Son Of Jamal Khashoggi Leaves Saudi Arabia Despite Travel Ban

The son of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia on Thursday, according to CNN, after having originally been prevented from leaving the country by a travel ban. Salah bin Jamal Khashoggi, a dual US-Saudi citizen, had his passport restricted by the kingdom earlier in the year.

Salah is the eldest son of Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed by a Saudi hit squad after entering his country's consulate in Istanbul on 2 October. Earlier in the day the Saudis effectively admitted the murder was planned when in the latest twist in the narrative, they admitted the killing was a "premeditated act."

As we reported on Tuesday, Salah Khashoggi was pictured shaking hands with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, the man widely believed to have organized the killing of his father, during a visit between the Khashoggi family and the Saudi royal family, including King Salman.

According to SPA, the king and crown prince “offered their deepest condolences” to the family of the assassinated journalist, while Sahl and Salah Khashoggi “expressed their utmost thanks” to the royal family for their condolences.

However, as Middle East Eye notes, a Saudi human rights activist and close friend of the late Khashoggi, Yahya Assiri, told Middle East Eye the visit was “a serious assault on the family” of the murdered journalist, particularly as authorities continued to bar them from traveling.

"Jamal told me that his wife was forced to divorce him after she was banned indefinitely from travel,” Assiri said. He said Khashoggi had also told him that Saudi authorities barred his entire family from travel in an attempt to pressure him to return.

"In addition to admitting responsibility for the crime, Saudi authorities must immediately allow the Khashoggi family to travel, if they are genuinely keen on uncovering the truth," he said. Assiri said the visit most likely took place under pressure on the family to "cover up the crime."

Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said: "There are still questions that need answers" over the premeditated murder, demanding the Saudis explain why the 18 were arrested. "Who gave them the orders?" he asked, pointing out that Khashoggi's body had still not been found.

"Where is (the body)? You admit they did it, but why are they not saying (where)?" Cavusoglu told a press conference in Ankara with Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki. "His family also wants to know and pay their final tribute." The Turkish minister repeated Erdogan's demand that those involved in the murder should be legally tried in Turkey, adding that Ankara was willing to cooperate with everyone.

On Tuesday, CIA Director Gina Haspel visited Ankara for talks, with pro-government Turkish media claiming on Wednesday intelligence officials shared evidence with her. The officials provided Haspel with video images and audio tapes as well as evidence gathered from the consulate and the consul's residence during a briefing at the Turkish Intelligence Organisation (MIT), Sabah newspaper reported.

Asked to confirm whether this was true, Cavusoglu said he could not provide an exact answer but Turkey would "share documents and evidence in our hands with countries and institutions which wanted it".

Declassified Secret Docs Show Argentine Gov't Worked With Nazis – Researchers

In the years following the end of the Second World War, Argentina became home to many fleeing Nazis, who, as research shows, obtained visas to the country with greater ease than Jewish applicants.

The Delegation of Argentine Jewish Associations (DAIA) has started examining the Argentine government's archives, which were sent to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in September 2018 by the country's president, Mauricio Macri. Among them were previously classified documents from the Argentine Foreign Ministry.

DAIA President Alberto Indij said in an interview with Sputnik Mundo that the documents, which cover the period between 1936 and 1947, contain significant evidence that several Argentine governments had cooperated with Nazi Germany. According to him, the documents reveal that the government had taken measures aimed at both preventing Jewish immigration and at helping top Nazi officers escape to Argentina.

Indij explicitly mentions top secret directive number 11, issued on 12 July, 1938 by the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The directive prescribed preventing "unwanted individuals," mostly of Jewish origin, from entering the country, while Nazis had "no trouble" entering.

The head of DAIA's Center for Social Studies, Marisa Braylan, noted in an interview with Sputnik Mundo that many historical records prove that many Nazi officers fled to Argentina after Germany lost the war. She added that the amount of documents that DAIA will have to study is vast and will take time to sort out, but promised that the first results will be published by the end of the year.

Following the defeat of Nazi Germany in the Second World War, many of its officers and prominent figures fled to Latin America. Several of them fled from justice to Argentina, such as the engineer of the death camp system, Adolph Eichmann, Doctor Josef Mengele, who conducted experiments on the camps' prisoners, and Gerhard Bohne, who oversaw the Aktion T-4 euthanasia program, which systematically exterminated people with mental and physical disabilities.

UK Struggles with 700 Live Terror Investigations, ‘We Are Not Matched to Threat Level’

Police counter-terror chief Neil Basu has revealed the British authorities are struggling with a record 700 live terrorism investigations — and they are “not matched” to the threat.

“My predecessor Mark [Rowley] when he was in front of you a year ago said ‘despite our best endeavours we’re not yet as well matched to the threat as we were a year ago’,” Basu told the Home Affairs Select Committee in Parliament.

“So one year on I’d like to tell you we are matched to the current threat, but the reality is we are not,” he admitted.

The senior Metropolitan Police officer claimed 13 radical Islamic terrorist plots had been thwarted since Khalid Masood’s attack outside Parliament in 2017, expressing concern that his simple vehicle-and-knives based tactics had “lowered the bar” for jihadists, in terms demonstrating how a very simple plan could be executed effectively.

“It generated in the minds of some extremists an intention that brought their capability forward,” Basu explained.

“The greatest concern to me comes from simple attacks on softer targets that are cheap to mount, easy to disguise and therefore harder to see and stop.”

In reference to the spate of terror attacks Britain suffered in 2017, including the Westminster attack, the Manchester Arena bombing, and the London Bridge and Borough Market van and knives attack, Basu warned: “Those attacks were not a temporary escalation in that threat. They were a sustained shift in that threat and the UK [counter-terrorism] machine to this day continues to run red hot.”

He added: “The attacks demonstrated both the breadth of targets and methodologies employed have increased. The weapons used by attackers now range from homemade explosives to a family car or an everyday kitchen knife.”

The Met leader was at pains to also stress “disturbingly rising extreme right-wing activity” and “hostile state activity” — but had to concede that some 80 percent of the counter-terror workload was Islam-related.

“The overriding threat to the UK remains from those inspired by [Islamic State] and the resurgent al-Qaeda,” he said.

lightning strike reportedly ignited a massive inferno Tuesday night at the 150-year-old First Baptist Church in Wakefield, Massachusetts, destroying almost everything inside – but amid the rubble, crews miraculously found one painting survived the hellish flames.

A painting depicting Jesus Christ – standing in a white robe with hands, bearing the marks of crucifixion, extended – survived nearly untouched with only a few drops of water on it. The painting hung just inside the church’s front doors.

In a statement, church officials expressed their gratitude no parishioners were hurt and thanked the fire department for battling the seven-alarm blaze.

“We know that we serve a God who specializes in restoring brokenness and who can bring beauty even from ashes,” they wrote. “So we move into the future with trust, hope, and gratitude.”

A GoFundMe page was created to help the church.

Interim pastor Norm Bendroth told Boston 25 that he was settling down to watch the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series on Tuesday night when he saw “a fireball in the sky.”

“It just went up like a tinderbox. It’s a building built in 1870 and it’s a balloon-style so one the fire starts you know the whole building just went up quickly,” he said.

According to the National Register of Historic Places, the Italianate structure was constructed around 1872 and rebuilt in 1912 after a fire.

The estimated damage was more than $1 million, with the town’s fire chief, Michael Sullivan, telling the Boston Globe the “extent of the fire on arrival was just too great for us to stop it.”
