Roberts, senators to be sworn in Thursday for impeachment trial

Chief Justice John Roberts and every senator will be sworn in as soon as Thursday for the soon-to-begin impeachment trial.

A Senate GOP leadership aide said on Wednesday that the House managers are expected to come to the chamber on Thursday to read the articles of impeachment against President Trump.

After that Roberts is expected to be sworn in. He will then swear in all 100 senators, according to the aide.

The new details on what the first few days of the impeachment trial will look like come after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced the seven House impeachment managers on Wednesday. The House is expected to vote later Wednesday to formally name the managers and transmit the two impeachment articles to the Senate.

The move will shift the impeachment fight to the Senate after a weeks-long delay amid a standoff between Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

McConnell and Schumer circulated a "Dear Colleague" letter to senators and staff on Wednesday detailing what they can expect during the trial.

"Following past practice, the upcoming impeachment trial necessitates some access modifications to the Senate Wing of the Capitol, the Senate floor and the galleries," they wrote in a three-page letter.

Senators are also circulating rules for senators during the impeachment trial, including banning lawmakers from bringing electronics on the floor. That rule, in particular, has earned public grumbling from lawmakers, who will be required to sit silently in their chairs during the trial.

"We will not have our electronic devices. I just saw a piece of cabinetry in the cloakroom where we will be required to turn over our iPads and our iPhones," Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said this week.

The document sent to senators does not detail what restrictions will be put on reporters in the Capitol to cover the trial, though Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) told reporters on Tuesday that it was discussed during the closed-door caucus lunch.

Reports of a planned crackdown on media access drew swift backlash on Tuesday.

The restrictions, according to the Standing Committee of Correspondents, include confining reporters to a single press pen on the second floor of the Senate. If implemented, it would curtail reporters' access to senators during a historic impeachment trial.

Michael Avenatti jailed over new money laundering accusations

Los Angeles attorney Michael Avenatti engaged in fraud and money laundering to hide $1 million from one of his ex-wives and other creditors after his March arrest, federal prosecutors allege in newly filed court papers.

Avenatti, who is awaiting trial on three federal indictments, was arrested again late Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles and remained in custody Wednesday morning, according to Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles.

Prosecutors are seeking a hearing Wednesday in federal court in Santa Ana on their request to revoke Avenatti’s bail.

In documents filed in the federal court, they allege that Avenatti received the $1 million in legal fees in April as part of a client’s settlement, but concealed the money from his second ex-wife, Lisa Storie Avenatti; a former law partner; tax authorities; and other creditors.

Avenatti’s latest arrest took place at a California State Bar Court hearing, where the bar was seeking to block him from practicing law while he faces fraud, extortion and other charges in the three federal indictments. Prosecutors and the State Bar say he stole millions of dollars from his own clients.

Avenatti, who gained fame as the lawyer for porn actress Stormy Daniels, one of the clients he is accused of cheating, has denied wrongdoing. His lawyer, H. Dean Steward, did not immediately return a call for comment.

In the court papers, prosecutors described elaborate steps taken by Avenatti to hide the $1 million by shifting it through multiple bank accounts and using cashier’s checks to spend it.

Avenatti, who is scheduled to go on trial next week in New York federal court for allegedly trying to extort sports giant Nike out of more than $20 million, used the money to cover rent on his luxury apartment in Century City, pay his legal bills and buy a $50,000 Mercedes-Benz, according to the court documents.

Avenatti initially tried to buy the car in his own name, but then worked with his first ex-wife, Christine Avenatti Carlin, to put it in her name instead, prosecutors allege. He drew from the $1 million to pay his personal driver, they said.

Avenatti also used the money to pay membership fees to Exclusive Resorts, an elite vacation club with luxury properties in Florida, New York and California, where Avenatti stayed at least four times while awaiting trial, prosecutors said. He also allowed a girlfriend to stay at an Exclusive Resorts property in Tuscany, Italy, they said.

Prosecutors noted that Avenatti had an Italian passport when he was arrested last year and said his girlfriend’s trip to Tuscany raises questions about whether Avenatti had hidden assets in Europe.

Prosecutors said Avenatti received a $1-million cashier’s check on April 30 but failed to turn over the money to creditors who had legal claims on the money.

Central Nebraska student arrested for alleged child exploitation scheme

Teacher arrested for child pornography

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A central Nebraska high school student, and a teacher at his school, were arrested Tuesday on charges related to child pornography.

These arrests resulted from an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Grand Island (Nebraska) Police Department.

Brian Mohr, 37, a teacher at Northwest High School in Grand Island, Nebraska, was taken into custody at his residence. A 17-year-old Northwest High School student was also taken into custody.

The arrests are in relation to a case in which it is alleged that the student obtained elicit images of other minors via a social media ruse, and then used some of those images to coerce them into performing sexual acts and to provide additional images. Those images were then allegedly shared with Mohr. Numerous images have been identified as students at the school where Mohr is employed.

The student suspect was arrested on charges of 1st degree sexual assault, human trafficking of a minor, unlawful intrusion, and multiple counts of distribution of child pornography. Mohr was arrested as a suspect in multiple counts of possession of child pornography. All the charges are classified as felonies.

This remains an ongoing investigation and is being worked with the full cooperation of the Northwest School District.

This investigation was conducted under HSI’s Operation Predator, an international initiative to protect children from sexual predators. Since the launch of Operation Predator in 2003, HSI has arrested more than 25,000 individuals for crimes against children, including the production and distribution of online child exploitation material, traveling overseas for sex with minors, and sex trafficking of children. In fiscal year 2019, more than 3,500 child predators were arrested by HSI special agents under this initiative and more than 1,000 victims identified or rescued.

Russian Government 101: How Did it Work and What’s About to Change?

The government of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who had been in the role since 2012, submitted its resignation hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed sweeping changes to the Constitution that would redistribute the powers between the president and parliament.

In an abrupt move on Wednesday, Russia’s Prime Minister Medvedev announced that his entire government would resign.

Medvedev’s cabinet will continue to work in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed.

Putin offered to name Medvedev as deputy chairman of the Security Council, an advisory body under the President in charge of strategic planning relating to national security affairs.

How does the Russian government work?

According to the current Constitution, adopted in 1993, the government exercises executive power; it drafts and implements the federal budget and carries out the national policy in the sphere of finance, foreign policy, education, healthcare, culture, science, and so on.

The government may submit its resignation to the President who also has the power to dissolve it. Another way to dissolve the government is for the Duma, the lower house of parliament, to pass a motion of no confidence, which can be vetoed by the President.

The President appoints the Prime Minister with the Duma’s consent; Vladimir Putin appointed Dmitry Medvedev as prime minister twice, in 2012 and in 2018, after winning presidential elections.

The President also appoints the deputy heads of government (there are 10 of them in the current cabinet) and the federal ministers at the Prime Minister’s suggestion. It is in the President’s power to dismiss both the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers.

What is to change?

In a move that looks set to significantly boost the power of parliament, Vladimir Putin called for changes to the Constitution that would enable the Duma to select the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers instead of the President.

Having announced the redistribution of power, Putin has stressed that Russia still needs to remain a “strong presidential republic”. According to Russian law, Putin now has two weeks to appoint a new Prime Minister.

IDF attacks targets in Gaza in response to rocket fire - report

Rocket alert sirens were activated in southern Israel on Wednesday afternoon as four rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel.

The IDF attacked targets in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday evening, hours after four rockets were fired into Israeli territory from Gaza, according to Palestinian reports.

Initial reports suggested that Israeli Air Force jets were attacking Hamas targets in the northern Strip.

A group of incendiary balloons were also launched towards the southern city of Sderot from Gaza, a city spokesperson said on Wednesday evening. Israel Police bomb disposal experts were dispatched to the scene after reports of a suspicious object that was attached to several balloons that landed in one of the neighborhoods of Sderot.

Rocket alert sirens were activated in southern Israel on Wednesday afternoon as four rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel.

The sirens were heard in Nahal Oz, Saad and Kfar Aza.

The IDF reported that two of the rockets fell in open territory and two were intercepted by the Iron Dome.

Israel's Magen David Adom ambulance service said no injuries or damage were reported in the first such attack in three weeks.

There was no immediately claim of responsibility from the Palestinian Gaza Strip, which Israel keeps under blockade citing security concerns over its Islamist rulers Hamas.

Last month, a rocket was launched from the Gaza Strip at the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon as it hosted a rally with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, prompting him to seek shelter briefly before returning to the venue. No one was hurt.
