You do realize GDDR5 is just a variant of DDR3 right? Sony put marketing spin on the whole thing to make it seem like a bigger deal than it is. The Playstation 4 is using AMDs unified memory model. There are plenty of AMD laptops capable of 8GBs of RAM.

The PS4 basically has 8GBs of RAM. But most of it is set aside for graphics. While 256MBs of it is allocated to the OS itself

>implying the BSD kernels are any better than Linux

Monolithic kernels are all architecturally flawed in an age where we have hardware powerful enough to run microkernels without any of the major performance hits (as long as they're made right). This is why Google is working on their Fuchsia OS. Many say it's because of liscensing, but they've kept it open source thus far and I'm willing to play devil's advocate. Microkernels will become mainstream and replace monolithic garbage like Linux and BSD kernels, and will completely stomp and shit on hybrid fuckups like NT and XNU.

 No.917971>>917977 >>918030

In theory we can run Windows on the PS4

In practice its not that simple because someone would need to port over a conventional BIOS/UEFI first since Windows expects a lot of standard BIOS interfaces which the PS4 doesn't have. Running Linux is easy because the PS4s platform interface already expects a *nix OS running on top AKA BSD

 No.917977

>>917971

Also we probably can just have a small Linux kernel based hypervisor acting as a stud BIOS between the PS4 proprietary IPL and run Windows on top of that with no overhead whatsoever. It might even be possible right now with no porting effort at all

you know damn well the $300 pricepoint is pitiful on both laptop and desktop performance wise.

sure you can get a thinkpad but your trading performance for reduced botnet.

i enjoy these things the same way i enjoy router's getting hacked. for $300 a playstation 4 could be turned into a powerful thing. good luck paying $300 and playing ps4 games on it. the same way replacing the firmware on a router get's you from minimully useful botnet to extremely useful full linux environment where you can do damn near anything in the confines of the system specifications, kind of like single board computers.

these things should not be shamed, but at the same time you should not go out and purchase proprietary hardware for the sole purpose of installing these hacks on it, as doing so supports proprietary hardware manufacturers. if you already have one or are forced to have one, (you like gaymes and don't want to drop $2k on a gayming machine, then by all means liberate your hardware and spread the information to others.

 No.924952>>924960

>>924920

The PS4 might actually be cheaper that's why I'm wondering.

It uses a pre-ryzen AMD CPU (no IME-tier botnet) with a GPU that doesn't require blobs, so if the bootloader can be free software then the entire thing can be free software.

If that can be done I'd buy a ps4 to put in my living room, install a distro of my choice, connect a controller to the USB port and turn the PS4 into a couch gaming machine. It has a CPU good enough to emulate every 2D console and play some free software games, so I think gaming on the ps4 could be pretty good.

 No.924960>>924964

>>924952

it's not going to emulation an xbox or a wii U or whatever previous gen gaymes you want on it.

it'll emulate nes/snes/sega/n64(maybe). you might well be better off with a thinkpad if you want libre emulation for these platorms.

>play some free software games

 No.924962

>>924938

>you know damn well the $300 pricepoint is pitiful on both laptop and desktop performance wise

Its not

I don't think you realize just how low setting most PS4 multiplats run at. And even then a lot of them can't even reach a target 30 fps. On lower-medium settings. Let that sink in. Even exclusive titles like Bloodborn dip into the low 20 fps quite often. The PS4 is trash price to performance wise

 No.924964

>>924960

I mean free as in freedom, not free as in free beer.

OpenMW

OpenRA

OpenTTD

Wesnoth

I don't think anybody has tried to play video games on a PS4 but if it can be made to run exclusively free software I'd be willing to be the first one.
