. Heavier Mechs tend to be slower and able to carry more weapons. There are exceptions to this rule. Mechs vary in what they can equip weapons and equipment wise. Some Mechs designated “OmniMechs” come with Omni Hardpoints which gives them a lot more flexibility with loadouts but they are usually more expensive.

Quick Start Guide for New Players Part 2
1. Crosshair. Red means you're aiming at an enemy. A yellow circle means you've got missile lock. Be careful, enemy mechs will explode when killed.
2. Your weapons. Blue is selected group, yellow means recharging and red means jammed. Jammed is bad.
3. Combatant statuses. Left picture is your target, right picture is your mech. Orange and Red components are damaged. The , and . keys let you change how this looks for clarity.
4. Heat levels, red is bad and means shutdown. Hotheads can override the shutdown but you might explode (always a bit embarrassing in the middle of a battle).
5. Coolant, if you've got it it lets you quickly drop a lot of heat but it's limited in amount.
6. Radar, can toggle this between sneaky breeki Passive Radar and NSA-spy Active Radar
And that's all you really need to know, advanced users can read these other links and some experienced fags will hang around the thread to answer any questions you've got but don't get scared off because this shit isn't too hardcore. I'll be going in almost as blind as you cunts.

From what I gather they're worth very little as kills, basically disposable cannon fodder. You can die ~4x as often as a heavier mech and if you kill one heavy fag you'll still come out on top in terms of team points.

Remember, Battletech and by consequence, Mechwarrior are a Combined Arms wargame. You don't just fight with mechs like in MWO, it's an all out war, therefore tanks, troopers and a lot more is deployed.
Mechwarrior Living Legends is a good post-mechwarrior 4 game.

Other games were made that over-shadowed mechwarrior. Here's the short list: Every FPS ever. Plus consoles got better over time. But the biggest contribution to its decline was the fact that the company that made it, FASA went bankrupt like three times. In MW4 Battlearmor actually can have it's uses in many cases a lot more so than in MWLL if you are playing Advanced Radar, since they are extremely hard to detect and even harder to hit. The problem is they are also hard to play against Mechs and you also need to know what map your on to take advantage of terrain.
I wouldn't worry too much about them unless we play a Battlearmor Map.

And actually, they're medium ranged. They can engage at 400 meters, a mere 250 less than a large laser, and longer than even ER medium lasers by 100 meters.
As for approach, a simple LRM-5 can help you to dislodge and disrupt an enemy at long range.
Since everyone makes gauss and ER boats anyways, you get to walk in and wreck while everyone is trading long range fire for the whole match.
Unless everyone focus fires you, but being at long range isn't going to help you there.

So because MW4 is an older game, it isn't updated with modern GPUs. Depending on the type of GPU you have will determine what its settings are. Because it didn't recognize what GPU I was using, my game kept crashing whenever I'd load a map. With this fix, I found I didn't need to run it in compatibility mode or make a shortcut, but I'm not sure about other systems. Keep in mind I'm basing this off of Windows 8.1, but I'm sure this works with other versions of Windows:

>right click on your GPU and click properties
>go to details
>in the property menu, click on device instance path
>you should see something along the lines of PCI\VEN_XXXX&DEV_XXXX…
>now open up VideoCard.txt in your MW4 directory

You have to use dxwnd to force the game into using Direct X 9.
