I'm retired and much of the time I have little to do other than some basic maintenance around our rural homestead. I just got done watering and weeding out the garden and watering our greenhouse plants. My family still works most of the time and I do the basic chores and yard work as needed, but that only takes up 25% of my time. So what else would you expect an old geezer like myself to do the rest of the time? It's not like I'm still young and can go to a friend's house anytime I want. As you get older everyone you know lives further away and is caught up busy living their own lives and caring for their own families. Just the way life is as you get older. You'll find that out yourself eventually.

You being old has nothing to do with your lifestyle son you choose this I've seen it many times before even boys in their 20s the simple humble house husband maybe you could try doing something more productive in your freetime like reading a book working out going out for a walk/jog all those years just to live out the rest of your days like that what a pity but to each their own

You confine yourself in your comfort zone of family instead of meeting new people and going to new places there's always things to do and people to be with you just have to put in the work and explore life to the fullest

Not always, I do find time to chill with friends and relatives, like I did on the 4th of July, and we have plenty of fun. But it is usually holidays or memorial weekend when I go to a party or throw a get-together. It's not as easy to do normally when people are working and when many of your friends and relatives live 5+ hours commute away. That takes planning and people arranging time and travel expenses (and vice versa for us too). I love living in the country but that is one of the compromises you make for doing so.

It is the lifestyle I have chosen, I won't deny that. It's one of the sacrifices we made to get out of dodge a few years ago, we no longer wanted to live anywhere near populated areas considering the country is going to hell in a hand-basket, civilized society is breaking down and the horrific insolvent financial system America is stuck with will only compound all the problems we have long into the future. I do find time to commute here and there but gas is not cheap and typically it takes me 65 minutes to commute to the nearest Costco just to go shopping and re-stock needed supplies on a monthly basis. Everything is more expensive today and it's not like I have unlimited savings, I already put a lot of money into prepping and helped pay off the mortgage already. Splurging in my last years would only drain what fiscal safety net we have left. That's why I'll just stick with booze, it's enough to keep me satisfied from time to time without costing too much.

It wasn't an easy move I can assure you that but we made it happen, although a bit stressful. The question is whether we made the right move, and only the future will indicate whether we did or not. With the BLM riots, the covid lockdowns, the illegal immigrants and the crime waves taking over cities and many suburban areas we decided that was the time to make the decision to get out of dodge and move to the country where we can be more self-sufficient and get far away from any societal chaos. If America does collapse I know we made the right decision. If we were just paranoid, and all the corruption comes to an end and the debt insolvency results in some form of jubilee and a new gold-backed currency then maybe we didn't make such a good choice. We'll wait and see.

I'm just a caveman who has been here in too many places for way too long who likes to explore sites here and there and that sounds like more a gamble to me

My daughter and her son-in-law lived in the suburbs and I lived in a smaller town about 25 minute commute from the outskirts of St. Louis MO at the time. Although it took some time to get used to living more rural, especially for the both of them, it's also what they wanted too. They wanted some elbow room and knew I was already a prepper so it was in our mutual interest combining our resources and finances.

It has it's ups and downs like anywhere else. If you want more convenience you have to put up with more people and that kind of environment. If you want lots of beautiful nature around you, peace and quite, and to be able to touch grass without hearing traffic all around, then you give up some convenience.

You gain some and you lose some all depends on what you value and what you really want
