Life is what you make of it, anon. Regardless of what portion of the bad in your life is your fault, the result of bad shit happening to you, or you shifting blame of your own inadequacies to irrelevant bad shit, your life is only as shitty as you think it is, and what you set your goals to be. I'll be lucky if I'll be above-average in my field of choice; there are a large number of fucks stupider than I am but also a fair few that are smarter than I am or as smart but more charismatic/more motivated. But that doesn't bother me because I haven't tied my happiness to it. As long as I am certain that my actions are moral and honorable, and that I'm doing right by my family, I will have my goals fulfilled, and I will be satisfied. Meanwhile, there are spoiled egotistical preppies that are fresh out of some Ivy League propaganda center, who have landed a cushy and well-paying job in their profession of choice, without very much effort on their part. But despite these advantages they will never be happy because they will never be satisfied with anything besides total perfection and the universe catering to their every whim, like the spoiled children that they really are.
I used career as the example here but I believe this principle can apply to most walks of life. To what degree external forces determine your inner state of being is, on some level, up to you.
