Face it, accept it. It's the future of Home desktop OS.

Whai do i want to use clone kernelled, retarded os anyways...

Written by the same people with the same ideas ≠ built on top of

And while I'd never suggest they didn't know what they were doing, because they clearly did, their ideas were absolutely terrible and have not aged well.

But they have a cool logo.

>Apple flag

>being retarded

yup, checks out

Windows NT is not built on OpenVMS, it's built on a microkernel (ntoskrnl.exe) that was actually inspired by the Mach kernel

>NT

>microkernel

You mean the kernel that handles the GUI? Right, a microkernel. Only assblasted pajeets can repeat this joke; Linux with everything as a module is even more a "microkernel" than this retarded shit.

 No.997208>>997333

Actually microkernels are the future but alright skid

Sage

 No.997209>>997355

>>997202

You're right it's not a microkernel.. but it doesn't have anything to do with the GUI. The nt kernel itself has a different API (which is rarely called.

Win32/64 subsystem (which runs the GUI) is just another personality on top of that. The OS itself is capable of these multiple personalities (DOS/POSIX/OS/2, etc).

 No.997333>>997364

>>997208

What do you see as the benefit of a microkernel over, for example, Plan 9's monolithic kernel which is much smaller than your average microkernel.

 No.997355>>997654

>>997209

I'm reasonably sure at least the scrollbar code lives in kernel mode, I'm not joking.

 No.997364

>>997333

Self-healing systems. A crashed or hanged driver can be restarted automatically and safely without harming the rest of the system. This is much harder to do for individual drivers embedded within a monolithic kernel.

 No.997654>>997838

>>997355

Double checked, most of the UI actually lived in kernel mode at least as far back as xp.

 No.997838>>997869 >>997888

>>997654

NT kernel (ntoskrnl.exe) doesn't run the GUI. Or any high level Windows processes. That would be "smss.exe, and in turn "win32k.dll".

http://pasotech.altervista.org/windows_internals/Win32KSYS.pdf

You could technically run NT's kernel without running Windows itself. It has it's own API.

 No.997869>>997873

>>997838

Looks like a clusterfuck, truth be told.

Could be understood, but less internalized.

 No.997873

>>997869

Kind of the nature of these "hybrid" kernels, I guess. Subsystems are structured like "microkernel servers", but still run in kernel space. Like a microkernel design, but none of the stability benefits. Not sure what the point is really.

But I play games.. so it's cool with me for now.

 No.997888

>>997838

You don't know what you are talking about, you are conflating the executive with the rest of the kernel (aka all the rest of the shit that lives in kernel mode). Not even going to comment on how wrong you are about "technically running" the NT kernel without the rest of the shitheap, in practice the os/2 and posix subsystems required the windows one anyway. Also, here is a real reference.
