you can use a web backend for any kind of frontend of client as long as you develop a REST API for it

then you can have a native Android or iOS app instead of just web, and I'm not talking about wrapper stuff that makes web apps into pseudo-native

Worse than RPC because web frontends aren't made to be easily automated. With a properly made RPC, you can use CLI, TUI and GUI clients easily.

Another bonus of this approach is that you don't have to run a fucking web server.

FreeNAS is meant to be controlled entirely by web browser. You can run a terminal in browser. If you need more than terminal access, you probably wont stray from Windows anyway so it doesn't matter what you think.
