Haven't read, but seems to be about two denomiations at odds. (cults?)
The writing is phenomenal - it's in old style Scottish, but this descriptions sounds to me like a kind of festival time. No doubt rife with double meanings.
"Twice a year the Auld Lichts went demented. The occasion was the fast-day at Tilliedrum; when its inhabitants, instead of crowding reverently to the kirk, swooped profanely down in their scores and tens of scores on our God-fearing town, intent on making a day of it. Then did the weavers rise as one man, and go forth to show the ribald crew the errors of their way. All denominations were represented, but Auld Lichts led. An Auld Licht would have taken no man's blood without the conviction that he would be the better morally for the bleeding; and if Tammas Lunan's case gave an impetus to the blows, it can only have been because it opened wider Auld Licht eyes to Tilliedrum's desperate condition. Mr. Dishart's predecessor more than once remarked that at the Creation the devil put forward a claim for Thrums, but said he would take his chance of Tilliedrum; and the statement was generally understood to be made on the authority of the original Hebrew."

This fascinating and disturbing book unravels the subtle and deadly mixture of manipulation, fantasy and control with which J. M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, entangled a number of child victims. The most famous examples are the orphaned Llewellyn-Davies boys, but their tomboy cousin, Daphne du Maurier, was also profoundly affected by Barrie’s games.
Dudgeon begins with the children’s grandfather, George du Maurier, author of Trilby, which features the hypnotist, Svengali, and Peter Ibbetson, which centres on ‘dreaming true’, that is, being able to communicate even when apart. Both became best-sellers and influenced the 1890s generation. He demonstrates how George du Maurier’s interest in hypnosis and dreaming true fed into Barrie’s psychological need to have emotional control over those he loved.
Dudgeon is good at asking the right questions, particularly about Barrie’s own tragic and dysfunctional childhood. This, together with his long view covering several generations, allows him to disentangle the threads and examine not only how Barrie was able to take over the Llewelyn-Davies boys so completely, but also how they, and Daphne du Maurier, ended up deeply disturbed and, in some cases, destroyed, by him. "Are all the children chained, so that they cannot fly away?…" See in text (Chapter 14 - The Pirate Ship)
This metaphor shows how Hook wants the children to lose their imaginations before they die. Recall earlier when Peter teaches the Darling children to fly, telling them to fly they just need to believe. Keeping them in chains and preventing them from flying is symbolic of ruining their ability to believe.
I hope Wendy is safe. Anyone find her yet? That go fund me is pretty sad if it's her. Can't find her birthdate.
But I find it interesting her father, born into Hollyweird, moves from Malibu to DC (beach to swamp) to clean up a river in 1992. Still living there?
