I haven't kept up with trek shit for about 2 fucking decades, but still have a bit of a soft spot for this shit. Something I've had an interest in lately is early earth tech from the Star Trek universe. Ships and politics and general living and shit before Kirk. Mainly the tech though.

>inb4 "Enterprise" series

No, fuck You. That show sucked dick and felt nothing like the old-tech trek I had hoped for back in the day. Hell, it felt nothing like Trek period. But that's a rant for another time

I've been looking for canon info on old Starfleet or pre-Starfleet ships n' shit, but with all of the revisionist fiction out there now (STD, JJverse), it's getting hard to pin things down. Is there just not a lot of "old times" info for the Earth forces in the Trek universe? Most of what's out there is fan-fiction.

Old-tech Strek dump thread, I guess.

so, basically you're asking about pre-B&B era "classic" canon. you'ld be better off vetting elements from various alt-canon sources and assembling your own to share… there are many artists who stick very closely to the original ethos, aesthetic, and design principles and have attempted to fill-in the blanks.

As soon as the boomers took-over in the 90's they started retroacticely "updating" the aesthetic as well as mining what little material we had and using it contemporarily. Daedalus is a good example as it's most distinctive features were recycled for the the future Olympic class hospital ship in All Good Things. Eventually, designs like Akira-class got sent backwards and becoming the Enterprise in that ill-begotten series and the fuck-uppery of prime canon Trek was complete.

That's what I was afraid of. Figured I'd come here and ask You swole cadets what's up first though.

A few days ago I found this site "The Starfleet Museum"; It's fan-fiction, but the autistic fuck does a pretty good job of coming up with "old" tech details and ships. His version of the Earth-Romulan war actually sounds like the kind of scifi I'd like to see.

I remember there was a book BITD that had technical depictions of at least Kirk-era stuff, like the Saladin, Hermes, and what not. I could go to deviantart, but We all know for every one cool starship pic, there would be about a thousand Star Trek/furry fetish smut crossover stuff… I'll need at least a full bottle of Romulan ale in Me before suffering through that.

yep, i have a few of this faggot's charts and graphics in my stash. i'm pretty much doing the same thing - attempting a fan-fic for ships… there is another anon that was working on some charts with graphics in the ship autism thread.

Like a lot of ship enthusiasts, the Museum fag has too many designs though… or at least failed to explain what appears to be rule-of-cool induced redundancy… or maybe it was just supposed to be a clearinghouse for that aesthetic since a lot of people appear to have contributed renderings. I dunno. There is some inspiring work, though, if you like that era (i do) and hate all the prequels with updated aesthetics.

I still can't get over how ugly the CGI from the TOS remasters is. Why did they do it?

did they at least use that as an opportunity to fix errors caused by them being too cheap to make more than a couple of models for the baddie ships?

Yo dawg, I heard you liked deflectors, so we stacked a deflector on a deflector so the deflector can deflect the deflections.

I think this stuff is really interesting too, but Trekkies hate it.

When producers were first drafting Enterprise they wanted something set even earlier than the 2150s but realized Star Trek fans might react poorly to tech and settings that were too close to present day and not futuristic enough, turns out they were mostly correct.

Anyway Memory-Alpha is probably where you want to go, look up the Charybdis maybe.

A late 21st century show could have been interesting but the show would have been too Earth centric and devolve into a political drama with rubber forehead ayyliums and Vulcans. At this point it would not be possible to do this kind of show because they established that Earth ships were too slow to do any serious exploration until the NX-01 launched.

Most (((Trekkies))) are retarded. Most haven't even watched the TOS but think it's the best when in reality only about a third of the TOS is watchable and most of it is just recycled scripts of the same episode. Same thing about TNG; it's mostly dry although the good TNG episodes are really fucking great.

DS9 is actually a tad overrated although it does have some of the best characters. I'd say ENT comes second with characters more so of who gets introduced later and the actual character development that does happen. Although Orville is going to take this crown away soon TOS for how good the Spock, McCoy and Kirk dynamic goes kind of forgets about other characters apart from Scotty.

It would inevitably just turn into Little House on the Prairie in Space.

Does anybody really want to watch Terra Nova the TV show? I forgot that they tried this in the 90's with Earth 2, and it was horrible.

They did. I forget the episode but there was that cheap "the Romulans now using Klingon ship design" episode so they had some Romulan ships alongside the repeated Klingon model.

To the animators credit they invented as little as possible but the animation still looks unfinished, it's not that seamless and it was unnecessary.

interestingly, this always played-in to this lampshady and admittedly retarded headcanon theory i've nursed about a galactic engineer's guild / space hogwarts for some technology… mostly starships.. the purpose of which is to standardize everything for member races (Human/Starfleet, Vulcan, Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, etc.) which explains why so much of the technology is basically the same and characters often easily figure out how to operate them without necessarily knowing the local language. Operating a starship or station's systems is probably as complicated as playing a 2D smart phone game. The challenge being in when and why you should do something, not necessarily how.

> Earth 2

the main flaw Earth 2 had was that it tried to be space "Lost" rather than a space "little house on the prairie". Having them crash without most of their gear and getting forced to roam around as nomads was a bad move. It got way too tiresome as a premise. Having the cast land then set up a some what stable colony and getting some false feeling of safety before the weird and dangerous shit started happening would have made for stronger plots.

Also the twist that the planet was actually Space Australia where earth had once dumped some criminals but somehow no record of that existed when they decided to send a colony ship to the place was retarded.

Terra Nova wasn't exactly terribad, nor amazing. Just kind of ok.

For one thing they had a colonel Quaritch leading the camp, and they allow him to be in the right, in story, all the way. Makes up for the boring main character family.

I will grant though, that the overarcing plot had some of the most mindnumbing dumb baddies that we almost never see with one of the dumbest schemes ever.

Yeah, if a concept shows up as the punchline of a joke in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, it's safe to say it's a stupid idea.

It's not that bad when it's the whole "time traveling merchant steals valuable old stuff right before natural disasters hit" I think both Doctor Who and the Orville has used that plot.
