It's kind of depressing when you look back on the past and the way they envisioned the future. Population replacement was never in their minds. They imagined that all nations would scrub away the problems, but kept what was great about their cultures. France would always be a land of classical art, the Eiffel tower, wine, and passionate love, for example. It was unthinkable that these bastions of western culture would be overrun, torn down, and replaced with the culture of invading hordes of greedy invaders.

Hell, going back to DS9, despite the pozz present in some episodes, one of the on-going conflicts was Bajor trying to rebuild and re-establish it's culture and reclaim it's heritage after an invading force attempted to subvert and destroy their entire civilization.

Roddenberry was being a little bit of a hack by writing Wesley Crusher as his Treksona self-insert, but the real problem was and always will be Wil the Soyboy Wheaton. You think that whiny, dumpy, faggot persona he's cultivated over the past 20 years is because of Star Trek? Every single actor on TNG loved Gene Roddenberry and regarded him as a close friend and part of their family. Try and find an interview where anyone has anything bad to sad about him.

The real problem was that Wheaton had a bug up his ass and believed he was destined to be a big star, so he kept trying to weasel his way out of his shooting schedule with TNG. This clearly pissed off Roddenberry who had planned seasons worth of episodes of developing his character into a respectable and eventually likable character who was supposed to go on to become a big player in Starfleet and part of humanity's ascension to the next level. Instead, Dick Wheaton starts acting like an uppity cunt. Would you tell an actor who behaves that way that you are going to be making his character more important? That you intended to put him on the level of Picard and Riker? He'd probably start demanding more money and get an even bigger ego over it. They were already working on a limited budget, so that's out of the question.

Roddenberry likely had to throw out a number of scripts and long-term plans because of that impudent little shit, and after all of it, after Roddenberry's death and Wheaton's fall to "most hated child actor", the obnoxious faggot goes on to blame Star Trek for ruining his acting career while simultaneously shamelessly cashing in on that nerd cred to rebuild his persona as a geek icon. Considering how badly he tried getting back into acting over and over and over again, I doubt he was ever even diddled by some Hollywood degenerate.

It's a little of both; shit character concept, shit production priorities and shit actor combined into a black hole. Wes is a lot like Matthew Waterhouse from Doctor Who, who played a similarly hated character in that series across the pond but once he started telling OLD pros like Richard Todd what to do, he had his ass thrown out the door a few weeks later and his character killed with extreme prejudice even despite being a raging fag in a production crew of raging fags; his fellow stars on the show had to hide laughter during the final shots of his death scene.

But TNG still hasn't left Wil's orbit, because he contaminated the show for a much longer period of time, with full doses in the first half of the show and seasonal appearances up until the very end. Damn lucky for the films to avoid him popping up since he was almost shown in Nemesis. As a result Matthew is forgotten while Wil still is around to poz up cons and a culture he has no part being apart of.
