Tomorrow, 6 Dec, WordPress 5.0 will be released.

WordPress is the most used CMS and a shitload of sites run on it.

The problem is that they've decided to integrate a broken editor called Gutenberg in the core. It's not just a mess in terms of usability, but it just doesn't work due to it being badly made Javascript bloat.

Despite the clear hate from the community, tomorrow normal people will update to 5.0 and find an editor they don't understand and probably many sites will break.

It's gonna be a fun day.

This update is literally going to break all the websites we make to clients at work and make it impossible to continue that business going forward. We use those "custom fields" plugins extensively to make customized websites to businesses, and guten(((berg))) will break compatibility.

I fucking hate wordpress and this is basically the last nail in the coffin. However it's the only thing I know that lets us do this kind of thing without having to fuck with the server-side software, and that makes it easy for the client to add/modify content on their own.

The problem is that WordPress has the best ecosystem right now due to the enormous amount of plugins and themes. There is a plugin for everything and they work really well. One just needs to tweak the code a little in rare cases and then he has a money-making website up and running in no time.

What could substitute WordPress right now?

I still hope they will change their minds and release WP6.0 without all this bullshit.

We won't, but it'll be tough to convince everyone to ignore it when wordpress starts screaming and throwing popups telling them to update. My main concern is if there's a major vulnerability, since we won't be able to download a patch to fix it.

I'd love an alternative and I'm sure my boss wouldn't oppose it either, but I don't know of anything else that does the things we need it to. Wordpress isn't even close to ideal anyway.

Wordpress is cancer in the purest form, but they do supply security updates for a number of years. Organizations are by nature resistant to change, and if you tell your clients that people are having issues with WP5 and don't like it, they'll be more than happy to stay on 4.x. They'll probably thank you and appreciate your expertise

WordPress is not cancer at all. If you're a professional developer, aka you make money and make your clients money, WordPress is a great tool. Of course it's not devoid of problems, but they're not the ones the autistic programmers usually bring up.

Indeed this update is one of the first major problem in WordPress in a very long. It's sad because WordPress has been an incredible stable system that made a lot of developers and business serious money. A true value-creation tool.

I tried it and it's so confusing. At a glance it just seemed like a new way to work with the visual editor. Rarely do we use this, and I think you can force it back to the "classic" editor anyway. Updates are important if only for security reasons. I'm not sure what's really changed
