November 15, 1777: The Continental Congress ratified of the Articles of Confederation. This document served as the first governing framework for the United States of America, uniting the thirteen original states under a shared governmental structure.

The Articles established a confederation, a union of independent states, where each state retained its sovereignty, freedom, and independence. The Articles were replaced by the current U.S. Constitution 12 years later.

Biden admin justifies Israel’s assault on Gaza hospitals with recycled Israeli ‘intelligence’

As Israel assaults Gaza’s Shifa Hospital, the Biden administration claims that “Hamas does use hospitals” as military bases. Once again, Washington appears to be relying on dubious Israeli propaganda rather than independent analysis.

With Israeli troops storming Gaza’s Al-Shifa and Al-Rantisi hospitals, the United States and Israel are doubling down on discredited claims that Hamas has been maintaining “command centers” out of the basements of hospitals in Gaza, even after so-called evidence produced by Tel Aviv was thoroughly debunked.

“I can confirm for you that we have information that Hamas, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, used some hospitals in the Gaza Strip, including Al-Shifa, and tunnels underneath them, to conceal and to support their military operations and to hold hostages,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters Tuesday.

Kirby’s claim echoed the assertion by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, who maintained that “open-source reporting” shows “Hamas does use hospitals, along with a lot of other civilian facilities, for command-and-control, for storing weapons, for housing its fighters.”

On November 14, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters that US intelligence had no “boots on the ground,” nor any intelligence assets capable of independently gathering intelligence from or about Shifa. When asked if the declassified intel briefing spun out by Kirby and Sullivan arrived through Washington’s “Israeli counterparts,” she refused to answer. But she strongly suggested the intelligence dump was politically motivated.

“This is newly-downgraded information that we felt was important to get out today, because there have been a lot of questions about the hospital and how Hamas operates, and so it was important to get out there,” Singh insisted.

Hamas denies using hospitals for military purposes, and both local healthcare workers and international humanitarian organizations back that up. “I’m sick and tired of these [Israeli] claims that there are Hamas command centers [in hospitals],” Norwegian physician Dr. Mads Gilbert told Al-Jazeera on November 12. Having performed life-saving procedures for several weeks inside Shifa during Israel’s 2014 assault on Gaza, Gilbert noted, “As I’ve said 100 times… we’ve never seen high-ranking Hamas people in Al-Shifa,” adding “we’ve been able to roam freely.”

But that did little to prevent Israeli troops from waging an all-out assault on the facilities. As Israeli forces surrounded Shifa hospital on Tuesday with the full-throated support of the Biden administration, arresting journalists outside the facility and violently clearing displaced people from its grounds, doctors inside were forced to move babies in intensive care from one wing of the hospital to another to save their lives. A lack of fuel had already forced many of those infants off vital oxygen supply units.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have been unable to find any presence of hostages inside or around the hospital. As Israeli Army Radio reported on November 15, “There is no indication of the presence of abductees inside the hospital.”

How does the test work?

A PCR test amplifies DNA sequences. It involves DNA primers, DNA bases, enzymes, a buffer solution, and thermal cycling to help replicate these sequences.

The first step is to collect a sample from the person undergoing the test.We describe the acceptable types of sample below.

Next, a laboratory researcher uses a specialized machine to heat the sample. This separates the DNA inside into two pieces of single-stranded DNA. The reaction then cools to allow primers to attach to the template DNA sequences. It then heats up again to allow an enzyme known called Taq polymerase to add DNA bases to the templates. This process duplicates the original DNA sample, creating two strands.

The machine can automate this entire process and repeat it as many times as necessary to create many exact copies of the original DNA segment.

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test detects genetic material from a pathogen or abnormal cell sample. Ways of collecting samples include a nasal swab, a saliva swab, or taking a sample of blood.

Abstract

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has become a standard and important molecular biological technique with numerous applications in genetic analysis, forensics and in vitro diagnostics. Since its invention in the 1980s, there has been dramatic performance improvement arising from long-lasting efforts to optimize amplification conditions in both academic studies and commercial applications. More recently, a range of nanometer-sized materials including metal nanoparticles, semiconductor quantum dots, carbon nanomaterials and polymer nanoparticles, have shown unique effects in tuning amplification processes of PCR. It is proposed that these artificial nanomaterials mimic protein components in the natural DNA replication machinery in vivo. These so-called nanomaterials-assisted PCR (nanoPCR) strategies shed new light on powerful PCR with unprecedented sensitivity, selectivity and extension rate. In this review, we aim to summarize recent progress in this direction and discuss possible mechanisms for such performance improvement and potential applications in genetic analysis (particularly gene typing and haplotyping) and diagnostics.

GRAPHENE OXIDE NANOPARTICLES HAVE BEEN FOUND BY ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AND SPECTROSCOPY, AMONG OTHER TECHNIQUES IN THE COVID PCR AND ANTIGEN TESTING SWABS, MASKS, AND INJECTIONS.

The flu vaccine contained graphene oxide nanoparticles and the new flu vaccines and the new intranasal COVID vaccines they are preparing also contain huge doses of graphene oxide nanoparticles.

On This Day in history, November 15, 1777, the Articles of Confederation are approved by the Continental Congress for distribution to the states. All 13 states would have to ratify the Articles in order for them to become the first governing document of the new United States of America.

A Confederation of states was first called for in Congress on June 7, 1776 by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia when he submitted what became known as the "Lee Resolution." The Resolution called for three things, 1) a declaration of independence from Great Britain, 2) that foreign alliances should be sought and 3) that a plan of confederation between the colonies should be prepared.

On June 12, 1776, one day after appointing a committee to prepare a declaration of independence from Great Britain, Congress also created a committee to prepare a plan of confederation between the states. The committee, chaired by John Dickinson of Pennsylvania, submitted its plan to Congress one month later. Congress then began a long and tedious process of debating the final form of the Confederation that lasted an entire year. The final form of the Articles was determined during the summer of 1777 and the final document was approved on November 15 for distribution to the states. Three and half years later, the final state approved the Articles and it became law on March 1, 1781.

The Articles of Confederation created a weak central government due to fears of creating another too-powerful government like the one they had just overthrown. They are the source of the name "the United States of America." The Articles created a single body where each state had one vote. Changes to the Articles had to be agreed upon unanimously in order to become law. Congress had power to declare war, establish foreign treaties, settle disputes between the states and to settle maritime disputes.

The Articles did not, however, give Congress authority to tax, to control commerce between the states or even to compel its own members to attend sessions. These weaknesses made it virtually impossible for the new federal government to function and before long, calls were made for a new convention to create a new Constitution. The Articles lasted until March 4, 1789 when it was replaced with the United States Constitution.

Danon and Ben-Barak who led the Mossad from 2009 to 2011 cite various historical examples of Western European countries and the United States opening the door to refugees displaced by war, and then declare that "organizations with experience settling refugees should facilitate the relocation of Gaza residents who wish to move to countries willing to accept them...Even if countries took in as few as 10,000 people each, it would help alleviate the crisis."

Scooping up Palestinian refugees from Gaza would also advance a goal of many Israelis - to ethnically cleanse the territory and allow Israel to readmit settlers, after having removed them in 2005. Such a cleansing goal isn't a conspiracy theory from the fringes of the internet: Last month, a leaked document drafted by Israel's intelligence ministry proposed forcing the population of Gaza into Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

Today, America First Legal (AFL) filed a brief defending Donald J. Trump’s First Amendment rights at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. This case arises from an unprecedented gag order issued by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s politically-motivated prosecution of Former President Trump in Washington, D.C.

The gag order prevents the President from making public statements that target the Special Counsel or his staff, public statements that target any reasonably foreseeable witnesses or the substance of their testimony, and directing others to make any public statements about either of those two categories.

This absurd gag order is just another example of the Biden administration unjustly using its power to silence its political opponents and to attempt to prevent President Trump from speaking. AFL’s brief highlights two critical issues for the court:

The gag order empowers a single district court judge to supervise the speech of a leading candidate for the Presidency.

The gag order violates the separation of powers because it deprives the former President of the ability to engage in political speech and political association, which interferes with Executive Branch accountability in its discretionary functions.

As AFL’s brief highlights, the Biden Administration has authorized the appointment of, and an indictment by, a Special Counsel. That indictment charges President Biden’s principal political rival and likely general-election opponent, Donald J. Trump, with multiple federal crimes. The gag order sharply curtails President Trump’s ability to engage in core political speech and political association, thereby limiting his ability to keep both the Special Counsel and the President “accountable . . . to his country in his political character.”

That political accountability—like the First Amendment’s protections—“has its fullest and most urgent application . . . during a campaign for political office.” Citizens United v. FEC, 558 U.S. 310, 339 (2010). And the gag order prevents President Trump from engaging in that core political speech despite his campaign for political office.

Global Decline In Male Fertility Linked To Pesticides, Study Says

A new study shows that male fertility is declining due to the use of pesticides.

According to 25 studies done by researchers over several years, the results revealed that men who have been exposed to certain pesticides had a massive decline in sperm concentrations.

The study published by Environmental Health Perspectives, included over 1,700 men that dated back several decades.

“No matter how we looked at the analysis and results, we saw a persistent association between increasing levels of insecticide and decreases in sperm concentration,” said study author Melissa Perry, who is an environmental epidemiologist and the dean of the College of Public Health at George Mason University. “I would hope this study would get the attention of regulators seeking to make decisions to keep the public safe from inadvertent, unplanned impacts of insecticides.”

A report published last year by the Human Reproduction Update showed sperm counts were falling at a staggering rate across the world.

“There’s been some pretty, I’d say, convincing and sort of scary data on measures of male fertility over the previous 50-70 years, whatever it might be, from different places around the world suggesting sperm concentration is on decline and not just a little bit,” said John Meeker, a professor of environmental health sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health who was not involved in either of the recent studies. “It’s concerning.”

Researchers in the latest study focused on two groups of chemicals, organophosphates and some carbamates, which are used in insecticides. They also used separate groups of people with exposures to pesticides and others who were not in the study.

Additionally, the researchers controlled for outside factors such as smoking and age. However, Perry says more research and study is required to determine how pesticides are affecting sperm concentrations ultimately.

“The more you study something, the more complicated it seems to get, especially when it comes to biology and the human body,” Meeker said. “We’re slowly pointing out various chemicals or classes of chemicals we think could be harmful to something like reproductive health, but as far as a single smoking gun, I haven’t seen anything to that extent.”

Additionally, Perry says there are other data points to consider such as how sperm are shaped and how they swim.

Japan's exports grew 1.6% in October from a year ago, marking the second straight month of increase according to preliminary data released Thursday by the Finance Ministry.

The figures revealed that Japan's exports were at 9.14 trillion yen ($60 billion), while imports were 9.8 trillion yen, resulting in a trade deficit of 662 billion yen.

Exports of automobiles increased due partly to the weak yen, while those of chipmaking equipment decreased. By destination, shipments to the U.S. and the European Union grew 8.4% and 8.9%, respectively. Those for China dropped 4.0%.

The October trade data follows Wednesday's release of preliminary gross domestic product figures for the July-September quarter, which showed sluggish domestic demand, including household consumption and corporate investment. External demand, therefore, is becoming increasingly critical for the world's third-largest economy.

The Chinese government has built up the world’s largest known online disinformation operation and is using it to harass US residents, politicians, and businesses—at times threatening its targets with violence, a CNN review of court documents and public disclosures by social media companies has found.

The onslaught of attacks – often of a vile and deeply personal nature – is part of a well-organized, increasingly brazen Chinese government intimidation campaign targeting people in the United States, documents show.

The US State Department says the tactics are part of a broader multi-billion-dollar effort to shape the world’s information environment and silence critics of Beijing that has expanded under President Xi Jinping. On Wednesday, President Biden is due to meet Xi at a summit in San Francisco.

Victims face a barrage of tens of thousands of social media posts that call them traitors, dogs, and racist and homophobic slurs. They say it’s all part of an effort to drive them into a state of constant fear and paranoia.

Often, these victims don’t know where to turn. Some have spoken to law enforcement, including the FBI – but little has been done. While tech and social media companies have shut down thousands of accounts targeting these victims, they’re outpaced by a slew of new accounts emerging virtually every day.

Known as “Spamouflage” or “Dragonbridge,” the network’s hundreds of thousands of accounts spread across every major social media platform have not only harassed Americans who have criticized the Chinese Communist Party, but have also sought to discredit US politicians, disparage American companies at odds with China’s interests and hijack online conversations around the globe that could portray the CCP in a negative light.

Private researchers have tracked the network since its discovery more than four years ago, but only in recent months have federal prosecutors and Facebook’s parent company Meta publicly concluded that the operation has ties to Chinese police.

Meta announced in August it had taken down a cluster of nearly 8,000 accounts attributed to this group in the second quarter of 2023 alone. Google, which owns YouTube, told CNN it had shut down more than 100,000 associated accounts in recent years, while X, formerly known as Twitter, has blocked hundreds of thousands of China “state-backed” or “state-linked” accounts, according to company blogs.

Joe Biden hailed Wednesday’s talks with Xi Jinping as among the “most productive” in years

Washington and Beijing will restore communication channels between their respective militaries, US President Joe Biden told reporters following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the San Francisco Bay area on Wednesday.

“We’re back to direct, open, clear, direct communications,” Biden said, adding that the contacts would help avoid accidents and misunderstandings during a period of tense relations between the two nuclear-armed states.

“Vital miscalculations on either side can cause real, real trouble with a country like China or any other major country.”

Biden added that the talks with Xi were “some of the most constructive and productive discussions we've had,” while noting that the sides still have disagreements.

According to China’s state-run Global Times newspaper, the contacts “based on equality and respect” will include working meetings between defense departments and a bilateral “maritime security consultation mechanism.”

The unclassified glossary cites the work of controversial left-leaning academics

The US National Security Agency (NSA) compiled a list of hundreds of “social justice”terms for employees, including references to “white privilege” and “Critical Race Theory,”according to the Daily Wire, which obtained a leaked copy of the document.

The 34-page dictionary was created by the spy organization last yearbut only revealed on Wednesday. In an introductory passage, the NSA describes the document as a “starting point for engaging in open and honest conversation” and a “tool meant to build a shared language of understanding.”

“The following is a glossary of terms and language commonly used in dialogue regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice to be used as a reference,” it says.

The dictionary contains a long list of terms related to racism, sexuality and other politically and socially charged topics, including “white supremacy,” “queer theory” and “racial equity.”The Daily Wire accused the NSA of endorsing “blatantly left-wing views on race and sex,”noting that the glossary favorably cites the work of controversial academics popular on the political left.

Those thinkersinclude critical race theorist and Boston University professor Ibram X. Kendi, as well as Robin DiAngelo, corporate diversity trainer and author of ‘White Fragility.’Quoting DiAngelo directly, the NSA document defines the latter term as “the state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves [in white people].”

Republican Congressman Mike Waltz, who serves on the House Intelligence Committee, said he confirmed the authenticity of the diversity dictionary, and later urged the NSA to “get back to preventing terrorist attacks and countering China.”

“I just can’t overemphasize how shocking this is,” Waltz told the Daily Wire. “This isn’t some kind of diversity document… in, say, the Small Business Administration. This isthe NSA, the National Security Agency, one of the most powerful agencies in the world.”

The NSA came under fire in 2013 after whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked a massive trove of files detailing the agency’s illicit surveillance of American citizens. The revelations were a bombshell at the time, as then-NSA Director James Clapper had falsely insisted to lawmakers that his agency was not “wittingly” collecting “any type of data at all on millions of Americans.”

Snowden has been charged under the World War I-era Espionage Act, but has remained in Russia after his passport was revoked by US authorities, where he was granted asylum and later Russian citizenship.

It’s interesting timing that the Pope signed a document reaffirming that Catholics are forbidden from becoming Freemasons considering that this was written in response to a bishop from the Philippines who had expressed concern at the growing number of Catholics in his diocese who are taking part in Freemasonry.

It doesn't look like a meteor caused a bright flash of light and loud boom in northern Minnesota earlier this week.

After consulting experts at NASA, officials in Beltrami County say its unlikely a meteor caused the burst of light and explosion sound on Monday night. Christopher Muller, emergency management director with the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, says the incident wasn't picked up on weather radar. He also said people reported seeing the flash over an area of around 50 miles and reported hearing the blast from an even farther distance away.

“This has certainly been an interesting puzzle to try and solve, and we still don’t know exactly what it was. “ said Muller. “We appreciate the assistance we’ve received from federal agencies and science community in ruling out what it wasn’t and will continue to provide any subsequent information that is learned.” He continued, “The fact this was seen and heard across such a large area is what is a mystery. What was it?”

At this time, there have not been any reports of ground damage. The Sheriff's Office says there will be no further updates unless any significant developments in the investigation are made, or if the cause of the light and boom is determined.

Oil futures declined on Thursday, with worries about energy demand and a sharp rise in U.S. crude inventories over the past two weeks prompting prices to trade at their lowest levels since July. Price action

* West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery fell $2.69, or 3.5%, to $73.97 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

* January Brent crude the global benchmark, was down $2.32, or 2.9%, at $78.86 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe. Based on the front-month contracts, Brent and WTI crude were both poised for the lowest settlements since July.

* Gasoline lost 3.4% to $2.1268 a gallon, while December heating oil shed 3% to $2.7818 a gallon.

* Natural gas for December delivery traded at $3.087 per million British thermal units, down 3.2%.

WTI crude prices on Thursday started to “really slide about the time that the poor U.S. industrial-production report came out — a sign of a potentially softening economy that could impact energy demand,” he said.

Industrial production fell 0.6% in October, the Federal Reserve reported Thursday. Economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal expected a decline of 0.4%.

The National Association of Home Builders monthly confidence index, also released Thursday, showed a decline of 6 points to 34 in November. Cieszynski referred to the reading as “terrible” and said it “adds to the case of softening economy.”

Meanwhile, the Energy Information Administration on Wednesday released two weeks of U.S. petroleum-supply data, after having delayed last week’s numbers due to planned system updates. The government agency reported that U.S. commercial crude inventories rose by 3.6 million barrels for the week ending Nov. 10 to total 439.4 million barrels. The data showed inventories rose 13.9 million barrels in the week ending Nov. 3, for a two-week rise of 17.5 million barrels.

At 439.4 million barrels, crude stocks are below the five-year average but are trending back toward more typical levels for this time of year, ING commodity analysts Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey noted.

In terms of oil demand, “it also appears that seasonal factors may be playing a role,” SIA Wealth’s Cieszynski said. “Crude oil has dropped off along with gasoline following the end of summer driving and air-travel season, while natural gas has been stable lately,” relatively outperforming oil with the winter home-heating season approaching, he said.

A team of researchers at Kyoto University has been hard at work on a satellite made of wood — and they say it's now scheduled to launch into space next summer in a joint mission between Japan's JAXS space agency and NASA.

While it may sound like an odd choice of materials, they say wood is a surprisingly suitable material for space.

"When you use wood on Earth, you have the problems of burning, rotting, and deformation, but in space, you don’t have those problems: there is no oxygen in space, so it doesn’t burn, and no living creatures live in them, so they don’t rot," Koji Murata, a Kyoto University researcher who's been working on the project, told CNN.

It's also roughly as strong per weight as aluminum, according to Murata, and can readily burn up in the atmosphere once decommissioned.

In short, it's an exciting vision of a sustainable future that could meaningfully address our growing space debris problem — while also potentially allowing space companies to save some cash.

Murata and his team's satellite, dubbed LignoSat, is constructed out of magnolia wood and set to be launched into space as part of JAXA's J-Cube Program, a microsatellite initiative promoting up-and-coming space technologies.

The goal is to monitor the tiny satellite over at least six months to see how it responds to the extreme changes in temperatures.

"There is not much reduction in strength from minus 150 to 150 degrees Celsius (-238 to 302 degrees Fahrenheit), we confirmed that in our experiments," Murata told CNN. "But a satellite goes round the Earth and has these huge temperature differences in 90 minutes."

"We don’t know to what extent the satellite can withstand this intense, repeated cycle of temperature difference, so this has to be investigated," he added.

In addition to being more "environmentally friendly," the researchers have speculated that wood could be a compelling choice for spacecraft interiors to protect astronauts from harmful radiation.

And that's not to mention the cozy feel of having a claustrophobic space capsule clad in wood.
