Who or what is the Star Wars saga (films) about for you? For me it's Anakin Skywalker. I think the reason it's Anakin for me is that as a 20 year old I grew up with the prequels and never thought they were bad. Whereas when I ask my family they always come up with Luke Skywalker as they are all 45+ and grew up on the Original Trilogy.

I always said that it was R2 and C3P0, because they're the only constants in the movies, and I like to believe that they're all retellings from R2's archives. That being said, I mostly stick to the comics/old games now so I don't really care. The reason the EU drew me in so much is that it gave everyone a backstory, with a literal universe worth of potential for cool stories.

I'm 34 and it's changed because for the longest time I only had the OT but as a teen the PT hit. So at first it was all about Luke, but eventually became about Darth vader to me. I tend to agree with Vader when he says that Anakin is dead in ROTJ, it is Darth Vader that kills his master. That is the only way to excuse the Anakin ghost as he had died at the end of the clone wars and was finally free of its imprisonment by Darth Vader. The PT is about creating Darth Vader, the journey that Anakin must grow and ultimately destroy himself so Vader can be born from his ashes. The OT is about Vader trying to get some closer, kill the rebellion, kill his old master, train his son, and finally killing his master are all objectives Vader chases each offering some form of closer. The rebels dead means he has brought some closer to the turmoil that he has dedicated himself to stilling. Killing Obi-Wan gives him closer over his jedi past. Training Luke would gave some closer to his long held feelings about Padme and the twins he thought he had lost. And killing Palpatine gives closer to his role as apprentice of the Sith.

Wasn't the idea behind those two characters that we sort of see the story through their eyes?

Well… i always watched the OT because of Vader, Luke was simply boring, and in the end Georgie Boy himself stated that the movies were about Anakin/Vader fall and redemption. Luke in the end was the deuteragonist.

Luke is kind of bland because he's the average kid hero you're supposed to project onto. Vader is a much bigger icon of Star Wars.

That was more the idea Fincher had in mind if he'd been given the opportunity, because thats like the original Kurosawa movie with the two peasants in the middle of a war. Btw that's why you know Disney wars is not SW anymore, having C3PO and R2 being just there for fan service.

It's the translation of ancient stories and archetypes to the modern times. The OT was the famous hero's journey of Luke Skywalker and his way to glory, the PT is the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker and his fall on disgrace, with the EU as the expansion of the world where those tales are told.
That's why the Yidsney trilogy and EU fails, it doesn't told another classical history for modern times, it's told what it have been told already but more hollow and soulless, with cheap fan service and special effects (which lacks the novelty that were in the Lucas films). It doesn't want to give a universal and timeless message, only make money and spread political propaganda that it's going to age like milk.

Luke is a viewer insert, but he has substance -his ambition to leave his inconsequential life on Tatooine for greater meaning in space, his rash attempt to save his friends on Cloud City, his struggle with the Dark Side and his decision to save his father.
Though I'm more of an Anakin fan as Anakin is a conflicted mind full of raw passions with a tragic fate.

As your family has never shown you the original trilogy, there is little hope left in life, and you must commit sudoku. You had a good run, OP.

lucas confirmed the droids as the storytellers back at the beginning, as an homage to the hidden fortress. as stated above, this is how you know the yidsney movies are shit, as they replaced the two with bb-8 and delegated the storytellers to shitty meme cameos

rebel outfits are a ww2/vietnam mashup, not quite generic. sure, imperials have shit that actually looks futuristic and space-y, but that's the whole point of the film: the empire has money and the rebellion has scraps

Would've been cool if the Rebels had uniforms and armour that looked like a mix of WWII GIs and the futuristic/sci-fi look of the Colonial Marines in Aliens. In universe it could be explained as the Rebels getting hold of Imperial tech and materials.

I actually like the look of the rebel soldiers. Their design really emphasizes the rag tag feel that they have. The spess marine designs are probably the most unique you'll get.

Still, even a ‘home army’ like the Volkssturm would have been better, with a lot more unique looks, as the soldiers are wearing leftover armour and uniforms they have, to whatever uniforms and armours they have found or own themselves – with armbands and helmets. That would also allow for a lot more unique weapons carried by the Rebels, and it’d really drive home how desperate their struggle is – a true space guerrilla force.
