Pompeo Issues Historic Policy Reversal: Israeli West Bank Settlements 'Not Illegal'

In a major, if entirely expected, complete reversal of Obama-era policy on the Middle East, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Monday the Trump administration is reversing the official US stance on the illegality of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

“After carefully studying all sides of the legal debate, this administration agrees with President Reagan,” Pompeo said in reference to Reagan’s view that settlements were not inherently illegal. “The establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not per se inconsistent with international law,” Pompeo said.

“The Trump administration is reversing the Obama administration’s approach towards Israeli settlements. U.S. public statements on settlement activities in the West Bank have been inconsistent over decades.”

This came after the State Department’s legal office was ordered to conduct a year-long review of the official US policy on the expanding settlements in the West Bank, according to The Jerusalem Post.

This will further widen the gap on the issue between Washington its own European allies and international institutions, and among most UN members, given the US already often votes alone over and against much of the world on Israeli-Palestine related issues.

The EU court, for example, earlier this month moved to require all EU countries to specially label any product made in illegal Israeli West Bank settlements, something US Congressional leaders are attempting to lobby EU officials against, according to reports.

“In 1978, the Carter administration categorically concluded that Israel’s establishment of civilian settlements was inconsistent with international law,” Pompeo explained. “However, in 1981, President Reagan disagreed with that conclusion and stated that he didn’t believe that the settlements were inherently illegal.”

“The hard truth is that there will never be a judicial resolution to the conflict and arguments about who is right and who is wrong as a matter of international law will not bring peace,” Pompeo said further.

“This is a complex political problem that can only be solved by negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians,” America's top diplomat added.

It will also likely inflame tensions and protests in Gaza and the West Bank, after last year the US moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and controversially issued formal recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Hacker Publishes 2TB of Data From Cayman National Bank An anonymous reader quotes a report from Motherboard: On Sunday, Motherboard reported that the hacker or hackers known as Phineas Fisher targeted a bank, stole money and documents, and is offering other hackers $100,000 to carry out politically motivated hacks. Now, the bank Phineas Fisher targeted, Cayman National Bank from the Isle of Man, confirmed it has suffered a data breach. "It is known that Cayman National Bank (Isle of Man) Limited was amongst a number of banks targeted and subject to the same hacking activity," Cayman National told Motherboard in a statement issued Monday. "A criminal investigation is ongoing and Cayman National is co-operating with the relevant law enforcement authorities to identify the perpetrators of the data theft. Cayman National takes any breach of data security very seriously and a specialist IT forensic investigation is underway, with appropriate actions being taken to ensure that the clients of Cayman National's Isle of Man bank and trust companies are protected," the statement added. The statement doesn't name Phineas Fisher explicitly, but instead says the bank was the victim of a "criminal hacking group." "I robbed a bank and gave the money away," Phineas Fisher wrote in their most recent manifesto, adding that they breached the bank in 2016. "Computer hacking is a powerful tool to fight economic inequality." In its statement, Cayman National claimed it had found no evidence of financial loss either to its customers or Cayman National itself. Twitter account Distributed Denial of Secrets (DDoSecrets) posted a link to the copies of the servers of Cayman National Bank and Trust. "To make certain files easier to access, the two Athol servers were combined into a single archive. The raw Athol servers will be released next week, along with the launch of the Hunter Memorial Library which will make over 600,000 of the bank's emails searchable online," reads a follow-up tweet. The total size of data is about 2 terabytes.

Brazilian racing driver Christiano 'Tuka' Rocha has died as a result of injuries sustained in a plane crash in Brazil on Thursday. He was 36.

Rocha had raced in A1GP and the football-based Superleague Formula in the late 2000s.

He was aboard a plane that crashed upon landing in Barra Grande, Marau district. One person was killed at the scene and Rocha was among the nine seriously injured, suffering severe burns and pulmonary intoxication from which he succumbed on Sunday morning in hospital.

After beginning his racing career in Brazil, Rocha switched to the European scene in 2002 and was team-mate to Formula 1 refugee Ricardo Zonta at the Gabord team in Formula Renault 3.5 forerunner World Series by Nissan.

He spent much of his European stint in Italian Formula 3000, before representing Brazil alongside the likes of Bruno Junqueira, Raphael Matos and Vitor Meira in the inaugural A1GP season in 2006-07.

Rocha drove for the Astromega-run Flamengo team in Superleague Formula in the shortlived football-themed championship's first season in 2008, and took a best result of second in the reversed-grid leg of the Donington Park season-opener.

The following year he moved back to his native Brazil and contested the domestic Stock Car series between 2011 and '18, where he was a race winner at Ribeirao Preto in 2015.

A graduate of the Brazilian karting scene, Rocha was one of the founders of Speedland, one of Brazil's biggest karting franchises, and ran the Tuka Racing School in Sao Paulo.

Russia flags possible 2019 summit on E. Ukraine

MOSCOW (Reuters) — A summit between France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine to try to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine is possible this year, but no date has been agreed, a Kremlin aide said Sunday.

France said Friday that the so-called Normandy summit will take place in Paris on Dec. 9, but Moscow has not confirmed either the plans or the date.

“I think there will be a chance to organize [the summit] this year. I can’t say the exact date, because it is still under discussion, but, obviously, this year,” Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told a news show on local TV network Russia-1.

If it happens, the Normandy summit, named after a meeting in the northwestern French region of the leaders of the four countries in 2014, will take place following a breakthrough in relations between Russia and Ukraine.

Moscow and Kiev exchanged prisoners in September and this month Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed rebels began withdrawing from a village in the disputed Donbass region.

Russia began moving three captured Ukrainian Navy ships on Sunday, Reuters reported, after a Russian newspaper said Moscow would return them to Ukraine ahead of a summit.

The summit plans are not directly tied to legislation giving Donbass a special status, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during the same Sunday news show, Interfax reported.

The Gang of Eight is a colloquial term for a set of eight leaders within the United States Congress who are briefed on classified intelligence matters by the executive branch.
