A lot of us program an the vast majority of us use a real QWERTY keyboard.

How should someone looking to type better and/or faster go about accomplishing that goal?

Is it worth it for a self-taught typist to retrain their fingers with some online course like goodtyping.com or a program like Maven?

Switch to DVORAK. Once you get used to it you'll never want to go back.

>Switch to DVORAK meme

>emacs type movements not too bad

>muh gaymz need to be rebound (if they can be)

>vi movements COMPLETELY btfo

>type super slow for a good while

>get used to it

>type a little faster than previously because of practice

>type on someone elses system

>fingers are constantly tangled

>haughtily complain about qwerty

>look like an know-it-all idiot anyway

>should have just practiced qwerty to begin with

Dvorak was invented in the 1930s. Algorithms have been used to find more effective layouts since them. The most popular is Colemak, which keeps a lot of the letter positions of QWERTY so that it decreases learning time, keeps the same shortcuts fingerings (CTRL+Z, CTRL+C, CTRL+V, etc)., and allows faster typing than Dvorak.

Use Workman. It's like Colemak but better. Right now I'm at ~90 WPM compared to my ~115 QWERTY. Keep in mind I've only used this for a couple months and QWERTY for my whole life.

I'll agree that both Dvorak and Colemack are objectively better but there's still the problem of the ubiquity of the qwerty layout.

Play typing of the dead.

Are you someone's secretary? Do you have some kind of quota you need to meet? If not, the answer is "no".

Don't worry, nobody actually uses them, they're just pretending.
