Can you guys tell me if there is a definitive guide to anything TOR/Dark Net related out there? Also, do you have to be rather tech-affine to get it or is a literal retard able to?

You need to be smart and motivated to understand and learn how it works and make sure you use it correctly.

Besides, there's no such thing as a guide since the technology is still very immature. We're at the stage encryption was in the early 80s, except with no export controls.

Well, I doubt I'm all that tech smart but I sure am motivated. But surely there has to be a manual to get started. Of course I could google that shit myself but I thought I'd ask around here for tried and tested methods.

Browsing the dark web is as easy as installing firefox. If you want to learn anything complex/usefull start by reading AES CBC encryption. salts, hashes and the right encryption tools are the easiest thing to mess up when building applications.

That's a good article. Bonus points for warning against (((Manjaro))), (((MX Linux))) and (((Linux Mint))) (and similar distros), and thanks for providing a link to the Tor Blog post.

What do you want to know?

The recommended, safest, and simplest way to use Tor is to download the latest stable Tor Browser from https://torproject.org. You just unpack it wherever you want and run it. There's no installation. Voila, you're using Tor.

You can just browse the open web as normal, or visit hidden services with ".onion" addresses (the so-called "dark web" [eye-roll])

You can use other browsers and programs through a Tor proxy, but it's not as safe.

If you want to know more about it, go straight to the source. The guy who wrote Tor uses the nick "arma" on the Tor IRC channel, and he's often around and happy to answer questions. Great guy.

Using Tor is incredibly simple for noobs. Even setting up a hidden (.onion) service is easy if you just follow a few simple instructions.

As the other guy said, you will want to understand what kinds of protections Tor can and can not provide. Then you understand how to use it effectively to your best advantage. It's not rocket science.

https://2019.www.torproject.org/about/overview.html.en

Note that you may see a lot of bullshit around about how Tor is "compromised" or "backdoored" by the NSA, etc. etc. That's often just law enforcement or intelligence community shills trying to get people not to use it (because it works), or the morons they've bullshitted into believing them.
