Conclusions

This collection of what might be termed ancient UFO reports has

been culled from a much larger number of reports of aerial objects,

most of whose identifications with known phenomena are either certain or at least highly probable. Embedded in the mass of relatively

explicable ancient reports, however, is a small set of unexplained (or

Obama Appointee Blocks North Carolina from Requiring Voter ID

U.S. District Court Judge Loretta Biggs has delayed a decision on North Carolina voter ID legislation until next week.

Judge Biggs, an Obama appointee, has temporarily blocked measures that would require legal identification at the ballot box in 2020. Notification of the delay was appended to NAACP et al v. Cooper, one of two lawsuits challenging the new restrictions. The decision comes just before a statewide mailing which would explain them.

“The court gave advance notice that it will rule with plaintiffs and preliminarily enjoin the photo voter ID law next week,” Caitlin Swain, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said in an e-mail statement. “We are awaiting the full order, gratified that the court is intervening to prevent this discriminatory law from impeding North Carolinians equal access to the ballot.”

North Carolina’s State Board of Elections opposed the injunction when it was originally requested in September, but State Board spokesperson Patrick Gannon said Friday morning that it will be up to Attorney General Josh Stein to decide what action, if any, will be taken. Meanwhile, Stein spokesperson Laura Brewer indicated the Attorney General’s Office will not decide on its approach until the full order is released.

Speaker of the House Tim Moore called on the Board to fight “this last-minute attempt by an activist federal judge to overturn the will of North Carolina voters.” In a statement e-mailed to WRAL News, the Speaker said:

To issue an injunction against one of the nation’s most lenient voter ID laws — which 34 states already have — without providing an opinion is an outrageous affront to due process, the rights of North Carolina voters, and the rule of law.

Via text, WRAL reports that House Rules Chairman David Lewis said the General Assembly will also “explore additional options to ensure that the people’s vote for voter ID is respected.”

Immigration Judges Quitting in Frustration After Trump Admin Crack Down

Immigration judges frustrated with the Trump administration’s tightening of control over the Department of Justice based immigration court system are resigning from the bench in higher than normal numbers, many out of frustration, according to a report by CNN. The crack down began under former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and has continued under Attorney General William Barr.

At the same time, the Trump administration has increased the number of judges to its highest number as the system is overwhelmed with cases stemming from the recent border surges.

Lisa Dornell loved her job. For 24 years, she sat on the bench in Baltimore’s immigration court, hearing hundreds of cases of immigrants trying to stay in the United States.

“It was an honor. It was a privilege to be able to preside over so many different cases and be able to grant relief to people who needed relief,” Dornell told CNN in an interview.

But she walked away from that job in April — a decision that still invokes a wave of emotion when she recalls it. “The toxic environment made it both harder and easier to leave,” Dornell said.

Over the past year, in the heat of a border migration crisis, 45 judges have left, moved into new roles in the immigration court system — which is run by the Justice Department — or passed away, according to the department. That’s nearly double the number who departed their posts in fiscal years 2018 and 2017, when 24 and 21 judges left, respectively, according to data provided by the judges union.

The reasons why individual judges have moved on from their posts on the bench vary, but in interviews with judges who left in recent months, one theme ties them all together: frustration over a mounting number of policy changes that, they argue, chipped away at their authority.

Their departures come as the Justice Department faces a backlog that exceeds 1 million cases. The bogged-down system has led to immigration cases being pushed out years in the future, leaving many immigrants residing in the US unsure if they’ll be allowed to stay or be ordered removed.

…The Trump administration was no exception. Trump’s first attorney general, Jeff Sessions, implemented a series of changes to the immigration court system that have continued under his successor, William Barr.

The Justice Department has imposed case quotas, given more power to the director charged with overseeing the courts, reversed rulings, curtailed judges’ ability to exercise discretion in some cases and moved to decertify the union of immigration judges.

Over time, those actions prompted immigration judges, some of whom were retirement eligible and had decades of experience, to leave the department despite initial plans to stay longer.

“I felt then and I feel now that this administration is doing everything in its power to completely destroy the immigration court system, the board of immigration appeal and the immigration system in general,” said Ilyce Shugall, who served as an immigration judge in San Francisco from 2017 until March of this year. “And I just couldn’t be a part of that.”

On December 20, the Justice Department announced the investiture of 28 new immigration judges:

Iraq's K1 Military Base Near Kirkuk Which Houses US Forces Hit By Rockets - Iraqi Military

The base is located 15 km northwest of Kirkuk and houses US military forces alongside Iraqi forces, Reuters said, citing security sources.

Several rockets have hit Iraq's K1 military base near the city of Kirkuk on Friday, Reuters has reported, citing a statement by the Iraqi military.

The base, which lies 15 km northwest of Kirkuk, houses US military forces as well as Iraqi forces from the Federal Police and Counter-Terrorism Service, the agency says, citing security sources.

US officials revealed to Reuters that one US civilian contractor was killed during the strike, and that "multiple" service members had been injured. However, many of the injured are believed to have already returned to duty.

Security forces found a launchpad for Katyusha rockets inside an abandoned vehicle near the base, sources said as quoted by Reuters.

No group has taken responsibility for the attack, the news agency reported.

This is not the first time the US forces in Iraq have been under attack. Earlier in the month, the Balad Air Base was hit by five rockets which landed less than a mile from the base hosted by US servicemen.

The base has been struck amidst the ongoing mass protests which started in early October and then turned into clashes with police forces. Demonstrators called for the deposition of the government, as well as economic reforms, better living conditions, social welfare and an end to corruption. As of now, according to the Iraqi Health Ministry, 400 people have been killed in the protests so far, and over 15,000 have been injured.

Chemical Weapons Watchdog Ordered Deletion of ‘All Traces’ of Findings That Syrian ‘Chemical Attack’ May Have Been Staged

Wikileaks has published shocking leaked documents from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in which they covered up a dissenting report that concluded chemical weapons were not used in the Syrian city of Duoma last year.

In one of the leaked e-mail exchanges, from February 27-28, between members of the fact finding mission (FFM) deployed to Douma and senior officials of the OPCW, the watchdog’s Chief of Cabinet Sebastien Braha ordered the removal of “all traces” of a report by Ian Henderson.

“Please get this document out of DRA [Documents Registry Archive]… And please remove all traces, if any, of its delivery/storage/whatever in DRA,” the email reads.

Henderson had inspected the sites in Douma and two cylinders that were found on the site of the alleged attack. In his report, he had concluded that the cylinders were more likely placed there — not dropped. His findings heavily indicated that the “attack” was staged.

US media and politicians uncritically claimed that the cylinders were dropped from the air by the Syrian government, killing civilians.

Since the cylinders appeared to be placed by hand, and the area was under the control of anti-government forces, Henderson’s findings lend credence to theories that the attack was staged to set up the Syrian president and prompt the US to attack.

WikiLeaks also released minutes from a meeting on June 6, 2018 where members of OPCW met with “three Toxicologists/Clinical pharmacologists, one bioanalytical and toxicological chemist” who all specialize in chemical weapons.

The purposes of this meeting were “to solicit expert advice on the value of exhuming suspected victims of the alleged chemical attack in Douma on 7 April 2018” and “to elicit expert opinions from the forensic toxicologists regarding the observed and reported symptoms of the alleged victims.” They were particularly interested in “…whether the symptoms observed in victims were consistent with exposure to chlorine or other reactive chlorine gas.”

The US State Department has issued an ultimatum to European companies taking part in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, demanding they cease all work by January 20.

In a document called ‘fact sheet’ on the US opposition to Nord Stream 2, the State Department demands that all related parties “immediately cease construction-related activity” in a “good-faith wind-down,” adding that those who would lack this good faith, would face sanctions.

Further in the text, it clarifies that the contractors have 30 days to comply with America’s demands, warning that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will identify and reveal all “violators” to the US Congress in about two months.

Apart from threats of sanctions against those who defy Washington and cooperate with Russia on the gas pipeline project, the document repeats arguments about Nord Stream 2 allegedly harming Ukraine’s interests and threatening European energy security. “The United States’ intention is to stop construction of Nord Stream 2,” it bluntly says.

The US' threats have alienated a Swiss-Dutch construction company, Allseas, which earlier halted work on the last section of the pipe. However on Friday, Russian Minister of Energy Alexander Novak said that the pipeline would still be launched by the end of 2020 as Russia itself has the equipment needed to complete construction.

Objections to the pipeline from Washington and its European client states have been mainly political in nature, dealing with the potential loss of leverage more than anything else. The US has even called Germany a “hostage” because of its “increasing dependency” on Russian gas, while offering its own liquefied natural gas – officially described as “molecules of freedom” – as an alternative, though at a much higher price. Ukraine and Poland, in their turn, have bemoaned that Nord Stream 2 would rob them of billions of dollars in transit fees they’ve been collecting from Russia over the years.

Pearson PLC said Wednesday that Chief Executive John Fallon plans to retire next year, and that it has agreed to sell its remaining 25% stake in Penguin Random House to Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA for $675 million.

The London-based education publisher PSON, -0.46% said Fallon will retire in 2020 once a successor has been appointed. The company will consider both external and internal candidates as part of a succession process, it said.

Pearson said the sale of its remaining stake in Penguin Random House to its partner is in line with the company’s simplification strategy and follows the disposal of a 22% interest in the joint venture two years ago.

The deal, which remains subject to regulatory consent and is expected to close in the first half of 2020, gives Penguin Random House an enterprise value of $3.67 billion, Pearson said.
