I feel like going back to reading pre-S3 finale FimFiction stories. The pony fandom felt a lot more fun before that point, and so did the stories. Stuff like Mort's Day Off come to mind.

There was one where Twilight turns out to be a golemn constructed to release Luna from imprisonment, and when she puts it all together she goes postal and alicornifies herself long enough to kill Celestia.
There was another one … one of the stories was about Cutie Mark Dissociation Disorder, and how Fluttershy's mother died because she went to the doctor. That whole series, explaining why Derpy was also known as Bright Eyes, was good but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it.
You're probably aware that FoE, if you haven't read it, was from the requested time period? So were some of the early Molestia stories.

Things were really fun back when. S1 and S2 were certainly the golden age and that feeling remained for a bit even though the later seasons weren't as good in my opinion. Remember My Little Dashie and how a ton of people were going on about how sad it was? That fic became a god damn fucking meme and received a ton of parodies. Good times.

I enjoyed This Platinum Crown as far as I read into it, honestly. Can't rightly remember how far that was, but I do remember being impressed with a magical duel that wasn't "lol imma firin mah lazor" or, even more unimaginative, magic swords.

I read the whole thing, chapters 1 to 60 about two years back.
I remember practically nothing about the story, save my growing boredom with the story in it's later stages as the OC&sub-plot collections got far too large to keep track on. I honestly don't see why long adventure fics end up this way so often. MN7 comes to mind as a long-ass fic that could keep its plot centralized well enough.

It's definitely a good fic to turn off your brain to for fun.
