I've been interested in Fidonet for a long time and I'm curious if anyone has attempted to build something similar in recent years. I've always felt like the Fidonet model would apply well to imageboards and it avoids a lot of the issues related to censorship on the current web. I think with encryption it might be a suitable replacement for most existing imageboards and forums on the web.
It'd be nice to have a local client that would download messages and allow you to post while browsing multiple nodes/boards within the network. Nodes/boards could share messages between themselves too and set their own agreements for hosting each other's content.
I know this is a bit of an ideaguy post but I've been thinking about doing a "modern fidonet" project like this for awhile now. I was hoping someone here might be able to point out some obvious flaws in this idea.
