If ponies changed name when their jobs changed, why didn't Twilight change name when she became a princess? Or a teacher? And what about glimglam? She went from a cult leader to a student of magic under a princess, but didn't change name.

And more pressingly, not one pony on screen has changed name outside of a single instance in a flash back to a time two decades prior. Clearly, name changes are not a particularly common thing.

Even without going into just how vague the claim that Twilights family has a theme name going, which compared to the Apples or the Pies, it really doesn't, especially considering Stellar Flare > Sunburst and Firelight > Starlight Glimmer, would seem to suggest that light related names are common for unicorns in general.

Twilight Sparkle, Twilight Velvet, Night Light, and Shining Armor definitely have a theme going. On the other hand, I do not know that we can say that light-based names are common among unicorns given that we know of so many unicorns that do not have names that have anything to do with light, like Rarity's entire family or Moon Dancer or Fancy Pants or Jet Set and Upper Crust or Snips and Snails or any number of others.

Another thing is that the idea that ponies change their names when they marry (Shouldn't he be "Prince Consort Love Horse" or some sht?) was only introduced in Season Seven. I get the impression that it was yet another late addition to the lore that does not jive with what we already knew.
