If you're into horror/mystery games check out 雨格子の館 (Amagoushi no Yakata) for PS2 and PSP. It combines a VN a randomly generated Who Done It kind of scenario. You play as a college student who heads off to his part time job during summer vacation and has a car accident in the forest. After finding a house and going to ask for help he comes upon a corpse and faints. When he wakes up he is surrounded by the inhabitants of the house. They are mostly actors there for a screen reading of a new performance, but what are they really there for?
Basically you talk to the chacters and make your choices, and based on who you talk to, what rooms you go to, items you find, at specific times, you get different outcomes where different people are murdered. If you want to figure out the entire plot you are obviously going to have the play the game multiple times.

Well that's why I try to stay away from anything like that but there are some ones that are really good. Hayarigami 流行り神 has some features like that. It's another horror mystery game set in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Unsolved Case Files, where you play a detective who is part of a group that investigates strange and occult cases. You have a question based mini-games where you review the clues of the case up to that point and have to come ot a decision that will effect your route. Near the end of the route you play another one of the same mini-game where you choose, based on your answers, whether you follow the scientific path or the occult path.
You also have a logic puzzle at the end where you match the suspects with the key words that you acquired along the investigation. Sometimes if you don't make the right decision you won't get a special key word that would allow you to get a perfect match, most likely preventing you from solving the case and seeing the real ending.
The whole mise en scene of the game is amazing and perfectly, but the writing, while excellent, would be hard for even an intermediate speaker of Japanese because of the characters mostly being adults and the game deals with the scientific, the supernatural, fokelore, religions, the dead, etc. the vocabulary and grammar is much more complex than your average game.
Speaking of how linear things have got, I started to play through 428: Shibuya Scramble 428: 〜封鎖された渋谷で〜 (which is to be localized next year) which is a spirtual successor to Machi 街 ～運命の交差点～. Unlike the first game it's actually much more linear than I expected. As the game opens up it gets more non-linear but the introduction of that game you only have the choice to play from one and then two characters from quite a bit. It also sometimes forces you into playing just as one character until their scenario ends, as with the first one you were constantly zapping back and forth.

I would say give it a try. Know this though, the beginning of the VN shows the ending. Which is apocolyptic and chuuni as hell. I don't have the desire to check out the phantom trigger arc but the original Grisaia arc is pretty good. First game is long, common path took me about 3 days to get through as there was so many scenes in that but once it started branching, you find out more about the heroines. Labyrinth has after stories for all the girls and continues the common path a bit with the girls learning Yuuji's messed up childhood. Haven't been through Paradise yet, so I don't know how that ends. But I would recommend the series if you want a good story with plenty of tragedy.

Idols is an unrelated story but uses the same characters. Mostly focuses on Michiru. There's also Leisure which follows some of the girls around a day at school, Melody which follows Yuuji on a mission in the US (And is really good) and Afterglow, which focuses on Asako and Julia's past.
And yep, the after stories in Labyrinth pick up right after their paths end in Garden. Examples without spoiling, Michiru keeps on being the idiot she is, like wanting a winter date with Yuuji but in summer so she's wearing cold weather gear in the middle of summer. Sachi's one is all about trust and is so bloody sweet.

Those are the 2 routes I completed so far. I dropped the VN some years ago in the middle of Sachi route. I don't really like flashbacks, and even though Amane's route was good, they fucking extended the flashback way too much. There's barely any route, in fact. Sachi's flashback is shorter, but I still dropped it at that point I did Amane's first. I'm in the middle of Sakaki's route, after the flashback, and honestly, so far I'm really liking it.
