The BSDs (with the exception of freebsd; forks from before the code of conduct are generally unaffected by it UNLESS they take from freebsd's tainted driverspace) are free of the cancer known as a "code of conduct".
The BSDs work on a "cathedral" based model, in which the kernel core system utilities are developed together, in contrast to Linux's "bazaar" model, in which only the kernel is developed and other utilities are used or unused according to users's preferences.
Each has a different kernel. freebsd excelled for being mostly general purpose, running native zfs (now taken by linux and still used in Solaris), jails (also taken by other OSes), for having nvidia propietary drivers, etc.
OpenBSD's focus is true, stringent security and adherence to the UNIX Philosophy.
NetBSD's specialty is to be able to run in many, many architectures (40 to 80)
The other derivates, like DragonflyBSD, have several other things, like very robust filesystems, named HAMMER and HAMMER2, etc.
