and some others that I don't remember. Overall, Riot.im could be what you are looking for. It is a client for https://matrix.org/. It has voice chat, multiple channels can be made, variety of settings, etc. Probably the closest system you can get to Discord.

I'm not talking about a replacement for the entire thing but rather a replacement for the client and fooling the discord servers that it's a genuine discord client. I would love to tell them to fuck off to IRC or Riot but they wouldn't do it. It would be fantastic since you'll be able to have your cake (in the fact that you're using their services) and eat it too (by avoiding a lot of the datamining shit for simply not using their client).

The best I've found so far is betterdiscord but it looks like a simple plugin that actually modified discord in anyway. It's something to consider, possibly someone could find a way to write a plugin to disable/cut out all the datamining shit (although I'm sure it would both break upon every update and the pajeets will be right on breaking that as much as possible).

I use telgram as a general text chat and discord as a voice chat, I don't know why people are suggesting IRC as a replacement for discord

The only real competitor is Teamspeak, but even if it's pisseasy to host a server, no one wants to do that (mainly because of datacaps if burger or shitty speeds)

Also you can upload pics directly to discord and that's useful (at least for me)

Discord is obviously the best thing available right now. Comparing it to shit like mumble is ridiculous because discord is essentially a social network. People use discord as a default for online chatting now outside of video games. normalfags use it like they would facebook.

I'm by no means shilling for it and have uninstalled it myself and always despised it for being botnet. But the reality is that it is going to continue to dominate the scene and get bigger every single day because of how unbelievably accessible it is. Being able to paste a link into chat and have someone click and be instantly in VOIP with you without having to install a single program is going to guarantee that it becomes the staple for online voice communication for a very long time.
