You also have to take into account the fact everything Arkane has made under Bethesda has been a flop, and I sincerely doubt TNO made all that much money. It likely covered the production costs and added a little on top. I have no idea how well Evil Within and the sequel are selling, but considering the fact they're horror games they can't have been all that profitable. Bethesda is doing a stellar job of mismanaging their publishing efforts.

He just saw that the medium was capable of doing something different than the usual, and followed through on it. Do these niggas ever read books? The closest thing to actual narrative "novelesque" story I've found in videogames was in Max Payne 1. That's a game in which 1. the game is good 2. the narrative actually exists because you can't go through a couple action scenes without a good dialogue, max's first person perspective commentary, comic book narratives in between levels, etc. etc. or maybe you could go with GTA games in terms of narrative(even though it's more ridiculous and juvenile you can't deny that there is a narrative in GTA games)

Games like FPS should never ever sell themselves on narrative alone it's just a recipe for disaster. Narrative driven games were all the rage during the early ps2 era….
