Darth Vader's soldiers killed Luke's parent figures.

Darth Vader personally killed Luke's best friend from home.

He tortured Luke's sister.

He tortured Luke's new smuggler best friend.

He cut off Luke's hand.

Despite knowing all of that, Luke decided he was going to risk his life to convert Vader back to the light, and he succeeded.

A couple decades later, his nephew, someone he had seen grow up from childhood, thinks some dark thoughts and Luke can't handle it.
