tfw i feel exactly the same even after getting into games like MoW and learning of the epic metas
the idea of carefully setting up defenses and thinking about all the possible ways the enemy could attack while enjoying some tea is just top comfy, as is being able to do cool shit like make nice bases, heavy fortifications and doing logistics, even the idea of having sort-of small time politics in larger RTS games like supcom
I think it would be perfectly possible for a game to succeed at it if A - metas were fixed proper and B - there was some reason to -not- just spam/attack aggressively with those build queues you took from some cringy fags youtube strategy "guide". A lot of people just seem to go with the "it can't happen" or "hurr it wont be like videogames then" angle though.
Intense battles can be fun, but same-old bullshit build queues and rushing to kill eco is just plain boring in a lot of games, especially when they have "game ender" units because nobody is creative enough to come up with an actual strategy to break a stalemate, better end the game artificially so you can go back and spend another 20 minutes in an eco race just to see who can spam the most.
I think a game where time wasn't so important would help alleviate it as well, like a big campaign map where your units carry over and you get punished for just spamming from the getgo. Grand Strategy like Hearts of Iron does this well although those are obviously completely different from RTS.
As for tips to enjoy games like that, i guess MoW on Frontlines mode with a mod to give defenders more time in the beginning could work, or SupCom if you use the FaF lobby settings to limit the economy buildings to tier 2 on a large map, and disable a few units/techs, that should make the game slower and reward deliberate, long strategic decisions as well as tipping the balance in favor of defense and making tier 3 units too expensive to solely use upon unlocking them.
There was also a versus-AI mod for the first MoW Assault Squad that allowed you to set up defenses for a very long time before being met with a never ending attack to see how long you'd last.
