so some info dropped recently about Star Trek Discovery that shed a lot of light on JJ Trek

>The Star Trek IP is split between two companies

>One owns JJ trek the other owns Prime (aka good Trek)

>JJ Trek was not allowed to use elements from Prime trek. The only things it was allowed to use was superficial.

>this included things like having to make the uniforms slightly different, make the look of the enterprise different, make it an alternate timeline, make the Romulans look different, make the klingons look different

>Had to license things like tribbles separately

>this carries over into Star Trek Discovery

>Despite taking place at the same time as "The Cage" Star Trek Discovery can't actually use things like the uniforms or ship designs of TOS

>had to make their own Klingons

>are going to make the lead character Spock's half sister because of timeline mumbo jumbo

>this is intentional to set it apart legally from Prime trek into it's own continuity.

It's like JJ Trek and Discovery were intentionally shit by design

I at least gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought setting it in a different timeline was done for artistic reasons

Finding a lot of this shit out now makes me really question if we'll ever get any good future trek series now.

We will eventually. At some point, the IP will either be sold off, consolidated, or lapse into public use.

It's not made because of "muh timeline" but because of [current year] writing where they can't write a female character without her being superior to a well-established character. Their only solution: they lower the bar so that the former known character gets pushed on the background to be forgotten.

This shit is happening here with Spock but it happened everywhere: Avatar The Legend of Whorra where they went their way to erase the past incarnations so that there's only Korra, or recently Star Wars with Luke Skywalker who became a random extra in the background while they erased everything he did (he was the hero of 3 movies but only appeared 5 sec in TFA and they downplayed his role on the battle of Yavin by rewriting the lore via Rogue One where we learned that the flaw in the Death Star wasn't a mistake, it was done on purpose by the father of iRebel, she's the hero who gave the plans to the Rebels).

>JJ Trek was not allowed to use elements from Prime trek. The only things it was allowed to use was superficial.

You have it backwards. If this information proves true, the terms of the license likely stipulate that a licensee (Bad Robot, Paramount) can only use essential "elements" of the franchise and the superficial stuff must be different.

What we got with the Kelvin films and what we appear to be getting with the new series are Officially Licensed Products… basically lunchboxes and vinyl FunPop dolls in cinematic form. They are caricatures that are designed to evoke (and capitalize on) the original, but should never be mistaken for the original.

We don't know for sure what the strategy is behind this, but it could be that CBS, being aware of how rabid and obsessive Star Trek fans are, are trying to have their cake and eat it too. They are able to exploit the Star Trek IP that they own - in whatever way they choose - while giving fans an "out". Because it is required to be visually distinct, it will be easier for fans to memory hole it ,thus protecting CBS from much of their rage.

Did fans ever get viscerally angry at every bad Star Trek video game? CBS wants that same freedom with the actual TV and film content, too. As for how fans (and the writers themselves) are supposed to make sense of what is canon and what isnt, I have no idea.

You can call it autism. We're all friends, here.

It is not autism to want people to not destroy something you hold dear

Never said it was. I know full well how infuriating it is to find out that the social justice fucks have been messing with something you love. Comics, video games, movies, etc. In their eagerness to promote their "safe spaces," they are invading and eroding ours.
