The SDF Public Access UNIX Server began as the Super-Dimensional Fortress BBS in 1987. Over time, it evolved into a sort of BBS+.

The SDF server, while not nesasarilly a True VPS, does work primarily as a loan shell. SDF advertises itself as a social networking compunity of computer professionals all through a dedicated network of UNIX machines. SDF has a ulliten board, a Usenet link, a chat program, and more things.

To combat spam, you are surverely limited as a new user, and are expected to donate just $1. There are paid membership levels above this as well that allow for more features.

SDF runs NetBSD, and also has a Plan9 Array. SDF is more BSD-Friendly then GNU/Linux-friendly and is more for Open Source then Free Software.

SDF permits the hosting of small websites on their server, as well as gopherspace. Higher-paying members can get more daemons suhc as ftp.

SDF provides Dial-Up and DSL ISP, as well as having two direct telephone numbers so you may call the shell directly without having an ISP. Connecting to the shell can be done with SSH, Telnet, or Direct-Dial.

I've always wanted to mess around one one of these, but there's not really anything to do on them that i couldn't do on my home machine. Plus the communities on these shell account server seem like they'd be very cliquey
