I think the way KikeKikeAbrams handled it was fucking stupid.

Its fairly obvious that Section 31 is just a section of law, publicly available knowledge even. Their is no organization. Its just a legal excuse for Feddie Intelligence to do whatever they feel is necessary.

I guess Section 31 exists as a reaction to those other spy agencies. I mean, you wouldn't want to be the race that doesn't have its own machinery for physically removing spies, controlling information, etc.

No. That's why they remained a secret from the majority of the Federation unlike the Tal Shiar/Obsidian Order are from their populations. They're hidden because they are utterly incompatible with Federation morality and they sure as hell know it so they operate in the shadows.

As much as I enjoy the thematic device they (Theoretically) represent, the trope of people fighting for a world that would never be allowed in has worn thin for me.

I don't really consider it a thematic device any more, more a spark of realism. My comfortable first world life is built on the suffering of Chinese and Indian kids in 16 hour shift factories who will never know what it's like to live in a world where my greatest issue is being too bored and honestly I don't care. It's how life works, currently and through all of time. It's inalienably part of the human condition. I live the idea that paradise is maintained by sin. It's realistic. It makes the Federation seem less like a fantasy and more like a reality.
