They have the points cut off at the top and a tube sewn for a drawstring, and the parts that can't be seen are also likely tailored (cut and sewn) so that they fit more closely against the body. I was a stitcher for a living. Not square.

OMG, for heaven's sakes, these are bandana halter tops. Quite in style in the 70s, and we all know fashions go in and out of style. And when you have a group get-together of young girls, especially tweens, it's not uncommon to go all matchy-matchy. These girls might even have made them themselves, they are quite easy to make and plenty modest for modern girls that haven't developed yet.

The bandana halter top isn't anything freaky. Chances are the colors mean nothing. Other than the girls picking tehir favorite color. Although, there's always the possibility that they're like the colored wrist bands that girls wear in school indicating "what they'll do". I'm not defining DO.
