I actually haven't read this series before, so I don't know if it's good or bad. So far it's looking a bit mediocre, but hopefully it turns around. Does anyone know how the blue girl is aware of the Vong? Is she from another comic or novel?

I'm not digging those ships on the last page, tbh. So far the comic feels very disjointed and confusing. The narrator tells us that the planet is about to be BTFO, even though we don't need to be told that as we are about to see it, but he doesn't tell us how Luke knows this guy or who these people are.
Is Tom Taylor a bad writer?

Do the Vong keep sex slaves? Are they an analogue for Muslims?

I'm starting to get into this, hopefully it just had a rocky start, but will continue to improve. The best parts so far seem to be the Jedi Academy stuff.

This is the main reason why I never liked the Vong stories. They were mostly a mixed bag that just fucked shit up for shock value. Their designs were cool though. Although there were probably better ways to handle them. I mean I like the majority of the SW, but any time Vong were involved I felt like I was guaranteed to have mixed feelings by the end.

This is canon now. When Luke discovered the impregnated women, he had no choice but to perform mass force abortions.

Someone talk me through this. Is this a direct adaptation of the first Vong story? Would you recommend it over reading the actual books?

I'd like to help but I really can't stand the Vong (although I like their lore) and I'm someone who loves everything else in Star Wars to death except Filoni's decisions. But from what little I know, Star Wars: Invasion does indeed cover most of the Vong stuff but does things a bit differently from the novels. Invasion doesn't cover the New Jedi Order novels, so whether its a continuity retcon or error or simply a time and budget thing is unknown to me.

Invasion is more of a side story that takes place during the early stages of the war. The series got canceled after a minor climax leaving some threads unresolved.
Don't know if I can recommend it over the books. On the one hand, the comic is probably more accessible since there's less references to other EU works and the writing is more consistent. But as I said, it ends in the middle of the war. On the other hand, there's 19 novels in the NJO series from different authors - some good, some bad, some skippable. You'll get more out of the novels, but if you can't stand the Vong or the darker tone in general that doesn't mean much.
I guess the comic might be a good way to dip your toes in the NJO era, but it's no substitute.

Would've been nice if they continued the comic to see what direction they would've taken the war. A damn shame. Did no other media attempt to continue the story or was it just contained with books? Also the fact that it had multiple authors is probably why I was less invested in the Vong stories than anything else since other arcs had only one or two writers to keep everything consistent.

>19 novels
Is that as arduous as it sounds? Why did they need that many?

Because it sold very well apparently. Despite all the hate their introduction got in the late 90s, their arrival caused quite a stir and it reignited interest in SW novels apparently, at least that's what Lucasfilm claimed. It guaranteed regular releases so it was mostly more of a business thing than a creative thing which is another reason why I'm not too fond of them. They were essentially more of a gimmick that worked far better in small doses, like this comic did. They didn't need 20 books that's for sure. They always felt out of place too, like you were looking at the darkest and edgiest timeline, that was before Disney of course which easily usurped it of that status.

It's arduous, but not because of the number of books. There's some "required reading" before you can jump in because the writers took worldbuilding much more serious and there's a lot of callbacks and characters from previous books that appear with little introduction. It's pretty neat if you're a lorefag because the setting feels more organic and less compartmentalized than it did the early 90s.
Also the series is still much better written than the ones that followed in the timeline, Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi, which had 9 books and 3 authors each.
IMO the real dealbreaker is the tonal shift towards a darker story and the intentional otherness of the Vong. You either like that or not. And if not, it just spoils a big chunk of the timeline.
>Why did they need that many?
Originally the story was centered around 5 "main books" with the rest being filler, kinda how Shadows of the Empire connected the movies. They should have written the main entries first and the rest later. The way it panned out is that some crucial events and character arcs happened in the in-between stories. "Traitor" for example is a small scale story about Jacen Solo, but his development in the book is so important you can't just skip it. It's a also a great read in its own right.
>>29993
Every single aspect of the series is a product of its time. People were tired of the Empire as a villain, so they created new villains. People were tired of the stakes never being as high as they were in the movies again, so raised them even higher. Conflicts being resolved in 1-3 books? Done. Luke having a dozen or so Jedi sidekicks who only appear in certain books and never interact with each other? Ditto. And so on.
It's all addressed there, which is both the series biggest strength and it's biggest flaw.

No this isn't an adaption of the Vong books, like others have said. For years I've always liked the concept of the Vong. I thought they were a cool enemy, but I never read the books and always heard negative feed back about them. I was bored a year or two ago and started listening to the audio book adaptions in my spare time. Perhaps this has colored my opinion, but I enjoy them. I wish I had the books because the audio adaptations cut combat sequences to save time. I skipped Vector Prime by accident and read the next four in order. The war hasn't gone too south yet so it doesn't seem that edgy to me, but I imagine someone who has read them can comment. The call backs and required reading don't bother me. If anything, reading about a character or place I don't know is fun because I can go and look up their past. The feeling that Star Wars is a huge interconnected world is exactly what nu wars fails for me so much. I enjoy that the Vong books do that a lot.
