Sidonia lends itself to a lot of game types. You can have an X-COM base-management/turn-based-battle combo, or replace the turn based battles with action mech battles. Like you said, you have to manage your floating colony, develop new technologies as the enemy evolves, go after resources, deal with internal politics of various factions, etc. You don't even have to use story's ship either, you can make a whole new ship and go from there.

Just don't give the player the GBE and you're safe. Limit the setting to one floor, you're some normal human explorer like the Fishermen from the manga/movie and have to keep your village safe, so you go exploroing for sources of food, fight off Safeguard and Silicon Life and whatever else there is, find blue prints for equipment and/or advanced stuff that lets you progress further, meet interesting character etc.

Basically, go for the feel of Dark Souls with the interconnected world and the dark ambiance, but make the focus on ranged combat, or, since guns are a thing, allow the player to choose how they'd style themselves.

That's what you might get out of watching just the anime. I'm not an authority, having just read a good chunk of the manga off and on but none of the light novel, but I think this is the gist of it. Essentially, the more you move away from the light novel- first to manga, then anime- the more unrepentantly callous Tanya gets and the less internal monologue laying out her/his utilitarian rationalist reasoning behind his actions, and the less you are made privy to previous world knowledge receiving current world application. And you get that stupid lip thing in the anime. Salaryman was an explicit history nut or at least historically well-read, and learned to shoot & cast in the new world. The extreme magical power s/he has- along with the little pocket watch sized technomagic thing used to channel it, made with experimental and unviable technology patched over with divine intervention- were provided in ironic mockery of his extreme materialist fedora tipping, to the point of denying God's existence to his face. Because how best to spite a rule-adoring pseudo-libertarian materialist than plant him into an interwar mish-mash of both World Wars combined, with magic use & rank jingoism cranked up til the dials break? Ignorance and strife is the only reason for worship salaryman could conceive of, after all. He gets to be in the armed forces of a gigantic Germany+Austria-Hungary monster blob with zero allies and enemies on all sides to rub salt in the wound.

On that note, God/Being X changes from adaptation to adaptation in terms of tone & motivation. In the light novel, he's an overworked, unappreciated bureaucrat displeased with the weight of running the universe, doing what he does in a huff. In the manga, he's a Zeus analogue (with a universal-mythology pantheon that are probably just sockpuppets) in the form of a humanized jackass and general fickle bitch and does what he does because fuck you, worship me. In the anime, he's a spooky, inhuman world architect that is inhumanly calm, puppeteers human beings & corpses in timestop (and a nutcracker in a dream) to act as his mouthpieces, and is several shades more malicious and coldly mocking than he already was, in addition to seeming to have a faulty understanding of why one might not want to worship him rather than merely being pissy about it, like a dumb AI of great sophistication that is ultimately still a dumb AI.

Overall, the anime was okay, but irked me at various points. The manga was a bit better in terms of both composition, less plot & character derailing from the original, and less bland visual style, but the quality of the scanlations that I read varied heavily and got worse as I went on, not sure if they've improved/been replaced by now. If you're good with nipponese, you can sidestep that, of course.

The fun part about that is that in extra-canonical material like Gihren's Greed, if Gihren decides not to go overboard with terror and keeps a totally positive Law score, then the Earth Sphere and the Colonies are led into a golden age of progress under dictatorial rule thanks to super-genius IQ and him keeping his shit together. The only thing holding Zeon back from pure good guy status is inconsistent acts of comedic, half-calculated malevolence outside the rational by Gihren and a few others in the original series (and the One Year War era followups) and Char being a huge dickhead at all times. And the emulations of these actions & characters in following Universal Century projects, often under quite understandable circumstances, nevermind those of the original.

This being if one considers that the two prime acts, the first Colony Drops and Gihrens' patricide, were not wholly necessary to get as far as they did as may well be the case, considering the hazy possibilities behind a 'clean' Colony Drop with no nerve gas and evacuation & occupation of civilians into other colonies after a rushing street fight with the garrisons, and the fact that Degwin's peace may have destroyed Zeon in the long run with some kind of continuation war on bad footing resulting, though Neo-Zeon's successes even with Side 3 rendered as a half-infiltrated puppet state and the OTL peace without occupation potentially suggests otherwise.

Still, potentially all Gihren had to do to win the war clean morally & militarily was hold off on killing three billion (dirty Federation apologist) people as an expedience, and force through or have someone force through M'Quve's United Maintenance Plan so their procurement wasn't a hilarious totally unstandardized mess of uncentralized war profiteering & politicking and instead a reasonable series of telescoping, improving developments under state auspices as produced by nominally competing yet when necessary forcibly cooperating conglomerates. The Federation leadership body continuing to be irredeemable cunts with those opposing them from within being naive failures that let them revolving door their way right back in ends up justifying any extreme action by Zeon in the OYW anyways.

It isn't like people were unsympathetic to them, and certain elements of the Federation did not handle the war in a way that would win over hearts and minds. What seems really interesting to me is that, at least judging by playthroughs on Youtube, the N64 NGE game really anticipated a lot of the "cinematic" design that dominates videogaming now. This may not have been as grueling as it might sound considering the near-success of Operation Rubicon in destroying Gundam ALEX with only a four-man MS team successfully sneaking into neutral Side 6, far leaner stuff than the Zeon regular army & navy taking early war colonies in full force and the near total ineffectuality of Federation forces on all fronts until the arrival of the GM. What can partisans & EFF reservists do to Mobile Suits & tanks? Even the professional infantry, for that matter. They certainly won't acquit themselves any better than the EFF navy did at Loum or elsewhere.

But if all does not go well, taking the Federation-aligned Sides by boot rather than gassing or flattening them might be a crucial speedbump- either in time spent clearing them, or indirectly in manpower that may be needed to police these colonies shifting other time tables backwards- that sees Zeon stall out early, in spite of this vaunted popular support 'hearts and minds' might give them. Then again, if Zeon stalls out in space and thereafter focuses on acquiring control of it, the ability of the Earth Federation to acquire and develop MS might be hampered compared to recovering them on Earth, and the shifted focus towards occupying colonies, utilizing sympathetic manpower from them, and cutting off resource shipments to Earth (which won't do much considering Jaburo's stockpiles, but is better than nothing) before engaging in a far better-ordered colony drop & Earth Drop Operation.

The question lay in whether Zeon can scrape together enough resources from around the Earth Sphere without dropping onto Earth itself to keep fencing with EFF naval forces. Or else, to stall until the resource shipments arrive from Axis and breathe immense life into Zeon's war economy, on a similar level to the EFF's comeback at Odessa and thereafter. Except with less massive, suicidal charges by tanks & GMs supported by land battleships, and more Zaku II Kai & Gelgoog Jaeger spam.

But it nonetheless showcases that Zeonic mobile suits, mundane grunt & semi-ace limited production models, in very small numbers and with the caveat of dealing with a full armor improved Gundam, plus zero support and botched infiltration, can do just fine running riot over any other colonial forces. The Riah colonial defense suits were useless, and Federation defense forces in the OTL gassed colonies will be even worse off, with ground pounders and possibly heavily restricted tanks to work with but no better. Hence, I recognize there's an argument to be made for a 'clean' early war prosecuted by Zeon not necessarily crippling them, using the best citation available of 'good' results in possibly the worst conditions as a baseline, and said worst-case baseline still resulting in a pyrrhic victory. But, then again, that kind of Side-hopping strategy might just result in all the contested Sides turning into little Thunderbolt Sectors. Hence my skepticism.

Blind luck saved the Alex first for that matter, since Mikhail drunkenly gawked as the Chobham armor fell off rather than going in to finish the job with the beam saber immediately, or else healthily apply the last of the mine-chain to the head and knock out its primary sensor bank (though far from the only, since as I recall MS generally have unnoted secondary all-around camera ports on the limbs & body even going back to the Zaku even though they don't come within a mile of panoramic cockpits systems) to blind it first.

It's a bit odd how Gihren's Greed has sort of a gimpy Zeon victory timeline. After the One Year War, a lot of choices dry up and you end up railroaded into fighting through a semi shot-for-shot version of Zeta & Double Zeta Gundam, except the victorious Principality is fighting both Axis and the Titans because reasons. Then there's most of the bonus scenarios, which have interesting premises but no actual events, just a slugfest conquest.

You say that, but it's not nearly as bad as it sounds. It was a Zaku II Kai, the Rolls-Royce of the OYW Zaku family. Its generator output is inferior to the Gelgoog meaning no beam weapons and it doesn't have a blindingly fast 180 km/h ground speed, only coming out at a reasonably improved 103 km/h over the base Zaku II's 88 km/h, but it otherwise has 30% more thrust than the baseline MS-14A Gelgoog, 27% more acceleration, vastly more weight efficient ceramic armor, a 180 degree turn time only .1 second slower, and was only 1.2 tons heavier at full load while being 1.7 meters shorter in profile. This is comparing to the same Gelgoog which was generally held as better in every way than the original Gundam except for the fact that it didn't use bullshit strong Luna Titanium armor, which frankly is more a blessing than a curse as it allowed the Gelgoog to become a mass production model hampered only by desperate manpower shortages & training deficits in the late war; it was intended to be the next-generation Zaku, after all. The Zaku II Kai was an absolute monster in a mass production budget package, unfortunately coming too late to make an impact thanks once again to the United Maintenance Plan getting repeatedly sidelined thanks to Dozle & Kycillia's rivalry extending to the latters' subordinate M'Quve, the architect of the UMP, until the very end of the war when it was finally pushed through. It wasn't just luck that delivered Bernie, nor his skills as a pilot, but having a really good budget Gelgoog helping even the odds against the ridiculous performance of the Alex.

I don't think it's the only one. Giving it some thought, the problem with diverging so early as to have a Zeonic victory in the OYW is that you have created an entire alternate timeline rather than a vanilla timeline plus divergences. Playing Feds, you go through more or less the same everything as the original series with options to be more or less of a bunch of dicks as in OTL, to exploit or push through certain projects earlier or ignore them, to try and get good ends for characters that god bad ones, so on. Lots to work with. The divergence points are easy and manifold.

With Zeon, if they don't do the lazy thing they did and essentially force all of the events of Zeta onwards to occur exactly as they originally did with less nuance and not dodgy but no reasoning at all, it means they'd have to write an entirely new alternate universe fiction just for Zeon players after the OYW decisions run out and they don't have easy divergences to work with anymore. Which they frankly probably didn't and don't have the budget for, or the time & prestige to consult with Tomino on the matter, or the writers to do it if they could afford it.

The Gundam wikia contains varyingly but generally well-detailed specification readouts on the right hand sidebar, which are themselves taken from Gundam Mechanics books or model kits, usually with scans of the relevant pages in the gallery. But those are all in moonrunes, and I'm a tertiary who hasn't really taken the time to get invested into Gundam beyond a couple games and fawning over the glut of technical information on suits & the general timeline, so I couldn't tell you where to get translated scans, if any great number even exist; consult /m/ if they yet live, they could probably help. mahq.net is also a good source for the pure technical information, as it's a lot more spartan than the Gundam wiki, with just modest general history notes and the pure technical info you'd find in the Gundam Wiki sidebar, but far more compact, less page stretching.
