Comparison between Tor and i2p?

What are the differences between just booting up tor browser/entering the network and running i2p?

Are there any imageboards or any random interests websites on i2p or is it dead?

I boot up tor frequently to see how stuff is going and visit a few imageboards, been listening about i2p for a few years but never did any search.

 No.1031418>>1031422 >>1031475

>>1031409 (OP)

i2p is slow and high latency tor is not i2p is also more decentralized than tor that always connects to some hardcoded servers before you get to the network.

 No.1031422

>>1031418

Slower than tor? How slow?

I mean imageboards still mean images but it's not like I'm doing any high loads over the network.

 No.1031428>>1031465 >>1043197

Both projects have different goals and priorities. Tor is built with browsing the clearnet in mind, but its hidden services are an afterthought and it doesn't play nice with P2P. I2P, on the other hand, is built for hidden services and P2P but you can't browse the clearnet without an outproxy.

 No.1031429

>>1031409 (OP)

tor is onion routing. your packet is enclosed by 3 or more additional packets around it.

i2p is what they call garlic routing. your packet is included with a bunch of different packets and sent through the network.

tor is used mostly for connecting to clearnet, while i2p (invisible internet project) attempts to create a surreptitious network within the internet.

 No.1031443>>1031447 >>1031454 >>1031472

No proof-of-work or proof-of-stake is required to create an identity, so none of the networks is anonymous.

nice meme. the identity would only be used to ban people with wrong opinions.

 No.1031454

i2p doesn't claim to be anonymous, but it doesn't matter because both of them leak the IP's bootstrapped and connected in the network.

 No.1031465>>1031475

>>1031428

Last time I used i2p I could directly connect to clearnet websites without having to configure anything. Even TLS connections seemed to be working so outproxies can't (not perfectly sure about this though) perform MITM attacks. I think they enable outproxies by default now.

>i2p is slow

If you've just connected to it, sure. Let it run for some time, and the speed picks up substantially.

>>1031465

false.i2p is a sorta semi-official I2P outproxy (available by default in i2pd), but it just shoves your traffic through Tor, so it goes (You) -> I2P -> Tor -> clearnet.

 No.1031481

 No.1031496>>1031504 >>1031516

>>1031475

But TLS works as expected right? I remember someone saying that outproxies had to perform MITM attacks to work because i2p wasn't designed to route clearnet connections in the first place. Did that change since then?

 No.1031504

>>1031496

i2p works similarly to tor, except inside one i2p packet there are numerous packets from users on the network, and you are required to route for other users. when the final node in the route gets a request for a clearnet packet request, if it has the outproxy configured, it will run as an outproxy and pass the request / ack through.

Is this seriously how this is supposed to work, adding a ton of hostnames all the time?

>But TLS works as expected right?

I haven't had any issues.

>i2p wasn't designed to route clearnet connections in the first place.

Well, yes. Unlike Tor, which has always been a distributed proxy first and foremost, I2P focuses on the overlay network aspect, and regards outproxying as an afterthought. The other important part is that I2P is UDP-based, whereas you (usually) need TCP for clearnet.

>Did that change since then?

There are tools to tunnel TCP. The outproxy will then just pass it to Tor or let it go out directly, depending on configuration.

 No.1031524

>>1031513

Not hostnames. And you don't need to restart for it to take effect either. That defeats the purpose of i2p.

I2p has a booru with a surprising amount of content. It's not very practical given the size of the network. And it isn't organized well (can only enter 2 tags too).

There is a Chinese imageboard and many Russian imageboards. No english boards that I can think of.

The network is a lot slower than Tor, but it's very good for torrenting. If you're looking for something specific there probably won't be a torrent for it unless it's popular, but if there's still a lot of content. And joining the network always helps.

If you're just looking at text or small thumbnails it should be fast enough.

I posted it and thought the same after, but who knows I guess. I mean really, I think if they wanted to get to you they could discover an IP somehow, powerful agencies with high computing capabilities. Most people aren't even a target of an attack or inquiry though.

 No.1044113>>1044550

I think they used to be a couple of image boards on i2p or tor But I think some of them got taken down or hacked Every image board I visited on there so far was taken down already or compromised I've tried setting up an image board tunneling through i2p But the ivChan doesn't like proxies for some reason Plus I was trying to host it on a machine underneath my desk which probably wasn't a good idea
