If you're looking for a longer experience, I recommend the "The Crooked Man/ The Sandman/ The Boogie Man/ The Hanged Man" series.
The sandman doesn't really fit in because it has a much more comical nature than the other three titles, but they're nonetheless good fun for free stuff. Just make sure to avoid the version with the English audio lines if you pick up the Hanged Man. Kills the atmosphere faster than a tactical nuclear warhead.
As for the three: I recommend Ib. The Witch's house can be frustrating because much of it is trial and error, and the same goes for Ao Oni to a lesser extend.

Your workbench doubles as a place to store your items. The saw out back does too, it's a good place to put your logs/planks/nails. The plank is a good weapon but you want either a shovel or sickle for the Silent Forest. If you're going into the Old Woods with a plank you have fucked up. Middle mouse button is very useful for most weapons, giving you a quick attack in case you get backed up into a corner.
Chain traps suck, use bear traps instead. Placing gasoline on a bear trap and lighting it with a match will roast anything you've caught. Don't place traps anywhere you walk often. You may think you're being clever till you panic and get snagged giving the thing chasing you an easy kill. Don't bother barricading your entire house, it's a waste of items and they are getting in anyway.
Light gameplay spoilers below in case you want to go in completely blind.
The generator seems useful at first, but many people don't realize it draws more enemies because of the noise and light. A lantern with some flares on hand will give you a lower profile at night while keeping you prepared for anything. The gasoline you save will also be useful for making more lanterns and molotovs
Barricading yourself in a room only works for so long. Certain events and enemies become very deadly if you are locked in a tight room with no way out. Instead of being defensive, start actively defending your house. You'll become a better fighter and learn how to deal with the different enemies. Always keep a safe room to retreat to in case your shit gets rekted though

Just like every other area, loot Dry Meadow completely before moving on. You can make a plank work in Silent Forest if your timing is ok. Don't be afraid to move on even if you haven't found another weapon. If you can't find another weapon, you can trade wolfman for toolboxes for your workbench to make one yourself. Upgrades carry over to other hideouts so you don't have start from scratch once you reach hideout 2

not that guy, but 1, 2 and 3 are excellent. 1 is simple and unrefined but if you've never played the series before it's a perfect starting point. a lot of people think 2 is the best one and i agree; it's scary as fuck, has a great setting, the story is interesting and there are some really great mechanics at play. the third isn't perfect but it's actually my favorite. the setting is totally awesome, and some of the new ghosts are really, really scary (there's one that actually scared me so bad that i threw the controller and yelled the only word that came to mind, which was CUNT)

Just take as many breaks as you need, but don't be afraid to face your fears. Honestly, most of the scary shit is just in your head, the game usually can't make it nearly as scary. When I first ran into the floating bitch in Cry of Fear, I instantly turned the fucking game off. Took a small break, then went back in and forced myself to stand there and watch how it kills you. Then after seeing it, they weren't that scary, and I could play the game a lot easier. I think that's what makes subtle horror games better than most jumpscare shit. It only leaves room for your mind to make the scare more terrifying than it ever could of been if they told you what to be scared of.
