Parsecs works as a measurement of time. Here's why:
Anyone who knows what a parsec is (3.26 light years) knew Han wasn't bullshitting, and was telling Luke and Obi-wan, that he navigated the falcon through the Deep Core and thus a shit-ton of Black Holes in the shortest distance anyone was recorded to have done it, without dying, in effect telling you that he could navigate Hyperspace better than anyone in the Galaxy. 12 parsecs is 3.26 light years. Han is a fucking speed demon and not a bullshitter or some "short distance" expert like the shitty Solo film would have you believe. Eat it Disneyfags and suck it naysayers who claim Han was bullshitting.

But I like the idea of him being a bullshitter better. It fits the boastful smuggler persona he's built up. Which would you rather have?
>OP pls donut steel gr8st smuggler EVAR cocksucker
or
>faggot sitting in cantinas trying to bullshit people so he can get a job
And the part where he corrects himself because Chewy blurted out at him, I always took it as Chewy saying "You're full of shit."

Kessel's in the Outer Rim though, not the Deep Core.
Unrelated, I personally think parsecs are bullshit because there's no reason parsecs would exist in the Star Wars universe. The length of a parsec is based on the diameter of Earth's orbit and the parallax shift of distant objects when they're viewed from different points in Earth's orbit; 1 parsec represents 1 arc-second of parallax shift. Earth doesn't exist in the /sw/ universe, so there's no basis for the parsec to exist.

There is a picture of the script floating around which implies that, but it's a partial image and I'm not certain if it's of an original script, or an unofficial reproduction. Regardless, EU authors have treated it as a serious claim. The young Han Solo trilogy specifically described as a combination of Han's daredevil pilotry and the Falcon's superior navcomputer allowing him to take a shorter route than most pilots dared to. Leland Chee confirmed this to be the correct interpretation at one point.

Quad of quads does have a certain truth to it, though. While I'm just fine with the official story, the idea of Han being a fast-talking bullshitter is in keeping with his character, and has an appeal of its own.

It might not be an Earth parsec, it might as well just be a Coruscant parsec or something else, but because the movie is in English and not in Basic it's translated into parsec.

The level of gymnastics required to come to that conclusion make me pretty assured it's just Han bullshitting but it's an interesting theory nonetheless

a few things, lads
1) han has good piloting skills but was bullshitting about the kessel run, he needed to sell himself to guarantee the credits
2) op is a brainlet and anyone with an iq over 80 figured this out years ago

More like someone seeing an old geezer and a some young twat (who likely have never even seen a space ship in their life) and trying to know just how stupid they really are. which, as it turned out. ben ended up offering him well over what he thought he'd be able to get out of 'em.

You are omitting that the hyperdrive was fucked up. The boast was about the hyperdrive, not the sub-light engines. Tie interceptors were faster on dogfights if you pay attention to them in RoTJ

It wasn't the Deep Core, it was the Maw.
Also, the original intent was that he was bullshitting, Obi-wan's reaction reflects this. I don't mind the later explanation the EU went with but it's part of the greater trend in post-OT material sanitizing Han, just like Greedo shooting first, the A.C. Crispin books having Han as a generally idealistic guy until he gets screwed over on Ylesia, and Solo's plot dealing with fuel instead of drugs.

I don't know about any drug plots or anything like that, but let's not forget that he did a bunch of selfless shit during the original trilogy. Notably when he showed up to help with the death star, putting him and his ship in grave danger. I'm not saying this in order to justify any other gay shit, I'm just reminding you he's supposed to be somewhat reluctantly good.

That's true, but the whole point of that sequence wasn't that he was started the film "reluctantly good," he was pulled towards there by the events of ANH, and didn't actually find that selflessness within him until the climax of the film.
>>25227
I'm ambivalent, I can see the appeal both ways. While smug bullshitting is definitely in keeping with Han's character, the fact that some turbo-autists not only came up with a plausible justification for "less than 12 parsecs," but actually got it to be deemed C-Canon, is a testament to the EU community.
