As I kid I fucking loved technology, it was always improving and we were seeing massive leaps in what machines were capable of doing. We went from the Atari 2600 all the way up to the PS2 and then everything just seemed to stagnate. Technology no longer improved as much as it just sort of polished things a bit better.
This even happened with the internet where we kept seeing improvements and new ways to use it until we hit social media and immediately it all stagnated and turned to shit on the spot. Instead of having cool games to play on it the internet is now watching someone else replay the same old game over and over or seeing some cam whore play the latest bland as fuck skinner box.
It went from being an exciting thing to explore and see all these awesome new websites to asking myself which company I want to spy on me for an hour. I have super high speed internet and can download a gig in less than 60 seconds... and then the only porn being offered is trannies, interracial or cuckolding. What's even the point of that?
I understand as people get older they start to see newer tech as something they can't understand but that isn't the problem here. It's not that the tech is not understandable, it's that it's devoid of any soul or purpose. There's no excitement, nothing new and interesting. The most interesting thing I've found lately is Neocities which is little more than a Geocities parody. It's so bad that parodying the bad stuff is now one of the exceptional highs.
Any one else just grown to utterly despise technology but it's so inbuilt into who they are there's no real way to disconnect from it without completely restructuring their lives?

> yfw you realize that "The Cloud" is just Mainframes rebranded.
We have ideas as a society. Cool thoughts, dreams, fantasies. One thing that you have to realize about the time you came of age is that much of the "advances" happening were hardware finally coming to be capable of things that people had imagined for it. Tablets were invented in the 1950s and 60s by science fiction authors, sixty years later Furer Jobs finally released hardware that could perform what those authors envisioned and not die in two hours. The professor at my local university who is hands-down their integrating-computers-into-society guy got his PhD writing a ray tracer on a minicomputer. We've ran out of relevant cool ideas dreamed up by PhD candidates and SciFi authors over the last century, and are now on our own. Either we've already made the hardware do it, or it's beyond the capabilities of hardware for the foreseeable future.
You are jilted because you lived at just the right time to see this apparent technological bloom, as the technology filled the visions of what it could do, and then saw things stagnate as technology hit the limitations on what it could actually accomplish. Now we are only left with visions of the future that computers cannot perform.

I'm actually in the same boat as OP. I LOVED technology growing up, and seeing the explosion of tech in the 90s and early 00s was amazing. It was like another space race.
Everyone involved with tech was doing it because they loved it. People in their garages just soldering shit together, coding day and night, working for something they were passionate about.
But now.... now it's all changed. Now it isn't about passion. It isn't about doing what you love. It's all about pandering to whatever bullshit faggot demographic is complaining the loudest. The tech isn't "by us for us," it's "by them for no one."
My whole life is tech. I grew up with it. It molded me into the person I am today and my entire career, but I can't fucking stand all this facebook, twitter, snapchat bullshit. It's not that I don't understand, it's that I loathe it.
I hate that no one understands it.
I hate that everyone complains about it.
I hate that worthless cunts control things containing large amounts of data and twist it to fit their way of thinking instead of telling the truth.
I hate that the strides technology has made is treated so poorly by the masses.
I hate that media has turned into a 24 hour cycle of shit.
I hate that there is such a wealth of information out there to consume, but the masses use it to post pictures of their dicks and tits.

In the past when you bought a computer or software you bought a product. Sure, there was usually a catalogue included with other stuff you could buy, but that was just some harmless extra you could ignore (I actually quite like looking at old software catalogues that came with games).
Today when you buy something, or more likely today when you sign up for something the product is secondary, it's only a carrier for the advertising to buy even more shit. Bought a new game? Buy our DLC, season pass and lootcrates. Bought a new phone? Sign up for our services, buy more apps, use apps with ads that want you to buy other shit. Buy shit inside the apps. Bought a new PC? I've grown to hate it too. And it's a pretty simple reason why. Technology used to be about improving life and making the world better. Technology would come out and make your own life easier. No more thumbing through books, just search. Talk with people all over the world like you never could before. Create things you never thought possible.
Today, internet is a race to see who can give people the biggest dopamine rush via likes, tweeks, favorites, and hive-mind bullshit, all controlled by a few massive companies that have locked out any competition what so ever.
The purpose of the internet and computers have changed. They are now about spying on you and making you feel like you're accomplishing something by making stupid as fuck posts and having friends and random people like, upvote, favorite, etc your stupid shit. They've been turned evil by evil people.

This particular part of your rant can be applied to so many other things these days, people seem to think that the way we live will last forever or that 60 years of feminism will outsmart 10k years of evolution. I hate that way to think, the I am the smartest person in the room, people in the past were bigots if I would have been there I would have totally been different even though I believe people are a product of their environment, and people in the future will look up to me because I'm on the right side of history. These morons always think they're the best thing that even happened and when they're together, they always try to outdo each other with whatever they perceive to be the smart and enlightened thing to do even if it's fundamentally retarded, and if you're facing an "enemy" and you don't have any argument, make an hamster face and look at your "allies" for approval while telling us which year we're in.

Im right there with you, anon. My biggest issue is the steady maneuvering of tech towards a cloud-based, license based, "smart" everything system. As wireless internet speeds match and surpass HDD transfer speeds, you're going to see all physical storage disappear from consumer tech, and all software, including the OS, will be hosted on a corporate server. Consumer computers will become glorified tablets running VMs that have to be connected to the internet to work at all, and all of "your" files and software will be accessed remotely. It's the wet-dream end goal for total corporate and state control and surveillance of technology usage. You think I'm being dramatic? Go look up Chromebooks.

We're about to figure out fusion and it's been a long fucking time coming.
Power efficiency of batteries and such are still not at 100%.
Cybernetic prosthetics are still affected by biological rejection.
Even with the myriad of satellites in orbit, you can still lose signal on your phone.

I'll often see the people here say things like "How do normalfags accept Steam DRM without at least baring their teeth?" -- because to them, it isn't DRM. They think they actually "own" those bits. I'll explain once and for all: Yeah, we live in a world where there is no progress, thus everything only can go degenerate.
Now, that's not why you shouldn't do anything, nor saying what you're saying.
So, even though it's the truth, you should not tell that, for the simple reason that it serves their interests, and because our ancestors did not stop making children/fight while knowing this truth.
Moreover, the degeneracy happens at a global scale; but you still can maintain yourself at a local one. That's why fighting IS important, because that's literally for the survival of your own ideas, not for the world, but for yourself. It's possible to do. They'll never be able to destroy all island. The goal is to create one, to maintain one and to bring as much people in the right on it as you can.
Going against the machine is extremly noble, because that's a lost cause, that'll cost your everything. That's the best of us, that do that. Now, at our little level, the goal is to maintain yourself and your family up, or if you're enough lucky to have one, your community.
I don't know if you're saying that blindly, without any depth, and/or if it's because you're tired of faggots coming out of college thinking that with petitions, or controlled and authorized by the government protests, they'll change anything. On that last point, I totally agree, that's the wrong methods, following retarded ideologies. But I feel that you're saying that without depth, and just to content yourself for not doing anything. Because there's a huge amount of retarded people working in /tech/ that give this as an excuse to use facebook, their smartphone, all the tech, saying that since you can't escape, then let's embrace it.
I'm sorry but again, material is not important. The life in itself is not important. But I'm not gonna try to convince a secular money loving american about the absolute importance of spirituality and honor.

<inb4 "but iiii don't like any of those things, you don't understaaaand how much better everything was 20 years ago!"
Here let me list a few
20 years ago I played jazz jackrabbit on dos on a CRT. it had some simple subtle features such as
-vsync
-no motion blur because CRTs got none
Then 10 years ago i somehow lost my CRT and got stuck with a top of the line 2009 LCD (which was soon replaced with a top of the line 2012 LCD). Now when I played jazz jackrabbit or any 2D platformer, it felt unplayable. I could never put my finger on it because there were so many visual artifacts that I couldn't understand what was caused by the hardware, the monitor, or my eyes, so i just took it for granted. Then recently i figured out if i just use a CRT and turn on vsync it will look absolutely perfect. The status quo right now is to play with motion blur and vsync off (or finally, gsync which is another disaster lol). And all these "indie" and "retro" games coming out are designed to play on shitty LCDs (but they still turn to shit once the image starts moving). Aside from hardware problems, I've yet to see a single "indie"/"retro" game that looks anything near on the quality of something from the super mario era. a year ago i looked through all the indie games trying to find a modern platformer becuase I'm designing a platformer myself and want to see the competition, but I found not a single modern game with good graphics aside from Momodora RUTM and cuphead (which wasn't that great)
Back on the topic of vsync, almost no image viewer has it. I just wrote one a few days ago with beam racing (removes 16ms of input latency) vsync and there's no comparison. Feh, windows' viewer, sxiv, faststone are all completely inferior for panning images to this software I wrote in a day (I'm not interested and haven't tested other software such as gthumb that has hamburger menus and takes a day to start up to view a single image). When you pan an image in my program on a CRT, you can see 100% of the image detail. Doing it on an LCD will make you have to pause panning for a second every time you want to see what's there. Doing it with feh on a CRT will cause tearing, double image artifacts, judder, and more.
Now back to LCDs. Even just looking at the LCD industry, the quality has degraded in several ways from the early 2000s LCDs:
-Menus take several seconds to open
-Resolutions/refresh take several seconds to switch between (I suspect this is partially due to HDCP fucking up the firmware/microprocessor). You cannot even see the POST screen when your computer boots because it takes too long for the monitor to turn on
-Menus are buggy as fuck. Look at any old Dell (e.g 1905FP, 1706FP, e176FP) for example and there's no comparison. Newer LCD technology is completely and utterly fucked on the microprocessor side, just like all new embedded crap. An example would be the disaster that is home routers (WPS, web vulnerabilities, etc).
Websites: You can only realistically have a few tabs open in a non-modded web browser or else your system will slow down (it doesn't matter how fast you think your system is. it can only be _so_ fast). Solution is to disable JS of course. Actually I'm too tired to give a shit about websites right now
Vehicles: Now have 100KLOC firmware in them. Result: They have RCE vulns that allow you to control someone's car by connecting to it's mobile IP address and exploiting the servers on it, jumping from the shitty "smart" web software to the ECU. Other results: cars crash more often for no reason due to software bugs. upcoming: even buggier "self-driving" cars with 100x the vulnerabilities.

The biggest killer is cancer. The worst diseases in term of money are chronic diseases. Yet they can't cure it. The truth is that chronic disease is the best for big pharma. Chronic disease is with vaccines and over use of medicament why Big Pharma is the second biggest industry after computing in the world.

Guitar exists since very long time, so I don't understand why you're talking about that. The current evolution of music is from my point of view, incredibly chaotic (post rock for example). It represents the current monstrous existential crisis, and the "true state" of our world, right now. So I don't know how I should judge that. Cancer is an in"curable" meme compared Type 1 Diabetes which should be completely curable given a few decades of proper research, with Cancer you only have to take presciption meds for some 5 years assuming you survived the chemo whereas a chronic disease can and is guaranteed kill you in a day or two without taking meds.
Heck there are already proven methods at predicting&preventing Diabeetus from materializing in people with a genetic disposition but for some reason they've yet to be implemented outside of studies.
Funny enough the above still employs regular medication, but from what I remember it's only a pill you swallow every day or so combined with frequent medical checkups which pales in comparison to full-on Insulin therapy.

Music is a propaganda tool. Ever since man started to sing to his children to warn them of the dangers in the world it's been used this way. You can judge the state of a society by it's propaganda and how it effects the people.
That concert bombing is a good example. No one cared this brown whore was singing about riding "dick bicycles" to their 10 year old little girls. But they cared about someone exploding near them for all of a week when it allowed them to get a free better concert.

For some reason (hmm I wonder why that might be) all the Gaymer shit has unbelievably terrible GUIs. (((They))) are rushing the deployment of 5G. Why? Why is pushed nearly a matter of national interest everywhere?
It's simple: it'll be the frame for surveillance technology based on IoT. They're planning to connect everything, and the high bandwidth required to connect every device will be this 5G.
This is the next level of mass surveillance.

>100k LOC
Lolno it's much better than that.
According to wikipedia on the subject of car software :
>On Feb. 8, 2010 the NHTSA and NASA concluded the electronics were not to blame after reviewing the electronics and electromagnetic interference. The finding was based on studying over 280,000 lines of software coding on nine vehicles involved in earlier sudden acceleration incidents.[201] And studying the throttle systems at NASA's Langley Research Center and Chrysler's Auburn Hills headquarters.[29]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009%E2%80%9311_Toyota_vehicle_recalls#Electronic_throttle_control_system
280k LOC ran in 2010 in the safe Proc of a car. Now we are almost 10 years later and the kind of programmer that led to such disasters are running around, perhaps even more frequently, especially given the shortage of such workforce in some countries. (EU and Switzeland in particular). It is more than a possibility that very important design decisions will be taken by non experienced rookies.
The bonus is that is the safe proc (generally a dual Proc system that sync with each other for important decisions). It will not control a GUI or the web connections to the home server.
For that there is the "non safe part". Aka an Additional proc that takes care of all that shit. If you hear about some car manufacturers wanting to run containers and other insanities in a car, it will be there.
I do not know how big that code base will be. But i know that everything will be done there that can be even remotely imagined, from on board Bluetooth to video control for the passengers. And it will be coded as if nothing that runs on that system can affect the safe part of the car. That assumptions has already been proved wrong multiple times by the remote control of cars by hackers.
Enjoy your smartcar Anon, you could perhaps get a painless death from it !

In some ways, technology has gotten worse. Some "modern" languages like Java don't even trap on overflow. Doing it wrong has become normal. Technology will only improve when there are new hardware architectures because today's PCs and phones are too complicated for anyone to write an OS from scratch. It never used to be this way, and game consoles held out a lot longer than PCs did. Programs that used fit on a floppy disk now need millions of lines of code plus third-party libraries and 60 million lines of broken bullshit underneath. Linux needs more code for design flaws like panics, OOM killers, and EINTR than Multics and ITS did to do things the right way, not to mention that Multics did much more than Linux and was more secure too.

>The GUI of my 4MHz Symbolics 3620 lisp machine is more responsive on average than that of my 3GHz office PC. The former boots (into a graphical everything-visible-and-modifiable programming environment, the most expressive ever created) faster than the latter boots into its syrupy imponade hell. And this is true in spite of an endless parade of engineering atrocities committed in the name of “speed.”
There are times when I feel that clocks are running faster
but the calendar is running backwards. My first serious
programming was done in Burroughs B6700 Extended Algol. I
got used to the idea that if the hardware can't give you the
right answer, it complains, and your ON OVERFLOW statement
has a chance to do something else. That saved my bacon more
than once.
When I met C, it was obviously pathetic compared with the
_real_ languages I'd used, but heck, it ran on a 16-bit
machine, and it was better than 'as'. When the VAX came
out, I was very pleased: "the interrupt on integer overflow
bit is _just_ what I want". Then I was very disappointed:
"the wretched C system _has_ a signal for integer overflow
but makes sure it never happens even when it ought to".

This guy needs to distinguish between latency and data throughput. Today's computers have far superior data processing throughput and latency. Today's software platforms also have an exponentially greater amount of processing requirements resulting in a computer experience that feels sluggish when compared to the computers of the past. You could install (or otherwise recreate) those ancient software and your computer experience will be the same as the old times. It is very possible to refactor today’s software and software platforms such that it feels super responsive to the inputs given. In addition, the software can be refactored such that it feels much faster to get to business.

I basically felt this way since the mid 90's, when Commodore went out of business, and also Atari ST was gone. I also haven't owned a newer game console than Sega Genesis, because I can't stand the 3D shit everything became. Someone gave me a Nintendo DS gift, but I only run Gameboy/color and GameGear emulators on it.
I didn't think it could get any worse, but then they forced the stupid widescreen shits and made all laptop keyboard crappy, and the hardware got all botnet and buggy. And the web became so much shit that you need gigs of memory to run browser. It's like having a nightmare inside a bad dream.
At this point, I just don't care about new technology at all. Only really old things from early 90's and before are nice.

This second quote is true as fuck. A long time ago I wrote some X11 GUIs in _Haskell_ and even then, they immediately felt massively faster and more responsive than any of your typical modern software such as Gnome, which are typically written in C or C++.

>This guy needs to distinguish between latency and data throughput. Today's computers have far superior data processing throughput and latency.
you mean at a hardware level, right?
>Today's software platforms also have an exponentially greater amount of processing requirements
You'd think that until you write a wrapper around libjpeg and instead of the usual 5-30 second startup time your typical modern software has, it starts up in a few milliseconds, and pans images with 0-16ms input latency instead of the usual 32-1500ms of modern software. I'm assuming you're talking about the requirements for viewing a jpeg as opposed to the requirements for executing a piece of shit jpeg viewer like gthumb.

>too much load on server and client

this most certainly includes fortnite and the other even shittier-coded games like PUBG. in fortnite in 50v50 mode, when you look at the enemy team it's just a slideshow at 1 frame per second because the server is "being efficient" by not sending you more updates. multiplayer game network code has not advanced since the 90s. and why would you think otherwise when we're talking about the industry driven by a bunch of kids with ADHD and OCD

The creative industry is no better than the consumer industry is. This sort of behaviour is universal. I am someone who does create things and I've noticed how much harder it is to get a tool that just works with no bullshit. A lot of computing power is now going to background non-sense rather than the main functional program. And this is baked right into the package, you cannot get around these packages. In some cases the only option for a professional tier product is to license it on a yearly basis. Not "you buy the 2018 version and it's yours for life" but "you rent the software for a year and we'll force you to update it every time we do".

It's only hopeless if you intent to play the game with the rules dictated to you by the modern consumerist environment (as opposed to the old school hobbyist environment from decades ago).
Anyway a lot of other things than just computers/Internet got subverted. Look at cars for example. How does an average guy fix his car nowadays? In the 80's and before, it was easy enough to do most of the work yourself, if you just took some related classes in high school or just helped your dad/uncle/brother fix his car.

Almost nothing large scale is done any more unless it serves global capital. Could it be that we've hit a point where the interests of profit have become higher priority than the advancement of hardware/software? Could it be that with most people owning a smartphone, the market has been captured & now it's just a race to the bottom with an endless amount of useless-but-profitable ideas, endless callbacks to nostalgia, viewed through/played on your new device, profitably resurrected via purchases of the latest iteration?
I would imagine the ratio of ideas implemented to maximize profit vs those that are done to advance things in general are heavily skewed towards profit. Capitalism stagnates development and novelty by screening out everything that is not profitable no matter how useful or helpful it may be.

No shit genius, why don't you start a multi billion dollar business run on fuzzy feelings? Hardware was always about money, a foundry costs billions to build, if you don't care about money you won't deliver shit. Or, even, start a small business but instead of trying to turn a profit try to lose money, let's see how well that brilliant idea works.
>Could it be that we've hit a point where the interests of profit have become higher priority than the advancement of hardware/software?
That was never the point you retard. Better hardware, software or anything really, for the sake of it makes no sense.
>Capitalism stagnates development and novelty by screening out everything that is not profitable no matter how useful or helpful it may be.
In your imagination maybe. Out here useful and helpful things have value so companies develop and sell them to make money. You're free to build all those theoretical useful and helpful things that are unprofitable and give it away at a loss to yourself, what prevents you from doing so isn't capitalism but common sense.

I don't understand how Diablo 2 is meant to be run. It runs at 25 FPS for me. It's just a blur fest. To enjoy any of the scenery you have to actually stop moving your character, or pause the game if you want to see detail of enemies. Going on a CRT removes the blur but since it's 25FPS, you get double vision or worse. How was this game meant to be run? Maybe the issue is I'm running the wrong version or incompatible OS (Windows 7). Back then lots of people still had CRTs, so they would have had the same issue as me. I don't understand how then they could have released this game and not seen anything wrong with it.

>carbs are thirsty
Not necessarily. The increases in power and economy we've seen in newer cars have a lot more to do with computer-aided design processes than they do with computerized injection. The ability to simulate an engine makes it much easier to optimize it before even constructing a prototype. Some carbureted vehicles could get 20-40 MPG. See Hondas from the 1970s, for example.
The problem today is that most of the off-the-shelf carburetors currently available are continuations of the shittiest designs in the past, and usually go on top of engines that are not at all designed for economy. Speaking to burger carbs, Holleys are an inefficient and crude design from the 1950s that are good at going fast and absolutely nothing else. Edelbrock still produces the Carter AFB, which is a carb that OEMs stopped using in 1968 because the shitty weighted secondary air doors were a bad design that couldn't pass emissions testing even then. Edelbrock's higher end AVS is a continuation of the slightly improved design used by OEMs through 1971, but it's still not particularly excellent by any standard. It was a low cost hack to let a fundamentally flawed design limp along for a few more years until the Thermoquad was ready to replace it. It looks to me like their new AVS2 models might actually be pretty good as far as fuel atomization goes due to their redesigned boosters, but I haven't seen any real world data on that yet. Most other new carbs on the market are variations of the basic Holley design (QFT, Demon, etc.) with a higher price tag.
The Quadrajet and it's two barrel cousin the Dualjet were actually pretty efficient especially in the later years, but the Quadrajet in particular usually went on big V8 engines that were designed for either high output power or low measurable emissions levels rather than fuel economy so it never really lived up to its full potential for economy in stock applications. A lot of the 1980s models had electronic mixture feedback control on the primary side on top of an otherwise fully mechanical carburetor, which made them pretty close to a proper EFI system in terms of efficiency.

Anything 1996 and up will be hackable to some extent. If a newer car doesn't have bluetooth or a cellular connection for OnStar, GPS maps, etc. it might be a reasonable calculated risk to drive it, but vehicles that do have any of that should be avoided. I prefer to stick with carbs or early EFI systems, personally, as it completely removes all the guesswork from the equation. These older cars are incapable of interfacing with the botnet at all. In my opinion these vehicles are also much easier to work on due to their simplicity.

The carbs are inherently thirstier by the fact that injection gets cut off if your car can keep going with the momentum., the carb uses the vacuum created by the cylinders to suck fuel, and that vacuum is there all the time.
This means that when going downhill carburated cars use fuel and injected cars don't.
And I would computerize the airbags just for the fact that a misfire costs shitloads of money on interior repairs, they break everything around them to save you from smacking your head into hard stuff.

I know how carbs work.
They still let some fuel in when the butterfly is closed, if you look at them a lot have a small hole drilled to help with idling, and even then you have to adjust the screw that keeps it a little bit open to let the mixture in, otherwise you would stall everytime you wanted to idle, the computer controlled injectors cut off the fuel entirely as long as the car is rolling and on gear, effectively keeping the engine spinning with the momentum of the car (also engine braking), if the revs drop below some threshold it starts injecting again.
The mechanical carburator doesn't have this possibility, it keeps the throttle butterfly open at all times, sucking fuel even if it doesn't need to.
That's why an injected car will consume less fuel, and a lot less if you know how to exploit that.

I will concede that EFI does have the ability to completely cut fuel flow when such behavior is desirable. In theory it should be possible to do the same thing by abusing an idle stop solenoid to completely close the throttle plates when coasting, though this has never actually been done to my knowledge. If we're avoiding computer control, the obvious way to manage this would be clicking the solenoid off when the throttle is fully disengaged and engine vacuum rises above a certain threshold that is not seen at idle, probably around 20-25 inHg depending on the engine.
This is all hypothetical, of course. Implementing such a system would require tracking down a few obscure parts, fabricating what isn't available and possibly also modifying the carburetor's idle circuit depending on how it was designed. It's probably more trouble than it's worth.

Ok. There's moe to it than that. Most of those types of supercarbs use heating to thermally catalytically crack the fuel, esentially working as an on board reformer. Just vaporizing the fuel like you're saying gives only a modest boost due to fractionating the hydrocarbon blend that is gasoline.
In modern engines, the injected fuel is sprayed into the back of the hot intake valve, then it is adiabatically compressed, further heating and vaporizing it. That's why engine knock is a thing. I've been obsess with supercarbs since I was a kid. It's one of the first things I discovered when I first started using the internet back in the day. The secret to all of them is the cracking. The Pogue carburetor, the Ogle carburetor, all of them. When they hot hydrocarbons come into contact with the right metals they are catalytically broken down into simpler compounds like methanol, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen. This is where these carburetors get their efficiency. Fuel additives tend to not break down well, and slowly coat and poison the catalyst over time. That's why you so often hear stories of the devices not working after awhile, and why they never pass EPA tests. They EPA just puts some extra catalyst killing additives in the test fuel, and suddenly the device doesn't work so well. If you decide to experiment with a supercarb, make sure to use something like coleman fuel, which has no additives to poison your catalyst.
IMHO one of the best ones was the MIT plasma fuel reformer. It used a gliding arc plasma instead of a metal catalyst to break down the fuel. The electricity could easily break down the additives.

Hydrogen is better but carbon is far from useless. They can and do run engines on pretty much pure carbon. There are several techniques, from using slurry fuels in place of diesel to gasification. Just about any technique used with coke can be done with charcoal. In world war II the swedes used gasifiers to run their cars on wood and charcoal. Charcoal gasifiers are extremely simple. They generate carbon monoxide with is burnt in a gasoline engine instead of gasoline. Wood gasifiers are more complicated, and can make nasty tar like byproducts, but don't require you to make the wood into charcoal first.

Please tell me you're just baiting and that you're not this fucking retarded/
Carbon is quite flammable, and actually stores more energy than hydrogen. Just do a search for "graphite fire" if you don't believe me. Carbon monoxide is an excellent fuel. It burns cleanly resulting in CO2. If the carbon is from a renewable source there is no harm to the environment, as it is carbon neutral.
Charcoal is almost entirely carbon, and charcoal gasifiers are extremely easy to make. They just partially burn carbon to CO, and in the engine this is burnt to CO2. Is is an extremely clean gas, and requires little or no filtering to give an extremely clean burning fuel. You don't get soot or tar from such extremely simple compounds.
As for running engines on wood, those gasifiers are almost always some kind of downdraft gasifiers. A properly made gasifier gets very hot at the combustion zone, cracking the heavy creosote causing compounds. The few that remain are relatively simple to filter out. There are people that have been running vehicles for years on wood without tar issues. These gasifiers output hydrogen, methanol, and carbon monoxide. What Teslonian man is doing is not really full blown gasification, it's just pyrolysis. He's got a simple retort that he isn't getting very hot, of course he's getting all sorts of sludgy long chain molecules out of it. He gets some usable fuel, but most of it is heavy sludgy creosote also known by the trendy term "bio-crude" that needs to be broken down and refined more.
Charcoal can be used for many of the same processes that coal is used for, and almost all of the ones that coke (which like charcoal, is pretty much pure carbon with some ash forming compounds in it) is used for. One that I mentioned earlier is water slurry fuels. Charcoal is finely powdered, mixed with water, and burnt in diesel engines instead of diesel fuel. It's that simple.
