On Thursday the Department of Justice announced that for the first time in nearly two decades it will resume capital punishment, with Attorney General William Barr the process for the execution of five death-row in mates is set to move forward. It will mark the first federal executions since 2003.
"Congress has expressly authorized the death penalty through legislation adopted by the people’s representatives in both houses of Congress and signed by the President," Barr said in a written statement released by the DOJ.
The first among the five new executions announced is Daniel Lewis Lee, convicted in 1999 of murdering family of three in Arkansas, including children. Notably all five death-row inmates now scheduled to face execution are child murderers.
"The Justice Department upholds the rule of law—and we owe it to the victims and their families to carry forward the sentence imposed by our justice system," Barr said further in his statement.
The DOJ release indicated the Federal Bureau of Prisons will use a single drug, pentobarbital, for all federal executions, currently used by a number of states for lethal injections.
“Under Administrations of both parties, the Department of Justice has sought the death penalty against the worst criminals, including these five murderers, each of whom was convicted by a jury of his peers after a full and fair proceeding,” Barr's statement continued.
The five inmates are scheduled for executions to take place at a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, reportedly in December and early January.
Prior to stopping federal execution cases in 2003, perhaps the more notorious criminal to be put to death was Timothy McVeigh in 2001, for killing 168 people in the Oklahoma City bombing, and further recent death row cases awaiting execution include Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in 2015 for the Boston Marathon bombing, and white supremacist Dylann Roof in 2017 for the Charleston church shooting.

Two Grundy County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Officers Charged With Federal Civil Rights Offenses
Chief Deputy Anthony “Tony” Bean, 59, and Sergeant Anthony “T.J.” Bean, 29, of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office were indicted today by a federal grand jury in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for using excessive force against arrestees, announced Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee J. Douglas Overbey, and FBI-Knoxville Special Agent in Charge Troy A. Sowers.
For an incident involving an arrestee identified by the initials F.M., the indictment charges Deputy Chief Tony Bean and Deputy T.J. Bean with one count of deprivation of rights under color of law in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 242. The indictment alleges that the defendants, while serving with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, used unreasonable force when they assaulted and injured arrestee F.M. in December 2017.
The indictment additionally charges Tony Bean with one count of deprivation of rights under color of law in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 242 for an incident involving arrestee C.G. The indictment alleges that, while serving as Chief of Police with the Tracy City Police Department, Tony Bean used unreasonable force when he assaulted and injured arrestee C.G. in August 2014.
Each of the counts charging a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 242 carries a maximum penalty of 10 years of imprisonment. An indictment is merely an accusation and each defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
This case was investigated by the Knoxville Division of the FBI, and is being prosecuted by Trial Attorneys Rebekah J. Bailey and Kathryn E. Vicky Ward, who wrote a 2003 profile about Epstein for Vanity Fair, revealed at the Daily Beast on Sunday that her profile had originally contained a highly credible allegation that Epstein had molested a 16-year-old girl, but it was cut from the published version by then-editor Graydon Carter. I began to cry. It was so wrong. The family had been so brave. I thought about the mother, her fear of the dark, of the harm she feared might come to her daughters. And then I thought of all the rich, powerful men in suits ready to talk about Epstein’s “great mind.”
In the end, she wrote, Carter said he believed Epstein over the mother and two daughters who had made the claim. Vanity Fair, in a statement to the Daily Beast, explained that “Epstein denied the charges at the time and since the claims were unsubstantiated and no criminal investigation had been initiated, we decided not to include them.”
Ward insisted that she does not blame Carter for making what he thought was the right call at the time, but that “it has often struck me that if my piece had named the women, the FBI might have come after Epstein sooner and perhaps some of his victims, now, in the latest spate of allegations, allegedly either paid off or too fearful of retribution to speak up, would have been saved.”

If elected president, Gillibrand said she would sign an executive order to end all new fossil fuel leases on public lands and the outer continental shelf. She'd also ban hydraulic fracturing on public lands, and support restricting fracking near schools and residential areas.
The Climate Change Moonshot would also implement a $52 per metric ton of carbon tax "to steer companies away from fossil fuels and toward investment in clean and renewable energy," Gillibrand said. This part of the plan includes ending federal subsidies for the industry.
"American taxpayers shouldn't be subsidizing an industry built on greed that's destroying communities' health and the planet," she added.
