SWITCH STANCES

Not only do the different stances give you quicker/more powerful attacks, but the low stance gives you more i-frames and has less recovery than the others.

Also, you don't need to do the full triangle x3 combo every time you have an opportunity to get a hit in, you can interrupt your attacks with dodges (which is more effective if you switch stances while attacking, particularly switching to low stance). Don't think of it like a Souls game, attacks are significantly less committal in Nioh.

<If you are fighting something tough, use buffs. You'll feel silly dying without using all your resources.

This is one of those bosses where you have to learn their tells and git gud. You're early on so there's no way of cheesing it. Focus on slapping his ass, especially in high stance.

i can't tell you if this is Universally Agreed Strategy material, but when i'm learning and feeling out a new boss I always do it in medium stance because it's that balance of speed, dodge and power. don't get fancy with stance changes until you know exactly what you're doing. at this early stage you can, largely, just brute-force your way in; you don't need to worry about the crazy stance changes everyone's suggesting. later, once you've unlocked some techniques for your chosen weapon(s) you'll have more tools in the box to pull out, but at this stage i'd recommend switch to middle stance, focus on learning his patterns, and whack his stupid ass when he gives you that big opening. also, spirit mode you fucking gaylord it's basically a Fuck You Boss I Win button at the early levels

In Nioh, the skill trees for weapons are all different but every single one of them includes a skill tree where you get the ability to ki pulse and change stances at the same time. You don't need to be a professional at the start, but you should really make it a habit to tap that R1 button every time you finish a combo, and master the timing of it. You can get back almost all the stamina you spent on your combo by doing this and launch another devastating combo.

Well, in addition to the skill tree I mentioned before, every weapon also has a skill you can get for every stance, which is always "If you switch to this stance as you are ki pulsing, your next attack does more damage. " On top of that, if your first combo stuns the enemy (This can happen frequently with Oni because breaking their horns leaves them stunned) you can switch into high stance and turn your target into fucking paste.

Remember to switch stances.

Have living weapon fully charged and ready to save your bacon.

Guardian Spirit talismans. You should always have those equipped unless you're using a spirit built around augmenting you rather than direct attacking. And even then it still doesn't hurt now that we get 4 sets of item shortcuts.

How many weapons can I focus on in one playthrough? Is two max?

How is the Kusarigama? I immediately picked that as my first weapon because of how unique it seemed, but I'm wondering if I might be making the game harder for myself. The first two bosses (not counting the prologue) have really kicked my ass and I typically have to pull out Living Weapon for anything big.

All Yokai have a glowing weak spot. Break it to drain their ki, then you can stunlock them and fuck their shit up.

Alternatively, throw salt on them to drain their ki.

that's your hitpoints. if you get hit too often by bad guys you lose the game. i'd start by avoiding being hit in order to mitigate this damage.
