Taking a different angle on the photo, track the history of the photograph:

Who took it? Where was it taken? When was it taken? To whom was it provided for publication? Was it otherwise archived (digitially)?

Columbia College Today, January/ February 2009, Alumni Corner, "Barack Obama ’83, My Columbia College Roommate". Photo caption: Obama and Boerner snapped photos of each other when they were roommates on West 109th Street. Inset: Boerner today. From body of the article:

I was Barack Obama ’83’s roommate at Columbia College in fall 1981. I met him in 1979, when we were freshmen at Occidental College (Oxy) in Los Angeles and our dorm rooms were directly opposite each other. […]

The crowd we hung out with included men, women, blacks, whites, Hispanics and international students. […]

We both transferred from Oxy to Columbia in fall 1981. Barack had found an apartment on West 109th Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus, and suggested that I room with him. Our sublet was a third-story walk-up in a so-so neighborhood; the unit next door was burned out and vacant. […]

After that first semester, we had to move. […]

Since I last saw him in 1985, we have exchanged a few letters and photos. […]

A) Track history of the photo, is what I took Q to have meant. But, yes, B) track history of items in the photo, too, as per your post. And, yes, also C) track history of the other person in the photo – D) and of relationship (whatever form it took) with Hussein.

Room mate took the photo inside the shared apartment. The other person in the photo was not Hussein's room mate at that time (if he ever was).

https://www.college.columbia.edu/cct/archive/jan_feb09/alumni_corner

https://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/20/recollections-of-obamas-ex-roommate/

A1) When was photo taken? Fall of 1981, first trimester.

A2) Where was photo taken? Inside living room in apartment on 3E at 142 West 109th Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus, New York City. To sit in the living room, they first would have passed through kitchen, Hussein's room, and room mate's room.

A3) Who took the photo? Phil Boerner, room mate at that time in that residence. Today he is communications and public relations manager at the California Veterinary Medical Association. He is a registered Democrat.

A4) Photos of Phil Boerner is at the links. One was taken by Hussein in 81. The other was taken much more recently (before publication date of Jan/Feb volume of Columbia College Today and before publication date on NY Times article - Jan 20, 2009.

A5) Photo supplied for publication by Phil Boerner.

B1) See your comments and graphic.

On item B, the apartment was described in the article at the link. Snippet:

"We both transferred from Oxy to Columbia in fall 1981. Barack had found an apartment on West 109th Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus, and suggested that I room with him. Our sublet was a third-story walk-up in a so-so neighborhood; the unit next door was burned out and vacant. The doorbell didn’t work; to be let in when I first arrived I had to yell up to Barack from the street. It was a railroad apartment: From the kitchen, you walked into Barack’s room, then my room, and lastly the living room. We didn’t have a television or computers. In that apartment we hosted a number of visitors, mostly friends from Oxy who stayed overnight when they were passing through town."

C1) The two roomies hosted visitors, mostly friends from Occidental College (Los Angeles) who stayed overnight when they were passing through town. Was the other person in the photo one such visitor? Appears he was not a room mate at that time in that residence.

C2) The other person seated on the sofa was a friend, Sohale Siddiqi. Source: Phil Boerner.

C3) Possibly a Pakistani friend who taught Hussein to cook chicken curry.

Sidenote: Hussein wrote an article for Sundial, in 1983:

Tracking C & D:

Regarding the identity of the other person on the sofa photo:

http://archives.starbulletin.com/2008/05/17/news/story05.html

C4) Siddiqi is from Karachi, Pakistan.

C5) Siddiqi visited Los Angeles during the time Hussein was at Occidental.

C6) Years after his time with Hussein, Siddiqi says, he became addicted to cocaine and lost his business.

D1) During his freshman year at Occidental, Hussein became friends with Mohammed Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, two wealthy Pakistanis. Siddiqui was their friend; they introduced him to Hussein.

D2) Hussein's traveled to Pakistan in the summer of 1981. That was before Hussein roomed with Phil Boerner in the Fall of 1981; and before the sofa photo with Siddiqi.

D3) In about 1982, Siddiqi and Obama got an apartment at a sixth-floor walk-up on East 94th Street. Siddiqi managed to get the apartment thanks to subterfuge.

D4) Looking back, Siddiqi acknowledges that he and Obama were an odd couple."

D5) Siddiqi said his female friends thought Obama was "a hunk."

D6) "We were always competing," he said. "You know how it is. You go to a bar and you try hitting on the girls. He had a lot more success."

D7) Their relationship started to fray. "I was partying all the time. I was disrupting his studies," Siddiqi said. Obama moved out."

D8) Siddiqi has not kept in touch.

D9) Hussein gave Siddiqi a job reference.

D10) Siddiqi's telephone answering message (2008):

"My name is Hal Siddiqi, and I approve of this message. Vote for peace, vote for hope, vote for change and vote for Obama."

The article mentions other friends from Pakistan and from India (and elsewhere).

Origin? > Siddiqi was from Karachi, the first capital city of Pakistan.

Hundreds of thousands of Muslims have resettled in Karachi from India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, Kyrghyzstan, China. Likewise, Hindus migrated to India. Huge changes in demography of Karachi. Population now 15 million. About 96% Muslim (Sunni and Shiite), up from about 50% in the 1950s.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karachi

Sohale is a Koranic name.

But is Q asking about the origin of the relationship? The working relationship with the Hussein Administration?

No facial hair could refer to the gay slang meaning of 'a beard'. Is Q asking about the woman (no facial hair) who is the beard of a gay man?

Hussein's first college girlfriend, Alex McNear.

His second girlfriend, Genevieve Cook, whom he began dating after meeting at a Lower East Side party six months after graduation.

Prior to his meeting and subsequently marrying Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, Hussein wore a ring on his left ring finger – the ring looks like a wedding band in the various photos from that time.

I can’t get one interesting line from the book out of my head: “B. That’s for you. F’s for all the f—ing that we do”. That’s a line from a poem written by a then 25-year-old Australian American woman named Genevieve Cook, who slept with Obama, who was 22 then, on their first date in Manhattan.

Wasn't Hussein's father the subject of an FBI investigation or inquiry? An open file on him during the 1980s?

I'm thinking of the notion of projection that Q has recently brought up.
